HumminGuru EZ Washer Goat Hair Brushes

A manual record washer is only as good as its brushes. On the HumminGuru EZ Vinyl Record Washer, they scrub the vinyl in the bath, turn after turn, removing dust and fingerprints alike. With repeated washing, the bristles become flattened and eventually trap the dirt they should be removing. This replacement pair restores the machine to its original condition.

Goat hair, a soft fibre in contact with the grooves

HumminGuru chose goat hair for its softness. This fine, soft natural fibre slips into the grooves without scratching the surface and dislodges dust, fingerprints, greasy marks and embedded dirt. A stiffer nylon brush relies more on friction. Goat hair, by contrast, follows the contours of the record and soaks it with cleaning solution without force. The brushes do not generate static electricity during washing. This matters: a statically charged record attracts dust again as soon as it leaves the bath, undoing some of the work.

Removable brushes that adjust to the record’s thickness

Both brushes can be removed from the record washer and replaced together. They sit on a flexible mounting, using the same principle as the clamp that holds the record. This mounting adjusts to vinyl records from 1 to 3 mm thick. A thin pressing from the 1970s and a recent 180-gram record therefore pass between the bristles with the same pressure, without mechanical stress on the disc. The brushes maintain the right distance from the surface: they stay close enough to clean the bottom of the grooves, without pressing hard enough to strain the record.

Twelve turns one way, twelve the other

Washing follows a short routine. The record is locked into the clamp, whose rubber ring forms a watertight seal around the label. It is then lowered into the tank filled with 950 ml of distilled water mixed with two capfuls of EZ liquid. Hold the body of the record washer with one hand and turn the handle with the other: twelve turns clockwise, then twelve anticlockwise. Four turns of the handle make the record complete one full rotation. Each side therefore passes against the bristles three times in each direction. Reversing the direction makes the bristles work in both directions along the groove, where rotation in just one direction would leave deposits on one sidewall.

One tank of solution cleans 10 to 20 records. The bristles trap a good deal of what they remove, which is why HumminGuru recommends replacing the brushes regularly: a worn pair continues to turn in the water, but redeposits some of the dirt instead of removing it.

Frequently asked questions

Do these brushes fit another record cleaner?

No. Their shape and mounting are compatible only with the HumminGuru EZ Vinyl Record Washer. They also do not replace parts in the brand’s ultrasonic cleaners, which operate on an entirely different principle.

When should the brushes be replaced?

Flattened or misshapen bristles that no longer return to their original shape after drying are the first sign. They should also be replaced when they remain grey despite rinsing, or when records come out of the bath with marks still visible. How often depends on use: a collection picked up at a flea market, laden with old dust and grease, wears out the brushes much faster than regular cleaning of records that are already clean.

How should I care for the brushes between sessions?

After emptying the tray through its two pouring spouts, rinsing the brushes with clean water removes any remaining solution and dust. They are then left to air-dry before replacing the supplied lid, which protects the tray from dust until the next wash.

What liquid should I use with these brushes?

The official solution is EZ cleaning fluid, which is alcohol-free and sold in a 300 ml bottle. It dissolves fingerprints, sebum and greasy deposits, and reduces static electricity. Two capfuls are enough for a 950 ml tank, and one bottle covers approximately 300 to 600 records. Distilled water prevents limescale residue from being left in the grooves as they dry.

Are the brushes suitable for 45 rpm and 25 cm records?

Yes. The record cleaner accepts 17, 25 and 30 cm formats. For a 45 rpm record with a large 38 mm centre hole, the adapter supplied with the machine is placed on the base of the clamp before loading the record. The brushes then work in the same way, regardless of the diameter.

Does the EZ record cleaner replace ultrasonic cleaning?

HumminGuru presents the EZ as a pre-cleaning step before its ultrasonic cleaners. The goat-hair brushes tackle surface contaminants, such as fingerprints, grease and ingrained grime. The ultrasonics then dislodge fine particles trapped deep in the grooves. Used on its own, the EZ provides effective routine maintenance. The two devices together offer a more thorough clean.

Could the brushes get the label wet?

No. The clamp surrounds the label with a rubber ring that forms a watertight seal when closed. The brushes only work on the grooved part of the record, and the label stays dry throughout the wash. Once rinsed, the record air-dries on the supplied rack, which holds up to eight.
