Audioquest Optical to jack carbon (Optical Digital Cables (Fiber))

The Carbon optical-to-jack cable connects a source with a Toslink output to a device equipped with a 3.5 mm mini-optical socket, the small combined input found on laptops, certain converters and high-end portable players. AudioQuest offers every length in its OptiLink line with both terminations; Carbon sits at the fourth level in the range, between Cinnamon and Vodka.

Its distinguishing feature lies in the conductor itself. A standard optical cable uses a single fibre around 1 mm in diameter: light from the LED enters it at multiple angles, follows paths of unequal lengths and arrives spread out over time, which the receiver translates into clock errors (jitter). Carbon replaces it with 19 high-purity synthetic fibres with narrow aperture, polished at the ends. The trade-off is deliberate: round strands leave gaps, resulting in slightly greater attenuation per metre.

The connection remains non-metallic, with no electrical continuity between the two devices. No ground loop, no radio-frequency interference travelling back from the television to the converter. Optical S/PDIF retains its limitations (stereo PCM, compressed Dolby Digital and DTS, no HD streams), but for a soundbar, subwoofer or desktop DAC, it remains the most direct connection.
