The NuPrime IDA-8 is a compact integrated amplifier combining a ULCAM (Ultra-Linear Class A) preamplification module and a Class D power stage clocked at 600 kHz. It delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms and incorporates a digital-to-analog converter compatible with 384 kHz PCM and DSD256, as well as volume control based on a thin-film resistor ladder driven by an FPGA. Designed by Jason Lim, founder of NuPrime, this 235 × 55 × 281 mm, 4.3 kg amplifier brings together several technical features typically associated with higher-end components.
The technological heart of the IDA-8 lies in its ULCAM module, a Class A preamplification architecture built around carefully selected discrete components. This input stage uses ultra-low-noise JFET transistors to create a gain stage with remarkable linearity. Unlike traditional approaches, NuPrime developed this topology specifically to eliminate unwanted harmonic colorations while preserving the characteristic textural richness of Class A.
The power stage takes a radically different approach with a self-oscillating circuit generating pulse-width modulation. This architecture enables a switching frequency of 600 kHz, twice that of most conventional Class D amplifiers, which typically top out at 300 kHz. The high frequency pushes switching artifacts well beyond the audible spectrum, thereby preserving signal purity up to the highest musical frequencies.
The IDA-8’s linear power supply is built around a high-capacity toroidal transformer, a deliberate choice to minimize electromagnetic interference while ensuring ample instantaneous current reserves. This architecture fundamentally differs from the switching power supply used in the higher-end IDA-16, favoring a slightly warmer, more organic sonic signature.
The IDA-8’s volume control system warrants special attention. Based on a switched thin-film resistor ladder, it places only a single resistor in the signal path for each volume level. This architecture, implemented via a programmable FPGA chip, provides 99 steps adjustable in 0.5 dB increments. Each input has its own stored volume level, enabling perfect alignment between different sources without constant adjustment.
This approach eliminates traditional issues with analog potentiometers: channel imbalance at low volumes, mechanical wear, and non-linear response curves. The result is absolute transparency and full preservation of dynamics, regardless of volume position.
The IDA-8’s digital section relies on the ESS Sabre ES9010K2M chip, a 32-bit converter offering a 116 dB dynamic range. While slightly lower than the ES9018K2M DAC found in the IDA-16, it remains more than sufficient to fully exploit the potential of today’s high-resolution recordings. NuPrime has configured this DAC to automatically upsample incoming signals to 176.4 kHz, an optimal compromise between conversion quality and processing stability.
The differentiating element lies in the SRC (Sampling Rate Converter) chip co-developed by NuPrime with a specialized partner. This proprietary FPGA circuit performs sophisticated DSP: input signals are first upsampled to several megahertz before being reconverted to the target frequency. This dual conversion achieves extraordinarily low jitter and distortion levels, preserving the temporal coherence that is crucial for natural musical reproduction.
The asynchronous USB interface, based on an XMOS chip, ensures error-free transmission of PCM streams up to 384 kHz and native DSD up to 11.2 MHz (DSD256). The coaxial and optical S/PDIF inputs also accept DSD via the DoP (DSD over PCM) protocol, ensuring maximum compatibility with existing digital sources.
The IDA-8 integrates a proprietary type-A USB port ingeniously designed to accommodate NuPrime wireless receivers. This connector simultaneously carries 5V power and S/PDIF-format audio data, allowing modules like the Omnia WR-1, WR-2, BTR-HD, or Stream Mini to connect with a simple standard USB cable. This elegant solution avoids multiplying external power supplies and cables while ensuring optimal transmission quality.
The preamplified line output, usable as a subwoofer output, delivers a 2V voltage (6V on certain specific serial numbers), providing sufficient level to drive any power amplifier or active subwoofer. This output follows the main volume control, facilitating integration into 2.1 or bi-amped systems.
The anodized aluminum chassis, available in black or silver finishes, features a slightly convex front with beveled edges. Far from being purely aesthetic, this subtle curvature stiffens the structure while dispersing internal standing waves. Two combined rotary push-knobs simplify ergonomics: input selection on the left, volume and mute on the right.
NuPrime’s patented isolating feet are a rarely mentioned but crucial technical detail. These supports absorb and dissipate mechanical vibrations that could modulate the audio signal—particularly detrimental with high-frequency switching components. Their multi-material design combines elastomers and metals to create effective mechanical decoupling over a wide frequency range.
The blue LED display, perfectly legible even at a distance, simultaneously indicates the selected input and volume level. The supplied remote, minimalist in size and comparable to a credit card, offers all essential functions without superfluous features. A second, more comprehensive remote is also included for users who prefer extended controls.

Although rated at 100W into 8 ohms, the IDA-8 has substantial power reserves thanks to its total 200W power supply. Independent measurements have shown up to 180W in mono, suggesting real-world capability beyond the conservative specifications. It is still preferable to pair it with speakers of at least 4-ohm nominal impedance and sensitivity above 86 dB for optimal performance.
Since January 2021, the Bluetooth dongle is no longer included or offered as an option. Users seeking wireless connectivity can turn to the Omnia WR-1 or WR-2 modules, which provide WiFi, Bluetooth aptX HD, and access to streaming services, while connecting directly to the IDA-8’s proprietary USB port.
The IDA-8 has two USB Type-A ports with distinct functions. The rear USB Type-B port is solely for connecting a computer for high-resolution audio playback. The “Extension” USB Type-A port is a proprietary NuPrime port carrying 5V power and S/PDIF signal for compatible wireless modules. This port is not compatible with standard USB peripherals.
Native DSD playback requires installing the ASIO driver provided by NuPrime and proper configuration of your playback software. With JRiver Media Center or Foobar2000, enable ASIO mode and select “DSD Native” in the options. On Linux, only DoP mode is supported, limiting DSD playback to 2.8 MHz via the S/PDIF inputs.
NuPrime’s patented feet use a multi-layer construction combining different materials to create a mass–spring–damper system. Mechanical vibrations can modulate high-frequency circuits, creating intermodulation distortion. These feet measurably reduce such disturbances, particularly audible in transient clarity and stereo image depth.
Absolutely. The line output follows the volume control and can feed an external power amplifier. The quality of the ULCAM preamp section and the DAC fully justifies this use. Per-input stored volume even allows you to set a fixed level for certain sources, effectively turning the IDA-8 into a pure DAC for those inputs.
