The Focal 100 ICW8 is an in-ceiling speaker equipped with a 21 cm driver. Designed for discreet integration, it draws on the acoustic expertise Focal has developed since 1979. This model aims to deliver performance close to that of a floorstanding speaker, in a format tailored for built-in audio.
At the heart of the 100 ICW8 beats a 21 cm Polyglass cone, a true technological hallmark of Focal since 1988. This exclusive innovation involves applying fine hollow glass microbeads to a cellulose pulp cone. The process may seem simple, but it literally revolutionizes the acoustic properties of the transducer.
The rigidity index of the Polyglass cone surpasses that of single-skin Kevlar and is nearly ten times higher than conventional polypropylene. This exceptional rigidity is paradoxically paired with natural damping inherited from cellulose. The resulting mass-rigidity-damping ratio produces a remarkably linear frequency response curve, without the need for complex electronic corrections.
In practice, this technology translates into strikingly detailed midrange and deep, uncolored bass. The cone maintains its coherence even during the most demanding passages, whether it’s the subtleties of a string quartet or the impact of a modern movie soundtrack.
Focal invented the aluminum inverted dome tweeter in 1981, a technology that remains one of the brand’s distinctive signatures to this day. In the 100 ICW8, this 25 mm transducer benefits from decades of continuous improvement.
The inverted dome principle offers fundamental acoustic advantages. The voice coil, attached halfway up the dome, transmits movement evenly across the entire radiating surface. This configuration optimizes mechanical coupling and allows the dome to radiate directly into the air with maximum efficiency. The naturally low directivity of the inverted dome creates a stable and coherent soundstage, making the listening position much less critical than with conventional tweeters.
Aluminum provides rigidity and fast response, allowing extension up to 23 kHz. The tweeter’s 360° rotation and up to 20° tilt is a crucial technical feature. This flexibility allows you to precisely direct high-frequency dispersion toward the listening area, compensating for architectural constraints inherent to in-ceiling installation.
The new controlled directivity crossover (ODC - Optimum Directivity Crossover) represents a major breakthrough for in-ceiling speakers. This exclusive technology directly addresses the dreaded “shower effect”—that unpleasant sensation of sound falling vertically onto the listener, typical of poorly designed ceiling installations.
The ODC crossover optimizes the transition between the woofer and tweeter by taking into account the directivity characteristics of each transducer. As frequency increases, the woofer naturally becomes more directional. The crossover introduces the tweeter before this becomes problematic, ensuring even and wide sound coverage.
The three-position treble level adjustment (-3 dB, 0 dB, +3 dB) allows you to finely tailor the speaker’s response to the specific acoustics of each room. This flexibility is especially valuable in reverberant environments such as tiled kitchens or glass-walled bathrooms.
Installing the 100 ICW8 reflects careful consideration of the user experience. The three mounting tabs with optimized grip transform what was traditionally a technical chore into an intuitive process. The captive screw system eliminates the frustrating risk of losing components inside wall cavities.
Magnetic grilles, available in both round and square versions, blend seamlessly with any décor. Ready to paint, they allow for total customization and absolute discretion. The 224 mm mounting diameter remains within market standards, making it easy to replace or upgrade existing installations.
The tropicalization of the Polyglass cone is a technical asset that is often overlooked but crucial. This protection allows installation in humid environments such as bathrooms or kitchens, greatly expanding integration possibilities. This installation versatility makes the 100 ICW8 a truly universal solution for the modern home.
With a sensitivity of 90 dB for 2.83 V at 1 meter, the 100 ICW8 demonstrates remarkable efficiency. This high sensitivity allows for comfortable sound levels even with modestly powered amplifiers—a considerable advantage in multiroom setups where amplification channels are often shared.
The frequency range extends from 53 Hz to 23 kHz (± 3 dB), with a low-end roll-off at -6 dB from 40 Hz. These figures, impressive for a built-in speaker, attest to the 21 cm driver’s ability to reproduce deep, articulate bass. The nominal impedance of 8 Ω with a minimum of 6.9 Ω ensures optimal compatibility with most amplifiers on the market.
The recommended power range of 25 to 150 W offers remarkable flexibility. Whether you’re seeking a soft musical ambiance in a bedroom or cinematic dynamics in a living room, the 100 ICW8 adapts with disconcerting ease.
The 100 ICW8 fits into a comprehensive vision of home audio. Its versatility allows it to shine in three main configurations: distributed systems for hallways and living spaces, stereo setups for bedrooms and kitchens, and home theater configurations where it excels as an atmospheric effects channel.
In a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X setup, the 100 ICW8 creates a striking three-dimensional sound bubble. The adjustable tweeter allows you to optimize the localization of sound objects in space, which is crucial for modern cinematic immersion. The tonal consistency with other Focal speakers ensures harmonious integration into the most ambitious multichannel systems.
For multiroom installations, the moisture-resistant design opens up creative possibilities. Imagine perfect musical continuity from the kitchen to the bathroom, with no compromise on sound quality. The 100 ICW8 transforms every space into a potential acoustic sanctuary.
Absolutely. With bass extension down to 40 Hz (-6 dB), the 100 ICW8 delivers bass deep enough for most musical genres. For fans of electronic music or blockbusters rich in special effects, adding a subwoofer is still recommended, but for jazz, classical, or pop, the 100 ICW8 is more than sufficient in a stereo configuration.
The 360° rotating tweeter with up to 20° tilt allows you to precisely direct high frequencies toward the main listening area. This feature compensates for installation constraints where the speaker cannot be ideally positioned. In practice, this means better voice intelligibility, more precise instrument localization, and a more coherent soundstage—even when listening off-axis.
Both grilles offer identical acoustic performance thanks to their optimized design. The choice is purely aesthetic: round grilles suit contemporary interiors with soft lines, while square grilles harmonize with more geometric architectures. Both versions are magnetic and can be painted for total integration.
The tropicalization of the Polyglass cone effectively protects against the ambient humidity typical of residential bathrooms. However, the speaker should not be exposed directly to water splashes. Ceiling installation, at a reasonable distance from the shower, ensures optimal longevity while letting you enjoy exceptional sound quality during your moments of relaxation.
Start at the 0 dB position to assess the sound in your room. In highly reverberant spaces (hard surfaces, tile, glass), the -3 dB position softens the treble. For heavily damped rooms (thick carpet, heavy curtains, upholstered furniture), the +3 dB position restores lost brightness. Ultimately, your personal preference is the final judge: adjust to suit your taste.
Focal designs its ranges with remarkable tonal consistency. The 100 ICW8 integrates harmoniously with speakers from the Aria, Chora, or even higher-end series. The Polyglass technology and inverted dome tweeter, common to many Focal models, ensure optimal sonic homogeneity for seamless cinematic immersion.
For a room of this size, two 100 ICW8s in a stereo configuration, spaced 2.5 to 3 meters apart and aimed at the main listening area, create a wide and precise soundstage. In home theater, four 100 ICW8s in an Atmos configuration (two at the front, two at the rear) transform the space into a true private cinema. Adding front speakers and a subwoofer ideally completes the system.

Bon
Used in an atmos setup in a dedicated room, they are easy to install and a beautiful product. The Focal sound is unsurprisingly precise and detailed. Very good value for money.

Very easy integration, even with a "slightly rough" cutout.
I haven't painted the grille yet, but in white/gray it blends in well.
Top quality!
