This uncommon combination makes it one of the few high-end models capable of delivering its full potential from both a studio interface and a laptop.

The essence of the LCD range in a more accessible format

The LCD-MX4 borrows its Double Fluxor magnetic structure from the LCD-4, the most sophisticated model in the Audeze catalog, while retaining the LCD-X’s low-impedance driver. This hybrid architecture generates a flux density of 1.5 Tesla at the diaphragm, a value rarely achieved in the headphone field. The result is a high sensitivity of 105 dB/1mW, allowing use without a dedicated amplifier.

The neodymium magnets, arranged in dual arrays on either side of the ultra-thin diaphragm, enable precise control of membrane movement. Audeze’s proprietary Uniforce technology ensures uniform force distribution across the entire driver surface, reducing harmonic distortion to negligible levels. Fazor elements complete the system by guiding sound waves through the magnetic structure to preserve the signal’s temporal integrity.

Lightweight construction and extended listening sessions

The choice of magnesium for the earcups and carbon fiber for the suspension headband addresses a recurring demand from planar headphone users: reducing weight without compromising rigidity. At 570 grams, the LCD-MX4 remains substantial, but its weight distribution and adjustable headband allow comfortable wear for several hours. The lambskin ear pads incorporate memory foam and feature an asymmetric bevel, thicker at the rear than at the front, which naturally directs the drivers toward the ear canal.

The metal yokes allow lateral rotation and earcup tilt to accommodate different head shapes. The four-pin mini-XLR connection system, positioned at the front of each earcup, provides reliable locking while making cable replacement easier.

A sound signature designed for precision work

According to official specifications, frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 20 kHz, with usable extension beyond this range at both ends of the spectrum. Controlled and articulate bass delivers clarity that is especially useful for assessing the low frequencies of a mix without the typical exaggerations of many closed-back headphones. The midrange stands out for its transparency and ability to reveal instrumental and vocal textures, while the treble retains sufficient articulation without causing listening fatigue.

The open-back design promotes an expansive soundstage with clear separation between layers. This spatial presentation, combined with the system’s low distortion, brings listening closer to that of monitoring speakers in an acoustically treated room, an advantage for sound engineers who regularly work away from their main studio.

Connection and compatibility with common equipment

The 20 Ohm impedance puts the LCD-MX4 at odds with many planar headphones that require powerful amplifiers. A headphone output from an audio interface, mixing console or even a laptop may be enough to reach comfortable listening levels. This accessibility does not exclude the benefits of quality amplification, but it considerably broadens usage scenarios: on-location recording, mobile mixing, and home listening without a dedicated system.

The included OCC copper braided cable measures 1.9 meters and terminates in a 4-pin XLR connector. The included adapter allows connection to a 6.35 mm jack. An additional adapter will be required for sources with a 3.5 mm output.
