Questyle SIGMA: Portable DAC and Headphone Amplifier

The Questyle SIGMA is a portable digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier that brings together the flagship technologies of the Sino-American brand in a pocket-sized format. Equipped with the AKM AK4493 DAC, four patented current-mode amplification modules, and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity certified for Snapdragon Sound and LDAC, this device offers decoding capabilities up to 32-bit / 768 kHz PCM and DSD512. Its aerospace-grade aluminum casing with a transparent front houses a 4300 mAh battery for up to 12 hours of battery life, while triple certification from Apple MFi, Qualcomm, and Sony ensures broad compatibility with smartphones, computers, and game consoles.

A chassis that reveals the circuitry

The SIGMA’s construction goes beyond just a refined exterior. The CNC-machined aerospace aluminum body is covered on both sides with transparent optical glass that reveals the layout of the internal components. A gradient dot-matrix pattern runs across this glass surface and contributes to radio-frequency shielding thanks to a specific treatment. Questyle claims inspiration from the Bauhaus style, favoring clean lines and the absence of superfluous ornamentation. Amber-colored LEDs discreetly indicate the operating mode, gain level, and volume, without resorting to a screen.

Despite the use of robust materials, the device remains lightweight (under 200 grams), and its balance has been carefully tuned for a comfortable grip. However, the glass does attract fingerprints and can be prone to micro-scratches over time. Questyle offers a protective case, sold separately.

Current-mode amplification: four discrete symmetrical modules

Questyle’s patented Current Mode Amplifier (CMA) technology forms the core of the SIGMA. Unlike traditional amplifiers that operate in the voltage domain, this approach processes the signal in the current domain, which broadens the bandwidth and reduces transient intermodulation distortion. The SIGMA incorporates four fully discrete amplification stages arranged in a symmetrical configuration. This architecture allows peak current up to 3 A and output power exceeding 1,200 mW into 32 Ω on the balanced output.

The benefits of this design are particularly evident with headphones that are demanding in terms of impedance or sensitivity. The gain selector (Standard or High) and the IEM/headphone switch let you adapt the output to the type of earphones in use. In IEM mode, the signal chain has been optimized to ensure an extremely low noise floor, with no audible hiss.

TTA architecture and AKM conversion

The SIGMA uses the AKM AK4493 converter, a chip from the VELVETSOUND series known for its balance between musicality and technical precision. Questyle pairs it with its proprietary TTA (Three-Tier Architecture), a three-stage reclocking and filtering system designed to eliminate jitter regardless of source quality. The USB interface is based on an XMOS XU316 controller, identical to the one used in the CMA Eighteen Master.

The published measurements reflect this focus on signal purity: a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB, total harmonic distortion below 0.0002%, and a noise floor reaching -130 dB under Questyle lab test conditions. The device supports PCM streams up to 32-bit / 768 kHz and native DSD up to DSD512.

Wired and wireless connectivity

Two USB-C ports sit on the bottom edge: one dedicated to audio transfer, the other reserved exclusively for charging. This separation avoids interference between power and data and allows you to listen while charging the 4,300 mAh battery. Claimed battery life is up to 12 hours of continuous use.

Wired connection is driverless under Windows 10 (version 1803 and later), macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. MFi certification guarantees native compatibility with iPhones and iPads, while complying with Apple’s power consumption constraints.

Over Bluetooth 5.4, the SIGMA integrates the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound platform and benefits from dual Snapdragon Sound and Sony LDAC certification. Supported codecs include SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC (up to 24-bit / 96 kHz), as well as LE Audio for future applications. The wireless link enables high-resolution listening from a smartphone, tablet, computer, or console (Nintendo Switch, PSP, etc.).

Two outputs and a preamp function

The SIGMA offers a 4.4 mm balanced jack output and a 3.5 mm unbalanced mini-jack output. Beyond use as a headphone amp, the device can switch to Line-Out mode to feed powered speakers, a mixing console, or a hi-fi system via adapter cables (3.5 mm to RCA or 4.4 mm to XLR). This versatility makes it a useful tool for musicians or sound engineers who need to work on the move.
