Audeze LCD-X (standard case)

Since its launch in 2013, the LCD-X has established itself in recording studios around the world as a daily work tool for mixing and mastering. This reputation is based on a neutral sound signature, virtually imperceptible distortion and particularly fast transient response. The current version, the result of multiple successive refinements, incorporates the major technical developments introduced at the end of 2020: new drivers, a redesigned magnetic system and improved ergonomics.

Large-diameter planar magnetic drivers

The LCD-X features 106 mm diameter planar magnetic drivers, providing a radiating surface considerably larger than that of conventional dynamic headphones. This architecture makes it possible to move a significant volume of air while retaining an extremely lightweight diaphragm. The Uniforce diaphragms used by Audeze are just 0.5 microns thick, around 150 times thinner than a human hair.

The advantage of this thinness lies in transient response: the diaphragm reacts instantly to variations in the audio signal without the inertia characteristic of heavier diaphragms. In practice, this results in precise percussion attack and faithful reproduction of complex sounds with fast wavefronts.

The double-sided symmetrical magnetic system generates uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm. Unlike dynamic drivers, where the voice coil pushes the diaphragm from its center, the force here is applied evenly across the whole surface. This design directly contributes to the claimed total harmonic distortion rate of less than 1% across the entire audible spectrum.

Fazor: waveguides for optimized phase coherence

Fazor elements are among Audeze’s most significant proprietary technologies. Positioned on either side of the magnets, these waveguides direct sound waves to avoid the interference and diffraction that normally occur when sound passes through the magnetic structure.

The principle is similar to ripples in a pond: when several sources emit simultaneously, the waves can cancel each other out or reinforce each other unpredictably depending on where they meet. Fazors channel the acoustic flow so that different frequencies reach the ear with consistent time alignment.

The result is particularly noticeable in midrange clarity and the precision of the stereo image. The soundstage becomes easier to read, with each instrument occupying a distinct position in space. This characteristic partly explains the LCD-X’s adoption by sound engineers, who need to locate every element of a complex mix with certainty.

Unusual efficiency for planar headphones

With an impedance of 20 Ω and a sensitivity of 103 dB/1 mW, the LCD-X stands out clearly from most planar magnetic headphones, which traditionally require more power. These values allow it to be used directly connected to an audio interface, mixing console or even a portable player, without a dedicated amplifier.

This efficiency results from optimization work on the Fluxor magnetic circuit, which concentrates magnetic flux toward the diaphragm rather than dispersing it. Audeze was thus able to maintain high flux density without stacking additional magnets, which would have added weight to the assembly.

Nevertheless, the LCD-X fully benefits from a quality headphone amplifier. Recommended amplification power is between 1 and 4 W, corresponding to the output of most desktop headphone amplifiers. Beyond the simple matter of volume, a properly sized amplification stage improves bass control and overall dynamics.

Construction and long-term comfort

The LCD-X weighs 612 grams, a direct consequence of its robust anodized aluminum construction and large drivers. To compensate for this weight, Audeze has adopted a suspension headband that distributes weight across the top of the head without creating localized pressure points.

The lambskin leather earpads offer generous volume and an angled shape that creates substantial acoustic space around the ear. This distance between the earcup and the diaphragm contributes to the perceived breadth of the soundstage. The foam used in the current version has been reformulated to provide immediate elastic rebound rather than gradual memory-foam compression.

The open-back design allows air and sound to circulate in both directions. Isolation from the outside environment is therefore limited, and people nearby will hear part of what you are listening to. This deliberate compromise favors a sense of space and balanced acoustic pressure on either side of the diaphragm, improving comfort during extended listening sessions.

Connection and included accessories

The cable supplied with this standard edition uses high-purity OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) copper, braided and sheathed to withstand daily handling. On the headphone side, it uses two 4-pin mini-XLR connectors, securely attached to the earcups via a screw-on connection. On the source side, the cable ends in a 4-pin XLR connector, accompanied by a 6.35 mm jack adapter that covers most studio and home configurations.

The standard carrying case supplied in this package provides adequate protection for transport and storage. It is a semi-rigid case with internal padding, sufficient for everyday use without reaching the protection level of a professional flight case.

Software customization with Reveal+

Audeze offers the optional Reveal+ plugin, compatible with most digital audio workstations and software players. This module enables two distinct functions: first, applying a correction curve specific to the headphone model used to approach a studio monitor-style target response; second, creating a personalized HRTF profile from a photograph of the user’s ear.

Aural Map technology, developed in partnership with Embody, analyzes the geometry of the outer ear to model how each individual perceives the spatial localization of sounds. The result aims to reproduce more faithfully the sensation of listening through speakers in an acoustically treated room.

This plugin is not essential for using the LCD-X, which works perfectly without any software processing. It is an additional tool for those wishing to refine reproduction according to their preferences or specific professional needs.

Frequency response and acoustic behavior

The stated frequency range extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz, with a guaranteed response from 5 Hz to 20 kHz. Sub-bass frequencies extend low enough to reproduce the deepest fundamentals of an organ or the sub-bass of a modern electronic production. Treble extension beyond the audible spectrum contributes to preserving harmonics and to a natural sound on acoustic timbres.

Maximum sound pressure level exceeds 130 dB at 15 W, providing ample power reserve for the most demanding dynamic passages without compression or clipping. In practice, these extreme levels are never reached during normal listening, but they demonstrate the driver’s ability to handle peaks effortlessly.

The LCD-X’s overall tonal balance is characterized by deliberate neutrality, with slight lower-midrange warmth that avoids the analytical coldness sometimes criticized in monitoring headphones. Treble remains present and detailed without aggression, allowing for long listening sessions without listening fatigue.
