Three conductors rather than two

The principle of a balanced connection lies in subtraction. The receiving device receives the same signal twice, in phase and out of phase, then subtracts one from the other. Noise picked up along the way is identical on both lines and disappears during this subtraction. The mechanism assumes that the two paths are electrically equivalent; otherwise, noise rejection deteriorates.

This is precisely where the Red River’s Triple Balanced geometry comes in. Shielding used as a return conductor has neither the cross-section nor the impedance of the strand carrying the signal: the two paths become unbalanced. The cable therefore separates the roles with two identical signal conductors, a dedicated ground conductor, and shielding that does nothing but shield. The same construction is used for the RCA versions in the series, where it primarily provides a ground separate from the shield.

Solid copper with a smoothed surface

Each conductor is a single solid strand rather than a bundle. In a stranded cable, the strands make irregular contact and current jumps from one to another according to areas of oxidation, which Audioquest considers a source of dynamic distortion. The copper used, called Perfect Surface Copper, is low-oxidation copper whose surface is protected at every stage of wire drawing. The issue is what happens to the captured energy: conventional shielding drains it to the device’s ground, which serves as the reference for all downstream electronics. Modulating this reference amounts to modulating the signal itself.

The contacts are gold-plated, a material that does not oxidize and retains its contact resistance through repeated reconnections.

Another manufacturing choice: the ground bodies are stamped rather than machined from solid stock. Can this cable be used for a digital AES/EBU connection?

That is not its intended use. An AES/EBU connection also uses XLR connectors, but it requires a controlled characteristic impedance of 110 ohms, which an analog cable does not guarantee. What should I do if only one of my two devices has XLR connectors?
