Technics’ very first product, released in 1965, was a small two-way bookshelf speaker. Sixty years later, the Japanese brand returns to this territory with a coaxial driver that brings bass and treble together on the same axis. Compact and housed in a very understated matte black cabinet, these two-way speakers aim for clear, coherent reproduction throughout the space, wherever you sit in front of them.
The starting principle comes down to one idea: emitting bass and treble from the same point. The 2.5 cm aluminium dome tweeter is housed at the centre of the 15 cm woofer, so the two drivers share the same acoustic axis. Technics calls this configuration the Phase Precision Driver, or precise-phase driver. The benefit: the wavefronts from the two ways combine smoothly, refining instrument placement and keeping the soundstage stable as you move around the room. The assembly adopts the chassis structure used on the SB-G90M2, the brand’s high-end floorstanding speaker, transposed here into a much smaller format. Both diaphragms are made of anodised aluminium, a rigid material that retains its shape under pressure and limits unwanted deformation.
A coaxial driver alone is not enough: the waves must also emerge properly in phase. To achieve this, Technics adds a Linear Phase Plug, a part placed in front of the treble dome that realigns the phases and prevents the radiating surface from disturbing the wavefront. The woofer, meanwhile, features a Smooth Flow Diaphragm, with a shallow shape and softened edges, designed to reduce sound reflections on its own surface. The intended result is a nearly spherical wave with aligned wavefronts. The bass reflex port receives the same attention, with a profile that channels air to reduce chuffing noise when the bass is working hard.
A small speaker that vibrates colours the sound. To avoid this, Technics reinforces the enclosure with a low-resonance front baffle and internal bracing, an assembly developed through computer simulation (CAE). The balanced driver mounting system, which the brand calls BDMA, secures the driver at its centre of gravity, around the magnet, to contain movement and standing waves. Less vibration in the cabinet means a cleaner signal and lower distortion, which matters all the more in such a compact format.
Inside, Technics also pays close attention to the components that carry the signal. The passive crossover uses polypropylene film capacitors, renowned for their stability, while the internal wiring is oxygen-free copper (OFC) and the terminals are brass. These are choices that cannot be seen but contribute to overall clarity.
This is the point to examine closely before buying. With a sensitivity of 80 dB (1 W / 1 m), or 83 dB at 2.83 V, the SB-C600E-K are not among the easiest speakers to drive: they need an amplifier capable of delivering current. Technics recommends 40 to 120 W of power, and the nominal 4 Ω impedance calls for a model comfortable with this load. Power handling is rated at 60 W according to the IEC standard, 120 W peak. Put simply, a small amplifier with limited reserves will hold them back; a properly sized integrated amplifier, on the other hand, gives them room to breathe.

Yes, the two devices form the basis of the C600 series and naturally work together, with the SA-C600 combining an amplifier, network player and CD player. However, this pairing is not mandatory: any stereo amplifier suitable for a 4 Ω load will work.
Aluminum offers a good stiffness-to-mass ratio: the diaphragm moves like a piston without deforming too much, pushing distortion caused by cone deformation higher up the frequency spectrum. Anodizing strengthens the surface and improves its long-term durability.
Since the port is located at the rear, placing it flush against the wall tends to boost and muddy the bass. A few centimetres of clearance are often enough to restore a cleaner low end. Adjust according to the room and the desired sound.
Their compact size and 15 cm woofer make them well suited to small and medium-sized rooms, where a floorstanding speaker would quickly become too imposing. In a large space, they will remain balanced but will show their limits in terms of output level and bass extension, hence the benefit of an amplifier that does not hold them back.

Easy to set up and connect to Spotify, good sound quality. I was worried the Wi-Fi connection might be unstable, but so far everything is working well. Installed in the upstairs living room.
