The Gold 3 is a moving iron cartridge developed by Grado, drawing on over 70 years of experience in phono cartridge design. It is selected from a fraction of the Silver 3 production, based on specific performance criteria. Equipped with patented OTL technology and high-purity copper wiring, it is designed to deliver faithful sound reproduction, with a focus on the texture of voices and instruments.
The Gold 3 stands out thanks to its four-piece OTL (Optimized Transmission Line) cantilever, an architecture exclusive to Grado that ensures optimal signal transfer from the groove to the generator. This sophisticated construction features an elliptical diamond mounted on a brass bushing, a configuration chosen for its ability to precisely follow groove modulations while minimizing record wear.
At the heart of this cartridge is a mechanically machined generator, specially designed to reduce distortion and enhance transparency. This approach is radically different from conventional moving magnet cartridges: here, a lightweight ferromagnetic element moves within the field of four fixed coils arranged according to the patented Flux-Bridger principle. This configuration achieves one of the lowest effective moving masses on the market, ensuring exceptional transient response.
The dual-magnet system optimizes the balance between stereo channels, with each component of the magnetic circuit maintained within extremely tight tolerances. This assembly precision, inherited from the watchmaking background of Joseph Grado, the brand’s founder, results in channel separation reaching 35 dB at 1 kHz—a remarkable value for a cartridge in this category.
The recent development of the prestigious Lineage series has enabled technology transfer to the Prestige models. The coil winding techniques, perfected for high-end cartridges, now use UHPLC (Ultra High Purity Long Crystal) copper wire on the Gold 3. This improvement allows the four coils to achieve perfect electrical synchronization, an essential condition for a precise and stable stereo image.
Experience gained with the Epoch cartridge also inspired a new chassis treatment process. This “destressing” technique dissipates parasitic energies and unwanted resonance frequencies, allowing the musical signal to flow freely. The result is a remarkable background silence and an increased ability to reveal micro-details buried in the grooves.
The OTL technology itself has been refined over generations. By actively rejecting parasitic resonances, it preserves the integrity of fundamental and harmonic frequencies. In practice, this results in a soundstage that is higher, wider, and deeper than previous models, with a notable improvement in instrument localization within the space.
Listening to the Gold 3 immediately reveals Grado’s sonic philosophy: prioritizing naturalness and harmonic coherence. The midrange, Grado cartridges’ favorite territory, offers a particularly seductive texture. Human voices benefit from natural projection, with that rare ability to convey the warmth and presence of a performer without artifice. Acoustic instruments—guitars, pianos, brass—regain their full harmonic body, with the characteristic density of well-mastered analog sound.
In the treble range, the Gold 3 adopts a measured but never dull approach. High frequencies extend smoothly and with refinement, carefully avoiding any artificial brightness. This philosophy may surprise those used to more analytical cartridges, but it pays off in the long run: the absence of listening fatigue allows for extended sessions, an essential criterion for any music lover.
Tracking tests reveal remarkable capabilities for a cartridge equipped with a bonded elliptical diamond. The Gold 3 handles even the most heavily modulated passages with ease, including the notorious +16 dB torture tracks on test records. This performance is explained by the optimized tracking force, ideally set at 1.5 grams, with an operating range from 1.0 to 2.0 grams.
With a compliance of 20 μm/mN, the Gold 3 falls into the medium-high category, making it compatible with most modern tonearms. The best results are achieved with tonearms of effective mass between 9 and 18 grams, thus covering the majority of contemporary turntables. The arm/cartridge resonance frequency ideally sits between 8 and 12 Hz with most setups.
A frequently debated aspect concerns the sensitivity of Grado cartridges to electromagnetic fields. While certain turntable/cartridge combinations can indeed generate a slight hum—particularly on direct-drive turntables where the motor is close to the cartridge path—this phenomenon is generally discreet and does not affect all setups. Belt-drive turntables, with their remote motors, are naturally more compatible.
Both models share identical construction, but the Gold 3 represents the pinnacle of quality selection. After rigorous testing, only 5% of Silver 3 units produced meet the higher specifications required to become Gold 3. This stringent selection guarantees tighter tolerances and optimal performance.
The optimal tracking force is generally around 1.5 to 1.75 grams according to tests. Anti-skating should be set to the same value as the tracking force. Alignment is crucial: the cartridge must be perfectly parallel to the platter to ensure optimal groove tracking.
Although the cartridge already offers excellent performance from the first listen, a 72-hour break-in mainly improves tracking capabilities. Sonic changes remain subtle, as the Gold 3 is designed to deliver its characteristic sound signature from the very first hours.
The Gold 3 works well with most MM phono preamplifiers with a standard 47 kΩ input impedance. Its comfortable 5 mV output makes it compatible with built-in phono stages. The best results are achieved with neutral or slightly warm preamplifiers.
Although similar in appearance and compatibility, the Moving Iron principle uses a mobile ferromagnetic element that is lighter than the magnet in classic MM cartridges. This reduced mass improves transient response and contributes to the distinctive sound signature of Grado cartridges, combining dynamics with natural smoothness.

Good cartridge, matches perfectly with my Linn Akito tonearm both aesthetically and in terms of listening quality if you have a good phono preamp.
Very good value for money and if you need to replace the diamond, the price remains reasonable.
