The Samsung TQ65S90D embodies the technological maturity of the Korean manufacturer’s OLED range for 2024. This 165 cm 4K television features a QD-OLED panel manufactured by Samsung Display, paired with the NQ4 AI Gen2 processor and a high-performance anti-glare filter. Designed for both cinema enthusiasts and demanding gamers, it displays a native frequency of 120 Hz expandable to 144 Hz, while maintaining a remarkably slim profile thanks to its LaserSlim design.
The 65-inch model of the S90D benefits from a QD-OLED panel, a technology developed by Samsung Display that distinguishes this television from its 42, 48, 55, 77 and 83-inch variants. Unlike traditional OLEDs, this panel combines self-emissive OLED pixels producing blue light with quantum dots that convert this light into red and green. This approach delivers enhanced brightness and more vivid colors than conventional WOLED screens.
QD-OLED technology stands out for its ability to reproduce colors close to those observed in nature, combining the three primary colors with more than 90% of the BT.2020 space and 99% of DCI-P3. The quantum dot nano-crystals emit light uniformly in all directions, thus ensuring particularly wide viewing angles without degradation of brightness or hues.
The NQ4 AI Gen2 processor orchestrates everything with its 20 neural networks dedicated to real-time image analysis and optimization. The Real Depth Enhancer function mimics the human eye’s depth processing by increasing contrast in the foreground, creating a sense of relief without distorting the background. AI-based 4K upscaling transforms lower-definition content to adapt it to the screen’s native resolution.
Compared to the 2023 S90C, the S90D displays approximately 20% higher brightness, reaching peaks of 1,300 nits on this model. This improvement proves particularly beneficial for HDR content rendering, where bright areas gain impact without compromising the deep blacks characteristic of OLED technology.
Pantone certification validates the accuracy and naturalness of displayed colors, with more than 2,030 different shades for faithful scene representation. The television supports HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive for automatic optimization according to ambient lighting conditions, and HLG formats. Samsung maintains its historical approach by not offering Dolby Vision, a constant for the brand across its entire range.
The anti-glare filter applied to the panel significantly reduces parasitic reflections in bright environments. This matte surface maintains high image quality even with direct or indirect light sources in the room, a notable advantage over traditional glossy panels that can suffer in these conditions.
The LaserSlim design features a thickness of only 39.9 mm without the stand, allowing discreet wall mounting. The central stand that equips the S90D replaces the two side feet of the S90C, facilitating positioning on furniture of various dimensions while offering increased stability. This spatial titanium finish support mounts without screws, simplifying installation.
All four sides of the screen are devoid of visible bezels, maximizing the display surface and reinforcing the window effect on the image. The graphite black front integrates naturally into contemporary interiors. The television weighs 21.2 kg without its stand, a controlled weight for a panel of this diagonal that facilitates handling during installation.
Connectivity is distributed on the rear panel with four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K at 120 Hz and even 144 Hz, two USB-A ports, an optical output, an Ethernet input and antenna connections. The 300 × 200 mm VESA support allows the use of a wide range of wall mounts on the market.
The panel natively displays 120 Hz and supports up to 144 Hz via the Motion Xcelerator 144Hz function, allowing gamers equipped with compatible PCs to benefit from maximum fluidity. The S90D integrates the FreeSync Premium Pro standard, an evolution from the S90C’s FreeSync Premium, guaranteeing synchronization between the graphics card and screen to eliminate screen tearing.
The OLED pixels’ response time, virtually instantaneous, eliminates ghosting effects even in the most dynamic action scenes. Automatic game mode (ALLM) detects consoles and automatically switches to optimized settings, while the dark area optimizer reveals details in dimly lit environments without overexposing bright areas.
The integrated Gaming Hub brings together game streaming services such as Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, Utomik, Antstream Arcade and Blacknut, allowing gaming without a console or PC. Bluetooth controllers from major brands (Xbox, PlayStation, Logitech) connect directly to the television. The Gaming Hub also provides access to connected consoles and PCs, centralizing all gaming sources in a single interface.
The 2.1-channel audio system delivers 40 W of power distributed across three speakers. Several reviewers have noted that the S90D paradoxically offers superior audio performance to the higher-end S95D model, with more sound pressure and increased dynamics.
Dolby Atmos compatibility reproduces height effects on compatible content, while OTS Lite (Object Tracking Sound) technology synchronizes sound with on-screen movements. Active Voice Amplifier Pro, a new version replacing the S90C’s Active Voice Amplifier, uses artificial intelligence to amplify dialogue and adapt to ambient noise in real time.
The Q-Symphony function allows the television to work in concert with a compatible Samsung soundbar, with the television and soundbar speakers operating simultaneously to create an expanded sound field. Bidirectional Bluetooth audio allows the connection of wireless headphones or broadcasting of the television’s sound to an external speaker.
Tizen OS in its 2024 version equips the S90D, bringing minor improvements over the S90C’s Tizen 2023, integrating the latest developments in artificial intelligence, connected features and content access. The interface groups popular streaming applications (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, Canal+) accessible directly from the home screen.
The integrated SmartThings hub allows direct connection and control of home devices compatible with Matter and HCA standards, without additional equipment. Notifications on the status of connected devices appear on screen, transforming the television into a home command center.
The Bixby, Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants are all supported, offering multiple options for controlling the television and connected devices by voice. The supplied SolarCell TM2360E remote control recharges via solar energy or indoor lighting, and also has a USB-C port as backup.
Samsung Electronics waited until 2022 to launch its first consumer OLED televisions, despite decades of leadership in screens. Founded in 1969 as a subsidiary of the Samsung Group in Suwon, Samsung Electric Industries produced its first black and white television in 1970. In 1976, the brand crossed the milestone of one million televisions manufactured, and in 1978, it reached 5 million units produced, surpassing all other global manufacturers.
The name Samsung, which means “3 stars” in Korean, reflects founder Lee Byung-chul’s ambition. In 1988, Samsung Electric Industries and Samsung Semiconductor & Communications merged to form Samsung Electronics, marking the beginning of vertical integration that would allow the group to produce its own components.
In 2019, Samsung Display announced an investment of $10.8 billion in QD-OLED panel research and production. This technology won the Best of Innovation award at CES 2022, validating Samsung’s approach that combines the strengths of quantum dots developed since 2015 with those of self-emissive pixels.
The S90D illustrates the manufacturer’s strategy: offering advanced display technology in a range positioned below the flagship S95D model, making QD-OLED accessible to a wider audience while maintaining high performance. The S90D represents a relevant choice for those seeking a high-performance OLED television in both dark and bright environments.
The 65-inch model (reference with the letter “T” such as TQ65S90D) integrates a QD-OLED panel manufactured by Samsung Display. The 42, 48, 55, 77 and 83-inch models use W-OLED panels supplied by LG Display, recognizable by the letter “E” in their reference (example: TQ55S90DAEXXC). This difference translates into slightly distinct colorimetric and brightness characteristics depending on the chosen size.
The integrated 40 W audio system offers decent quality for everyday use, with good dialogue rendering thanks to Active Voice Amplifier Pro. For more advanced cinema use, adding a soundbar with subwoofer will provide deeper bass and an expanded soundstage. The Q-Symphony function allows the television speakers and a compatible Samsung soundbar to work together.
The integrated Gaming Hub provides access to several cloud gaming services (Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, Utomik, Antstream Arcade, Blacknut) that allow direct gaming without a console or PC, only with an Internet connection and a compatible Bluetooth controller. The television also retains its four HDMI 2.1 ports for connecting traditional consoles or a gaming computer.
The integrated SmartThings hub allows connection and control of smart home devices compatible with Matter and HCA standards directly from the television, without additional equipment. The screen displays device status notifications and allows control via the dedicated interface or supported voice assistants.
The television has an intelligent calibration mode that automatically adjusts settings. Pantone certification guarantees accurate and natural colors straight out of the box. Enthusiasts can nevertheless fine-tune settings via the numerous parameters available in the menus, or use professional calibration with a probe for maximum accuracy.
