Positioned at the heart of the Japanese manufacturer’s range, the Nagaoka MP-200 MM cartridge incorporates technologies usually reserved for higher-end models, offering a compelling alternative for discerning audiophiles. Its boron cantilever and Superfine elliptical stylus promise precise and musical playback, particularly well-suited to jazz and classical repertoires.
Nagaoka’s Legacy in Service of Analog
With over 80 years of expertise in the manufacture of needles and precision components, Nagaoka has developed a unique approach in the industry by mastering the entire production chain. Unlike most manufacturers who assemble external components, the Japanese brand designs and manufactures every element of its cartridges, from the cantilever to the diamond tip, including coils and magnets.
This vertical integration allows for exemplary quality control and an acoustic consistency that is hard to match. The MP (Moving Permalloy) series, to which the MP-200 belongs, benefits from this industrial philosophy, notably featuring a nickel-iron Permalloy alloy oscillator at the rear of the cantilever to optimize tracking stability. The particularly powerful Samarium-Cobalt magnet ensures a stable and homogeneous magnetic field.
Technical Innovation and Material Choices
The boron cantilever is the major innovation that sets the MP-200 apart from its predecessor, the MP-150. This material boasts the highest tensile strength of any known element, surpassing even the aluminum and titanium traditionally used in this price range. This exceptional mechanical property results in increased rigidity and a drastic reduction in unwanted resonances, allowing for more faithful transmission of the groove’s micrometric variations.
The Superfine elliptical stylus, cut to 0.4 × 0.7 mm specifications, ensures optimal contact with the groove walls. This optimized geometry reduces record wear while improving retrieval of high-frequency information. The carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body incorporates effective magnetic shielding against external interference.
Compatibility and Easy Installation
The high static compliance of 20 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne and the contained weight of 6.5 g give the MP-200 broad compatibility with tonearms of low to medium effective mass. This versatility allows installation on a wide variety of turntables, from classic Thorens and Dual models to modern Pro-Ject and Rega units, not to mention Lenco, Garrard, or Linn references.
The standard 1/2-inch mounting system simplifies installation, with all necessary accessories provided, including sets of screws in various lengths and adapter washers. For users seeking a turnkey solution, Nagaoka offers the MP-200H version pre-mounted on an SME headshell, eliminating alignment and adjustment constraints.
The recommended tracking force of 1.5 to 2 grams remains within a standard range, making it easy to achieve optimal balance without complex adjustments. The 4 mV output level ensures universal compatibility with both built-in and standalone MM phono stages.

Good evening ,I changed my old 540ml on my planar 2 to the MP200 , the Nagaoka has a full midrange, a bit warm,a punchy bass, and a black background where you can hear details that are hard to hear with other cartridges. The 540ml is more analytical ,transparent, fast ,precise but it is less musical !!!! The MP200 is addictive ,on jazz it is sublime! For less than 700 euros I don't see anything better than this uncommon cartridge. Franck

Franck
