Diapason d'Or

The number 1 in classical music and hi-fi. It is a benchmark in the field of classical music and hi-fi, as well as the distinction it awards to the best devices each year

Overview

The Hana SL MKII represents the culmination of over five decades of Japanese expertise in phono cartridge design. This low-output moving coil cartridge combines traditional materials with modern techniques to deliver music reproduction of remarkable finesse. Featuring a new conical aluminum cantilever, cryogenically treated components, and the same generator as the brand’s high-end models, it sets new standards in its price category.

Technical Innovations of the MKII

The SL MKII incorporates technologies derived from the Umami Blue and ML models. The major change lies in the new conical aluminum cantilever, which offers increased rigidity and reduced mass at the diamond tip. This geometry substantially improves the transfer of groove modulations.

The cryogenic treatment of critical components—yoke, pole pieces, and gold-plated pins—alters the crystalline structure of the metals for more natural reproduction. This technique, inherited from the high-end models, contributes to the transparency and musicality characteristic of the MKII.

Technical Architecture and Construction

The generator uses an Alnico magnet and cross-wound coils made of 30-micron high-purity copper wire. With only 8 ohms of impedance, this configuration minimizes moving mass while optimizing the signal-to-noise ratio.

The body adopts the non-resonant shape of the M series, with a black elastomer damping coating. The threaded brass top plate brings the total mass to 8.6 grams, improving mechanical coupling and broadening compatibility with different tonearms.

Sound Performance and Listening Characteristics

The SL MKII stands out for its presentation that is both dynamic and refined. The nude Shibata diamond extracts a remarkable amount of information while preserving records. The sound signature combines fundamental neutrality with a slight warmth in the midrange, giving vocals a palpable presence.

The bass is articulated without heaviness, and the treble extends naturally up to 32 kHz without harshness. The soundstage impresses with its width and depth, offering exemplary instrument separation. The improvements to the cantilever result in increased dynamics and better-defined transients.

Compatibility and Implementation

With 2 grams of tracking force and a compliance of 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne, the SL MKII is well-suited to medium-mass tonearms. Its output level of 0.4 mV requires an MC preamplifier offering 60–65 dB of gain and a load of at least 80 ohms.

The tracking ability of 70 μm ensures flawless playback of demanding passages. Channel balance below 1.5 dB and separation of 28 dB guarantee a stable stereo image. Break-in requires 20 to 40 hours to reveal the cartridge’s full sonic potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical lifespan of the SL MKII’s Shibata diamond?

Thanks to its extended contact profile, the Shibata diamond generally offers a lifespan of 1,500 to 2,000 listening hours under normal use. Its sophisticated geometry distributes wear over a larger contact area, extending its longevity compared to traditional elliptical profiles.

Is the SL MKII suitable for mono records?

Although the SL MKII is a stereo cartridge with vertical compliance, it can play mono records. However, Hana offers a specific SL Mono MKII version for collectors of mono pressings, providing optimized reproduction of these historic recordings with an impedance of 23 ohms.

How does the increased mass of the MKII affect compatibility with light tonearms?

The increase in mass from 5 to 8.6 grams paradoxically broadens compatibility. This additional mass, concentrated in the brass top plate, improves mechanical coupling without negatively affecting the arm/cartridge system’s resonance, making the MKII compatible with a wider range of tonearms.

What is the main difference between the SL MKII and the SH MKII?

The SH MKII is the high-output version (2 mV) designed for MM inputs. It uses a coil impedance of 130 ohms versus 8 ohms for the SL, allowing direct use with standard MM phono preamplifiers, at the expense of a slight reduction in ultimate resolution.

Hello
First, some context
I have two turntables
1 / Project Xtension 9 Evolution + Phono Box RS + Power RS Phono power supply, on which I installed the HANA SL
2 / Turntable with a DIY plinth based on a JVC QL-7 mechanism, onto which I moved the Ortofon 2M Bronze that was on the Pro-Ject, all connected directly to the amp’s MM phono input
The amplifier is the same for both: a Technics SU-G700 and Triangle Magellan Quatuor speakers
It’s clear the sources aren’t in the same budget range—well under €1,000 for the second source versus several thousand euros for the first
That said, it’s still interesting to compare, and I have to say there is a difference, but not as big as you might expect—it’s actually very close. Both setups offer a nice soundstage, detail, and a good balance. You need to concentrate to appreciate the subtleties the HANA cartridge brings
That’s why I’m always cautious about over-the-top comments
That said, I don’t regret my choice at all. It’s a very good cartridge, very easy to install, with detailed but non-aggressive sound; it stays smooth without adding any particular warmth that would distort the recording, nor recessed bass. The overall presentation seems very balanced, with surface noise practically absent
As always, you’re mainly dependent on the recording quality—that’s actually point number one
So it’s a good choice if you can afford it

Bonjour
