Overview
A subwoofer that goes down to 18 Hz without software tricks is rare. The Reference Sub is the first subwoofer in Canton’s 2023 Reference range, a series completely renewed after the replacement of the 2015 K generation. Manufactured in Weilrod, Germany, at the brand’s historic headquarters, it shares the same materials and design philosophy as the speakers in the series: curved shapes, a BCT (Black Ceramic Tungsten) cone, and a base integrating the Bass-Guide system.
Front-firing and passive radiator: an effective combination
The Reference Sub uses an uncommon hybrid configuration. The main 308 mm driver, front-firing, works in tandem with a passive radiator of identical dimensions positioned under the cabinet (downfire). This layout combines the advantages of two approaches: the direct energy of a front woofer and the bass extension provided by a large-diameter passive radiator, without the turbulence of a conventional bass-reflex port.
The cabinet’s generous internal volume (53 cm deep) gives the whole system the necessary space to operate in the lowest frequencies. Canton claims a response going down to 18 Hz, a value that the built-in DSP processing allows it to reach with precision.
BCT cone: aluminium transformed
BCT (Black Ceramic Tungsten) technology is the result of a transformation process in which 25% of the molecular structure of an aluminium cone is converted into ceramic, then enriched with tungsten particles and other metals. The result is a black cone on both sides that retains the lightness of aluminium while gaining rigidity.
On a subwoofer, this increased rigidity translates into better control of cone movement during large excursions. Transients remain clean, and bass retains its definition even at high volume. The Wave Surround (multi-curved surround) around the driver allows for long excursions while keeping the cone on axis.
500 watts and DSP dedicated to precision
The built-in digital amplifier delivers 500 W continuous (750 W peak). This power drives the BCT woofer via DSP processing that fulfils several functions: frequency response equalization, overload protection (Canton’s SC technology), and room acoustic compensation (Room Compensation).
The Room Compensation function offers three positions. This setting allows the behaviour of the subwoofer to be adapted according to its placement: near a wall, in a corner, or free-standing in the room. The Wide, Normal, and Narrow modes modify the deep bass response to avoid the low-frequency build-ups characteristic of certain placements.
The rear controls include a volume knob, phase adjustment, and a variable crossover frequency between 55 Hz and 200 Hz. High-level inputs (speaker terminals) and low-level inputs (RCA) ensure compatibility with all types of amplifiers and processors.
The Bass-Guide system integrated into the base
The Reference Sub’s base takes up the Bass-Guide principle developed for the floorstanding speakers in the Reference series. This floating plinth, mechanically decoupled from the floor by CNC-machined feet with PVD treatment, channels and distributes low frequencies evenly throughout the room.
Bass-Guide reduces the influence of positioning on bass response. A subwoofer placed in a corner or against a wall usually exhibits a strong boost in the lowest frequencies, sometimes at the expense of articulation. This wave-guide system mitigates these variations and offers welcome flexibility during setup.
Cabinet construction: simulated bracing, curved forms
The Reference Sub’s cabinet is built from thick multilayer panels. The internal bracing has been sized using computer simulation to target the specific resonance modes of this volume and geometry. The panels adopt smooth curves that break with the boxy shapes of conventional subwoofers.
This design without sharp edges limits internal reflections and helps damp standing waves inside the cabinet. The total weight of 37 kg reflects the density of the construction. The acoustically neutral fabric grille is attached by magnets, with no visible screws.
Two finishes are available: high-gloss black lacquer (twelve coats of varnish, sanded and polished) or matte satin white. The dimensions (49 × 59 × 53 cm) require a substantial amount of space, but the rounded shapes visually lighten the presence of the subwoofer in the room.
Integration with the Reference series and other systems
The Reference Sub has been designed to accompany the speakers in the 2023 Reference series (Reference 1 to 9, Reference Center), but it will work with any stereo or home cinema system. The crossover frequency range (55–200 Hz) and multiple inputs allow it to adapt to speakers with varied characteristics.
For multichannel setups, the presence of a filtered output makes it easier to connect a second subwoofer. Auto power-on (signal detection) simplifies everyday use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Reference Sub compatible with speakers from other brands?
Yes, the subwoofer offers high-level and low-level inputs, an adjustable crossover frequency, and phase control. These parameters allow it to be integrated into a wide range of systems, not just with Canton speakers.
Which cable should be used for connection?
For a low-level connection (the most common), a standard RCA cable is sufficient. For longer runs, a good-quality subwoofer cable with proper shielding is recommended. The high-level input accepts standard speaker cable.
How does Room Compensation work?
A three-position switch (Wide, Normal, Narrow) modifies the low-frequency response. Wide extends the bass for placement away from walls, while Narrow attenuates the lowest frequencies to compensate for the natural boost when the subwoofer is placed in a corner or against a wall.
Does the auto power-on work with all amplifiers?
Signal detection is sensitive to low-level signals. With some amplifiers that send a slight background noise, the subwoofer may remain on permanently. A switch allows you to force manual power-on if needed.
