Overview

Canton, a German manufacturer based in the Taunus region since 1972, developed the Townus 100 to meet a straightforward demand: to offer a floorstanding speaker capable of filling large living spaces without sacrificing finesse. This 3-way bass-reflex model uses the drivers and expertise from the brand’s higher ranges, with an enlarged cabinet volume and two 192 mm woofers.

A design conceived for large rooms

The Townus 100 measures 110 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. These dimensions make it a substantial speaker, but its proportions remain balanced thanks to careful work on the cabinet edges: the corners are rounded, which reduces acoustic diffraction while softening the silhouette. The plinth, slightly recessed, creates a visual “floating” effect and integrates four height-adjustable metal feet to stabilize the speaker on different types of flooring.

The cabinet is reinforced with multiple internal bracings. The midrange driver, positioned high on the front baffle, has its own isolated acoustic chamber, a separation that limits interference between frequency bands. The four drivers are mounted with no visible screws thanks to aluminum rings machined using the “Seamless Diamond Cut” process, giving the front panel a clean, seamless appearance. An acoustically transparent fabric grille attaches magnetically.

Three finishes are available: matte satin white, high-gloss black lacquer, and genuine walnut veneer.

Ceramic and titanium: two materials, four drivers

Canton has long used aluminum oxide-ceramic diaphragms for its tweeters. The one in the Townus 100, a 25 mm dome, covers a range extending up to 40 kHz, making it compatible with high-resolution files (24-bit FLAC, DSD). A computer-optimized waveguide improves acoustic coupling and ensures even dispersion both on-axis and off-axis.

The 174 mm midrange and the two 192 mm woofers share a titanium diaphragm technology (an aluminum-titanium composite). This “Triple Curved Cone” diaphragm features three successive curvatures that increase rigidity without adding weight. The “Wave Surround” suspensions, with their multiple folds, allow for greater excursion while reducing unwanted resonances.

The two woofers operate in parallel, effectively doubling the radiating surface. Combined with Canton’s patented SC (Suspension Control) technology, they maintain controlled excursion even at the lowest frequencies, where other diaphragms can become unstable.

Down-firing bass-reflex

The bass-reflex port is located in the plinth, facing downward (“downfire” configuration). This layout offers several advantages: it allows the speaker to be placed closer to the rear wall without causing excessive bass reinforcement, and it excites the room more evenly than a conventional rear port. Placement remains flexible, although a minimum clearance (around twenty centimeters) from the walls is recommended to avoid a “boomy” effect.

The stated frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 40 kHz. These figures are measured with the manufacturer’s standard tolerance; in real-world conditions, low-frequency extension depends strongly on room volume and acoustic treatment. In a 30 to 50 m² living room, the Townus 100 can do without a subwoofer for stereo music.

Power handling and amplifier matching

Continuous power handling is 180 W, with a musical (peak) power of 340 W. Impedance varies between 4 and 8 ohms depending on frequency. These values indicate that an amplifier stable with low-impedance loads (4 ohms) will be more comfortable than an entry-level model limited to 8 ohms. A quality integrated amp from 2 × 80 W will be sufficient for normal home use; to fully exploit the speaker’s dynamic potential at high volume, a more powerful unit (2 × 150 W or more) will be preferable.

The rear binding posts accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. They are gold-plated to limit oxidation.

Integration into a home cinema system

The Townus series includes several models designed to work together. The Townus 100 can be used as front speakers, combined with a Townus 50 as a center channel (same tweeter, same midrange) and compact Townus 30 models for the surround channels. The Townus Sub 12 subwoofer, with its 300 mm driver and built-in amplifier, completes the setup for movie enthusiasts who want additional low-frequency extension.

Canton also offers the Smart Amp 5.1, a compact multichannel amplifier compatible with the Townus series, which includes wireless streaming features.

Compared with the Townus 90

The Townus 90, the next model down in the range, uses the same ceramic tweeter and the same 174 mm midrange, but its two woofers measure 174 mm (versus 192 mm for the 100). The cabinet is about 5 cm shorter and has a smaller internal volume. In practice, the difference is noticeable in deep bass and in the ability to fill rooms larger than 25–30 m²: the Townus 100 offers more dynamic headroom and greater low-end authority.

For a modestly sized living room (15–25 m²), the Townus 90 remains a relevant option, less bulky and just as tonally balanced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the front grilles removable?

Yes, they attach magnetically and can be removed without tools. Listening without grilles slightly alters high-frequency dispersion, and some listeners prefer this configuration.

Can the Townus 100 be bi-wired?

No, the speaker has a single set of binding posts. Bi-wiring is not provided on this model.

What is the minimum distance from the rear wall?

Canton recommends around twenty centimeters, but the downfire port configuration allows for closer placement than conventional rear-ported speakers. Experiment according to your room’s acoustics.

What is the purpose of the level adjustment mentioned in the specifications?

This control, accessible on the rear panel, allows you to slightly attenuate the tweeter or midrange to adapt the sound to your room’s acoustics or to personal preference.
