Tonewinner AD5100 PA+: the five-channel power amplifier
With thirty years of experience manufacturing components for brands like Advance Paris, Emotiva, or Nuforce, Tonewinner has been marketing its own electronics for several years. The AD5100 PA+ is the entry-level model in its multichannel amplifier range, with five independent class AB channels and a toroidal transformer capable of effortlessly powering the main speakers or the Atmos channels in a home theater system.
A power stage based on proven transistors
The heart of the AD5100 PA+ is built around five pairs of complementary Toshiba TTC5200 (NPN) and TTA1943 (PNP) transistors. These components, widely used in audio amplifiers for years, can handle up to 15 amperes and dissipate 150 watts each. This comfortable headroom allows the amp to deliver its 100 watts into 8 ohms (140 watts into 4 ohms) per channel with ease, even during demanding dynamic passages.
The power supply is based on a generously sized toroidal transformer, combined with two Decon filtering capacitors of 15,000 µF / 63 V. The choice of a toroidal transformer is no accident: this type of transformer generates less electromagnetic radiation than a classic EI model and offers better efficiency. In practice, this results in a more stable power supply and a lower noise floor.
Differential design and low noise
The amplification circuit uses a differential topology on each channel. This configuration, common in hi-fi, effectively rejects common-mode interference and improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Tonewinner specifies an SNR greater than 100 dB (A-weighted), a value consistent with this type of design. A thermal compensation circuit adjusts the transistor bias point according to their temperature, stabilizing performance during prolonged use.
Total harmonic distortion remains below 0.1% across the entire frequency range (20 Hz to 30 kHz, ±3 dB). These measurements, taken at 1 kHz, are in line with market standards for an amplifier in this category.
Cooling and built-in protections
The brushed aluminum chassis provides an initial layer of passive heat dissipation. Two quiet fans take over when the internal temperature requires it; they are activated automatically and gradually. This system allows for long listening sessions with no risk of overheating, even at high volume in a poorly ventilated room.
The electronics include several protection stages: overvoltage, overcurrent, overload, short circuit, and overheating. In the event of a fault, the LED for the affected channel changes from blue to red to indicate the problem. These protections safeguard both the amp and the speakers connected to it.
Connectivity and system integration
Each channel has a 24-carat gold-plated RCA input. The speaker terminals accept large-gauge cables, banana plugs, and spades. A 12 V trigger input makes it possible to synchronize power-on with a preamplifier or home theater processor: the AD5100 PA+ turns on automatically when the preamp is powered up, then goes into standby when the latter is switched off. This detail simplifies daily use in a multi-component setup.
The supply voltage is automatically detected (110–115 V or 220–230 V, 50/60 Hz), which makes installation easier regardless of the country. Five front-panel LEDs indicate the activity of each channel, with brightness varying according to signal level.
Use cases
The AD5100 PA+ can power the five main speakers in a 5.1 system or serve as a dedicated block for effects channels (surround and Atmos height) in a more ambitious configuration. Paired with the AT-300 preamplifier from the same brand, it forms a coherent package for setups up to 9.x.4 channels, alongside other power amps. Its moderate size (431 × 130 × 330 mm, 9.6 kg) allows it to fit into most standard hi-fi cabinets.
Speakers with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms do not pose any particular problem; available power then increases to 140 watts per channel. However, be cautious with very low impedance loads (less than 4 ohms) on several channels simultaneously: although the protections limit the risks, it is best to avoid this configuration on a continuous basis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the AD5100 PA+ to power three front speakers and two surround speakers at the same time?
Yes, this is precisely the intended configuration. All five channels are strictly identical in power and behavior. You are free to assign the speakers according to the needs of your setup.
Will the amplifier work in Europe and the United States without modification?
Voltage detection is automatic. The unit supports 110–115 V and 220–230 V mains at 50 or 60 Hz. A simple change of power cord is all that’s needed to move from one country to another.
Is the fan noise audible while listening?
The fans only switch on above a certain temperature threshold. In normal home use, they often remain off. When they do run, their noise level is low, but they may become noticeable in a quiet room if the amp is driven hard for an extended period.
Is the trigger input essential?
No, the amp works perfectly without it. The trigger simply adds convenience by automating power on and off. Without this connection, you just use the front-panel button or leave the amp in permanent standby.
Can I connect a subwoofer to one of the channels?
Technically, yes, if your subwoofer is passive. In practice, active subwoofers (with built-in amplification) are more common and are connected directly to the preamplifier via their line input. The AD5100 PA+ is not optimized for very low frequencies (below 20 Hz) that some subwoofers reproduce.
