Overview

A 1.6 kg metallic black cube that projects up to a 150-inch diagonal image, handles 4K Pro UHD, features Bose-tuned sound, and runs on Google TV. The EF-62B belongs to Epson’s Lifestudio range, the manufacturer’s first to combine 3LCD technology with RGB LED backlighting. It follows the all-in-one video projector philosophy introduced by the EF-12, but takes a step forward in image definition and software platform.

A format that slips unnoticed into a bag

At 199 × 190 × 75 mm and 1.6 kg, the EF-62B fits in one hand. The metallic black plastic shell is rigid, with no play or creaking, and its nearly cubic shape gives it a discreet look once placed on a piece of furniture. A standard ¼-inch threaded mount, located under the unit, allows it to be fixed to a photo tripod or a ceiling mount.

Operating noise is kept under control: 24 dB in normal mode, 20 dB in eco mode. That’s low enough for the fan noise to disappear beneath the sound of the projected content, including during quiet scenes.

3LCD and RGB LED: colors without the rainbow effect

The EF-62B is Epson’s first portable video projector to use the 3LCD and RGB LED combination, a duo Epson calls “Triple Core Engine.” Specifically, three 0.62-inch LCD panels each process one color component (red, green, blue) before merging the image. This process eliminates the rainbow effect that can appear on single-DLP models, and enables reproduction of up to 1.07 billion colors.

Brightness is 700 lumens (color and white, measured according to IDMS 15.4 and ISO 21118:2020 standards). This is a modest figure that requires reduced ambient light for convincing results. In broad daylight, in a well-lit room, the image will lack punch. In the evening, in a living room with dim lighting, 700 lumens are enough for an 80- to 100-inch diagonal with a good perceived contrast level. The dynamic contrast ratio is rated at over 5,000,000:1.

4K Pro UHD: simulated definition, but noticeable

An important clarification: the EF-62B is not a native 4K video projector. Its LCD panels display Full HD (1920 × 1080) natively. Epson’s 4K Pro UHD technology uses a diagonal shift of each pixel by half a pixel to double the perceived resolution. The result sits between Full HD and true 4K (3840 × 2160). The image is clearly finer than standard 1080p, with visible detail gains on textures and wide shots, but it does not compete with a projector using a native 4K chip (which, in return, costs several times more).

The EF-62B accepts 4K input signals and handles HDR10 and HLG with 10-bit video processing. Frame interpolation is available to smooth motion, and the refresh rate rises to 192-240 Hz depending on the mode. A dedicated game mode activates ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) to reduce display lag.

Built-in Bose sound: a surprising size-quality compromise

Where the EF-12 relied on Yamaha, the EF-62B turns to Bose. Two 5 W speakers, supported by passive radiators, are housed inside the unit. The system is compatible with Dolby Audio and offers four sound modes: Standard, Cinema, Music, and Dialogue.

For a device of this size, the sound is above average. Voices are clear and the midrange is well defined. Bass remains limited by the physics of the enclosure, which is predictable in such a small volume. For an evening movie in a bedroom or medium-sized living room, the built-in sound can stand on its own. For a larger space or a need for more pronounced bass, the HDMI eARC output allows connection to a soundbar, and Bluetooth 5.2 enables pairing with wireless speakers or headphones.

Note: Bluetooth also works as an input. The EF-62B can be used as a standalone Bluetooth speaker, without projection.

Google TV and Chromecast: a media center without an external box

The interface is based on Google TV, with access to Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV, and the Google Play Store catalog (more than 400,000 items according to Epson). Google Assistant is built in for voice commands. Chromecast allows streaming from a phone or tablet without going through an additional box. To control everything, the Epson Projection Studio app is available on smartphone.

The move from Android TV (on the EF-12) to Google TV brings a more structured interface, with personalized recommendations and unified navigation across apps. It’s a notable comfort upgrade for everyday use.

Nearly automatic setup

One of the EF-62B’s concrete strengths is its startup process. The video projector automatically adjusts focus, corrects keystone distortion (±20° horizontally and vertically), adapts the image to the projection surface, and detects obstacles on the wall (switch, thermostat) to reposition the image around them. In practice, you place the device, turn it on, and the image is ready within seconds. This automation is a real advantage for portable use: no need to recalibrate manually every time you change rooms.

The 1.20:1 throw ratio produces a 100-inch image at about 2.67 m from the wall. For the maximum 150-inch diagonal (3.80 m), the projector must be moved back to 4 m. The zoom is digital (×1 to ×3.33), which means enlarging beyond a factor of 1 reduces definition.

Connectivity: the essentials, without excess

The EF-62B includes an HDMI port compatible with ARC and eARC, a USB-A port, a USB-B port (reserved for maintenance), a 3.5 mm jack audio output, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2.

Just one HDMI port is not much. Connecting a game console and a soundbar via HDMI at the same time is not possible. Bluetooth or the jack output partially make up for this limitation for audio, but the choice of a single HDMI port remains a compromise tied to the compact format. The EF-12 offered two.

Power consumption and lifespan: efficient operation

The LED light source is rated for 20,000 hours of operation. At three hours of daily use, that represents more than 18 years, which is to say there will probably never be a lamp to replace.

Power consumption is 83 W in normal mode and 56 W in eco mode, clearly less than a large television. In standby, the device drops to 0.5 W. The EF-62B has TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort certification.

Where the EF-62B sits in the Lifestudio range

The Lifestudio Pop range includes three models. The EF-61W, below it, shares the same size and the same features (Bose, Google TV, 700 lumens), but is limited to native Full HD without pixel shifting. The EF-72 Lifestudio Flex, above it, keeps 4K Pro UHD and goes up to 1,000 lumens, with a more robust chassis featuring a swiveling stand and ambient lighting.

The EF-62B is the mid-range model: it offers 4K Pro UHD processing in the most compact and lightest format in the series.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the EF-62B run on battery power?

No. It requires mains power (AC 100-240 V, 50-60 Hz). There is no optional battery offered by Epson for this model. Outdoor use requires connection to the power grid or the use of a portable power station.

Can you project onto the ceiling with this video projector?

Yes. The EF-62B supports several projection modes (table, floor, ceiling), and the automatic keystone correction adapts to the angle. The ¼-inch threaded mount under the unit accepts compatible ceiling mounts.

Does game mode reduce display lag significantly?

Game mode activates ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and disables certain image processing features to reduce latency. Epson does not publish a precise input lag value for the EF-62B. This mode is suitable for casual gaming, but competitive players on fast-paced titles will want to test responsiveness before committing.
