Moving a large projection screen from a meeting room to a living room or a terrace generally means choosing between screen quality and ease of transport. Projeo’s Cross HD 80 aims for a balance between the two: an 80-inch matte white surface stretched over a foldable tripod, storable in a long, narrow box. It remains to be seen what this portable screen is worth once set up.

A tripod and an X-frame

The Cross name refers to the cross-shaped frame hidden behind the screen fabric. This scissor structure keeps the surface perfectly flat once the screen is open, and folds flat for storage. It rests on a central black lacquered aluminum alloy pole, attached to a tripod whose feet cover 64 cm on the floor.

Assembly requires no tools. You unfold the tripod, unroll the screen, and it stands upright in a few seconds. The system is entirely manual: no motor, no remote control to manage. This choice limits possible breakdowns and lightens the whole unit, at the cost of a step you have to do yourself each time you set it up.

The matte white screen fabric and its neutral gain

The projection surface is a matte white screen fabric with a gain of 1. This neutral gain means the fabric reflects light without amplifying it or concentrating it toward a specific axis. Color and contrast rendering remains faithful to what the projector sends, with no color shift or hotspot in the center of the image.

In return, a gain-1 fabric provides no brightness boost. The result therefore depends directly on the projector’s power and control of ambient light. In a dark room or in the evening, the image is sharp and uniform. In broad daylight, a bright projector and curtains are preferable.

A 170-degree viewing angle

The stated directivity reaches 170 degrees. In practical terms, the image keeps its brightness and colors even for viewers seated far from the central axis, on the sides of a meeting room or at the ends of a sofa. This is the direct consequence of the gain of 1: a screen fabric that does not concentrate light diffuses it widely. For use where the audience is not grouped directly in front of the screen, this openness matters.

80-inch format, height adjustment, and storage

The usable image area measures 176.8 × 99.8 cm, for a diagonal of 80 inches (203.2 cm) in a 16:9 format, the ratio used for films and recent video content. The screen fabric is surrounded by black borders that clearly define the image frame and reinforce the perception of contrast.

As for height, the pole offers an adjustment range of 117 cm above a fixed 6 cm base. You can adapt the image position to the audience’s eye level, whether it is a standing group or viewers seated in low armchairs.

Folded, the screen fits into packaging measuring 117 × 20 × 13.6 cm: a long, flat package that slips into a car trunk or along a wall. Projeo specifies that it must be stored horizontally to avoid any deformation of the screen fabric and frame. The warranty is 2 years.

Compatibility with long-throw projectors

The Cross HD 80 is designed for long-throw projectors, the kind placed at a distance from the screen, at the back of the room or on the ceiling. Its matte white surface diffuses the light received from the front and suits this type of conventional installation. Ultra-short-throw projectors, placed just below the screen, generally require a fabric with a specific structure to avoid reflections, which is beyond the scope of this model.

For those aiming for a larger image, Projeo offers the same design in the Cross HD 90, which increases the diagonal to 90 inches with a screen fabric measuring 199.2 × 112.1 cm. The tripod and assembly principle remain identical.
