2.5-way D’Appolito configuration
The horizontal layout creates a well-known issue for center speakers: a tweeter flanked by two woofers generates narrow directivity lobes, which degrade intelligibility as soon as the listener moves off the central axis. The 2.5-way design addresses this constraint. The tweeter crosses over at 3,000 Hz, but above all one of the two 174 mm drivers reproduces only the bass, while the other covers bass and midrange (transition at 350 Hz). Horizontal directivity becomes more consistent off axis, and dialogue remains intelligible from side seats.
Aluminum diaphragms and Wave surround
The two 174 mm drivers use a lightweight, rigid aluminum diaphragm fitted with Canton’s patented Wave surround. The surround profile features three undulations whose geometry distributes forces symmetrically during the cone’s back-and-forth movement. The practical result: greater excursion without parasitic distortion, meaning controlled bass and an intelligible midrange even at high volume. Aluminum’s rigidity contributes to precision in the upper part of the driver’s range, up to the upper crossover point handed over to the tweeter.
Aluminum-manganese dome tweeter
The 25 mm tweeter uses the aluminum-manganese alloy characteristic of Canton series. The dome and its voice-coil support are machined from a single piece, which pushes resonance higher and extends response up to 40,000 Hz. In front of the dome, the aluminum faceplate continues the waveguide function and controls the dispersion angle. The sound favors clarity on sibilants and precision of transients, qualities useful for voices and effects located at the center of the soundstage.
Rear-firing bass-reflex port
The cabinet operates in bass-reflex, but the port opens at the rear (backfire). This layout is visually more discreet and avoids chuffing phenomena on the listening axis. It does, however, impose one requirement: free space must be kept behind the speaker, otherwise the bass becomes boosted and the midrange hardens. Placed in a closed niche or pressed against a wall, the speaker loses part of its tonal balance. The stated extension down to 26 Hz remains theoretical for a center channel, but the low end of the spectrum benefits the anchoring of male voices and low-frequency effects localized at the center of the picture.
Cabinetmaking, grille, and connectivity
The cabinet is finished in natural wood veneer, with rounded vertical edges. The aluminum front grille is tension-mounted into precise slots, with no visible pegs. Inside, several braces stiffen the structure and limit parasitic vibrations. At the rear, two pairs of gold-plated binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amping, and accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire.
