Overview
Clear dialogue, voices anchored in the picture, precise effects: the center channel plays a demanding role in a home theater setup. In Canton’s Ergo range, a historic series from the German manufacturer, this 655 model adopts a horizontal 2.5-way configuration, with two 174 mm drivers flanking a dome tweeter. Here, the manufacturer applies the technical formulas it reserves for its high-end ranges, in a cabinet finished in natural wood veneer.
D’Appolito 2.5-way configuration
The horizontal layout poses a well-known problem for center speakers: a tweeter flanked by two woofers generates narrow directivity lobes, which degrade intelligibility as soon as the listener moves off the central axis. The 2.5-way design addresses this constraint. The tweeter crosses over at 3,000 Hz, but above all one of the two 174 mm drivers reproduces only the bass, while the other covers bass and midrange (transition at 350 Hz). Horizontal directivity becomes more consistent off-axis, and dialogue remains clear from side seats.
Aluminum cones and Wave surround
The two 174 mm drivers use a lightweight, rigid aluminum cone, fitted with Canton’s patented Wave surround. The surround profile features three undulations whose geometry distributes forces symmetrically during the cone’s back-and-forth movement. The practical result: greater excursion without parasitic deformation, therefore controlled bass and an intelligible midrange even at high volume. The rigidity of aluminum contributes to precision in the upper part of the driver’s range, up to the high crossover point assigned to the tweeter.
Aluminum-manganese dome tweeter
The 25 mm tweeter uses the aluminum-manganese alloy characteristic of Canton series. The dome and its voice-coil support are machined from a single piece, which pushes resonance higher and extends the response up to 40,000 Hz. In front of the dome, the aluminum faceplate extends the waveguide function and controls the dispersion angle. The sound favors clarity on sibilants and precision of transients, qualities that are useful for voices and effects located at the center of the soundstage.
Rear-firing bass-reflex port
The cabinet operates in bass-reflex, but the port opens at the rear (backfire). This layout is visually more discreet and avoids chuffing phenomena on the listening axis. It does, however, require one precaution: space must be left free behind the speaker, otherwise the bass becomes loaded and hardens the midrange. Placed in a closed niche or pressed against a wall, the speaker loses part of its tonal balance. The stated extension down to 26 Hz remains theoretical for a center channel, but the low end benefits the anchoring of male voices and low-frequency effects localized at the center of the picture.
Cabinet, grille, and connectivity
The cabinet is finished in natural wood veneer, with rounded vertical edges. The aluminum front grille is tension-mounted in precise slots, with no visible fasteners. Inside, several braces stiffen the structure and limit parasitic vibrations. At the rear, two pairs of gold-plated binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amplification, and accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. The whole measures 53 cm wide, 20.5 cm high, and 28.5 cm deep, for a weight of 13 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the speaker magnetically shielded?
Yes. The shielding allows it to be placed in the immediate vicinity of a television without any risk to the image, including on older screens that are sensitive to magnetic fields.
How much distance should be allowed between the back of the speaker and the wall?
Since the bass-reflex port is rear-firing, allow at least fifteen to twenty centimeters of clearance so the bass can breathe. The closer the wall, the more boomy and overwhelming the low end becomes.
What amplifier power should you aim for?
With a sensitivity of 87.9 dB and an impedance between 4 and 8 ohms, the speaker requires an amplifier capable of delivering current into a 4-ohm load. A power reserve of around 100 watts per channel helps handle the dynamic peaks of a soundtrack without saturation.
Can it be placed flat on a TV stand?
Yes, the base is flat and the cabinet’s rounded edges stabilize its footing. Check that the furniture depth (28.5 cm) leaves space behind the cabinet for the port.
Does it necessarily have to be paired with other Canton speakers?
No technical requirement, but tonal consistency greatly affects the clarity of pans. A center channel that is very different from the front speakers makes the movement of a voice from one speaker to another perceptible. Matching with other Ergo models or with a neighboring Canton range ensures this continuity.
Is the front grille removable?
Yes. It can be removed by pulling firmly on its edges. The fit is intentionally snug to prevent unwanted vibrations, so the operation requires a bit of firmness but poses no risk to the grille or the driver diaphragm.
