TCL 85X11L 2026
Overview
While most manufacturers are betting on RGB Mini LED backlighting for their 2026 generation, TCL is taking the opposite approach with an 85-inch panel that pushes classic Mini LED to its limits. Ten thousand nits of peak brightness, 14,400 dimming zones, and full BT.2020 gamut coverage: the top of the brand’s TV range succeeds the X11K with figures that bring it closer to OLED territory.
A different path from RGB Mini LED
The 85X11L introduces TCL’s eighth-generation Mini LED backlighting, called SQD-Mini LED for Super Quantum Dots Mini LED. While part of the industry is betting on RGB Mini LED and its triplets of red, green, and blue diodes, TCL retains miniaturized blue diodes and entrusts color generation to a new quantum dot formulation paired with an UltraColor filter developed by its subsidiary CSOT.
This technical choice has a concrete consequence. RGB Mini LED can produce color leakage between neighboring subpixels, a flaw that TCL refers to as “color crosstalk.” By separating the pure white light source and color filtering, the 85X11L aims for stable saturation regardless of the scene displayed. With the same number of diodes, this method also allows for more independent dimming zones.
10,000 nits and 14,400 dimming zones
A dimming zone corresponds to a group of diodes that the TV turns off or on independently from the rest of the panel. The more there are, the finer the contrast control. The 85X11L has 14,400 of them. The generational leap lies less in this total, close to that of the X11K, than in the backlight control: the controller goes from 23 to 26 bits, meaning a significantly higher number of brightness steps.
Peak brightness rises to 10,000 nits, whereas the X11K topped out at around 6,500. This brightness headroom mainly benefits HDR content and visibility in bright rooms, with the UltraColor anti-reflective filter limiting stray reflections. One limitation remains, inherent to any LCD panel: even with 14,400 zones and the Halo Control system, the backlight does not reach the level of absolute black of an OLED, whose pixels each switch off individually. The light halo around bright objects on a dark background is greatly reduced, but not completely eliminated.
Covering the entire BT.2020 gamut
BT.2020 is the reference color space for Ultra HD, wider than the DCI-P3 used in digital cinema. The best current Mini LED panels cover around 83% of it, while QD-OLEDs are around 90%. TCL claims full coverage, or 100%, which would be a first for this type of backlighting. The figure comes from the manufacturer’s laboratories and requires confirmation by independent measurements, but the claimed gap remains notable.
The panel processes color in 10 bits, namely 8 native bits supplemented by FRC dithering. On the HDR side, the 85X11L supports HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision IQ, which adjusts the picture to ambient light, and IMAX Enhanced certification. TCL announces the addition of Dolby Vision 2 via update during summer 2026.
Four HDMI 2.1 ports and 288 Hz gaming
A first for a TCL TV: all four HDMI ports are version 2.1, all capable of 4K at 144 Hz. No more having to choose between sources: a PS5, an Xbox Series X, and a PC can all stay connected permanently without having to pick the right port. The panel is natively 144 Hz, with VRR to synchronize display with the source frame rate and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification against tearing.
For PC gamers who exceed 144 frames per second, DLG processing, for Dual Line Gate, pushes the frequency to 288 Hz at 1080p resolution. ALLM mode automatically switches to low latency as soon as a gaming signal is detected, and the Game Bar toolbar brings together the dedicated settings.
Sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen
The audio tuning is by Bang & Olufsen, in a 2.0 configuration with two speakers for a total of 20 watts. The system supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, with several sound modes depending on the content: movie, music, voice, game, sport, night, or a custom profile. The result gains in clarity and dialogue consistency compared with the generic speakers of many TVs.
Power remains modest for a panel of this size. The 2.0 format reproduces Dolby Atmos spatial sound through processing, without dedicated height channels. To fully take advantage of Atmos tracks on an 85-inch TV, a soundbar or separate system still makes perfect sense.
Two centimeters thick on the wall
At its thinnest point, the chassis measures two centimeters. The back is flat, allowing for near-flush wall mounting with VESA 600 × 400 mounting. The panel uses nearly all of its surface for the picture, surrounded by a thin metal frame that TCL calls Virtually ZeroBorder, included to stiffen the whole assembly.
Placed on furniture, the 85X11L stands on a central base, practical when the support is narrower than the screen. Allow for a width of 1.88 meters and about 52 kg with the stand: handling and installing a screen of this size requires two people.
Google TV, Gemini, and connectivity
The 85X11L runs on Google TV, with 64 GB of storage and a built-in microphone for hands-free assistant use. TCL highlights the integration of Gemini, Google’s AI, for searches and voice commands. Screen sharing works via Chromecast and AirPlay 2, wireless connection via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The tuner handles terrestrial TV, cable, and satellite. The USB port reads files up to 4K at 60 Hz, records programs, and offers the TimeShift function to pause live TV. Image processing is handled by the AiPQ Pro processor, which manages upscaling of lower-resolution content, color correction, and motion smoothing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What sizes make up the X11L series?
The range is available in 75, 85, and 98 inches. The 85- and 98-inch models reach a peak brightness of 10,000 nits, while the 75-inch model tops out at 9,000. The number of dimming zones also varies by screen size: 11,520 on the 75-inch, 14,400 on the 85-inch, and 20,736 on the 98-inch.
What’s the difference compared with TCL’s RM9L?
The 85X11L uses SQD-Mini LED, based on blue diodes, quantum dots, and an UltraColor filter. The RM9L relies on RGB Mini LED backlighting, with triplets of red, green, and blue diodes. Both share the same UltraColor filter and a similar positioning, with the X11L being the highest-positioned model in the 2026 range.
Is a wall mount included in the box?
No. The box contains the RC933 remote control with two AAA batteries, the power cord, and the documentation. Wall mounting uses the VESA 600 × 400 standard, with a mount to be purchased separately. For placement on furniture, the central stand is included as standard.
How far back should you sit for an 85-inch screen?
With a 4K panel of this size, a viewing distance of 2 to 3.5 meters is suitable for most living rooms. Ultra HD resolution allows you to sit closer than with an older Full HD screen without seeing the pixel structure, which makes this size workable in a medium-depth room.
Does Gemini replace Google Assistant?
The built-in microphone provides access to Google hands-free voice commands. TCL announces the integration of Gemini for search and natural language interaction, in addition to the classic functions of the Google ecosystem. Basic uses, such as launching an application or searching for content by voice, remain available.
How do I connect a soundbar to the 85X11L?
One of the HDMI ports supports eARC, the enhanced audio return channel that transmits Dolby Atmos and DTS:X tracks to a compatible soundbar or amplifier. HDMI CEC lets you control the volume with a single remote. Bluetooth 5.4 remains an option for wireless headphones.
