PMC P1 Stand: the dedicated stand for Prodigy 1 and Prophecy 1

Placing a bookshelf speaker on furniture or a shelf means accepting that it will deliver less than it is capable of: approximate listening height, a surface that resonates, bass that loses control. PMC equips its two compact speakers, the Prodigy 1 and the Prophecy 1, with a high-mass steel stand, set at the right ear height and heavy enough not to budge under the speaker’s weight.

A dual-column steel structure

Each stand rests on two large-diameter columns and a 4 mm steel base plate, with the PMC logo laser-cut into it. Here, mass matters as much as rigidity. The heavier and more inert the support, the less it is driven by the energy returned by the speaker: that energy flows to the floor instead of returning into the cabinet as micro-movements. The driver then operates on a base that does not give way. The finely textured black finish discreetly disappears beneath the speaker.

A constrained-layer damping top plate

The top plate is not a simple steel platform. It encloses a layer of viscoelastic polymer between two rigid surfaces: when vibration passes through the assembly, this layer shears it and dissipates it as heat rather than allowing it to resonate. This is the principle of constrained-layer damping. Controlling this vibrational energy preserves detail and low-level information. The soundstage becomes more focused, while bass is better controlled and gains definition.

Columns to ballast according to the room

The columns are hollow, intentionally: they can be filled. Ballasting is an adjustment left to each listener’s ear. Depending on the speaker placed on top, the room acoustics and the desired result, you can adjust the stand’s mass and therefore its behaviour. Allow approximately one litre of dry sand per column, or a specialised ballast material readily available commercially. The sand must be dry to prevent any moisture from coming into contact with the steel, and it is not supplied: you will need to provide it yourself.

Decouple the speaker, couple to the floor

The stand treats its two ends differently. At the top, four isolation pads sit between the speaker and the plate: they decouple the cabinet from the support and protect it from micro-vibrations. At the bottom, four adjustable M8 spikes do the opposite, providing firm coupling to the floor along with precise levelling, useful when the floor is not perfectly flat.

Height, assembly and compatibility

The column measures 600 mm, a height chosen to bring the tweeter of the Prodigy 1 and Prophecy 1 to ear level in a seated position. Without the spikes, the stand reaches 608 mm; once the spikes are extended, it approaches 634 mm. The base is 220 mm wide by 270 mm deep, and the pair weighs 16 kg on delivery, before any ballasting.

The stand arrives as a kit: two top plates, two base plates, four columns, flat-head and domed-head screws, eight isolation pads, eight spikes with their nuts, eight spike covers, and 4 and 5 mm Allen keys. Everything is in the box for assembly, levelling and, if desired, ballasting. The top plate and pads are designed for PMC’s two compact speakers, the entry-level Prodigy 1 and the higher-end Prophecy 1. Another bookshelf speaker of similar dimensions may physically fit on it, but the interface remains tailored to these two models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this stand compatible with speakers other than the PMC Prodigy 1 and Prophecy 1?

The top platform and the four isolation feet are designed to match the dimensions and footprint of these two models. A bookshelf speaker of similar size and weight may physically fit on the platform, but the positioning of the feet and the overall balance have been tuned for the Prodigy 1 and Prophecy 1; results are guaranteed with these models.

Is it mandatory to fill in the columns?

No. The stand works with empty columns. Filling is an optional adjustment that adds mass and lowers the structure’s resonance point. You can start with it empty, listen, then add ballast if you are looking for more controlled bass or a heavier foundation.

What material should be used for ballast, and in what quantity?

Approximately one litre of dry sand per column, or a specialised ballast material sold for this purpose. Dry sand is preferable to eliminate any risk of moisture coming into contact with the steel. This material is not supplied with the stand.

Will the spikes mark my parquet floor?

Eight spike caps are supplied to protect hard floors such as parquet or tile. On carpet, remove the caps so that the spikes pass through the fibres and rest on the subfloor. The M8 spikes can be adjusted individually to compensate for a floor that is not perfectly level.

Is the weight difference between the Prodigy 1 and the Prophecy 1 a problem?

No, the stand accommodates both. The Prophecy 1, which is heavier and features an aluminum cast base, has a lower center of gravity than the lighter Prodigy 1. In both cases, the weight of the stand and the four isolation pads provide the same stability, with the same hardware and installation.

Does assembly require any special tools?

No, everything is included. The stand arrives flat-packed, with its flat-head and domed-head screws and the 4 and 5 mm Allen keys needed for assembly. Simply stack the base, columns and top plate, screw them together, then level it using the spikes once the speaker is in place.
