Overview
The Aventho Y headphones come with memory foam ear pads covered in faux leather. They provide good isolation but retain heat during long listening sessions. Beyerdynamic offers a pair of velour ear pads as an accessory, the material it has used on its studio headphones for decades. They attach magnetically in place of the original ear pads, changing the feel, the warmth against the skin and the look of the headphones.
Studio headphone velour on portable headphones
At Beyerdynamic, velour is associated with the studio models the brand calls its “Studio Legends”, those headphones with round ear cups and grey ear pads that have been seen in recording booths since the 1980s. The Aventho Y already features this round shape. With the velour ear pads, it also adopts their material and takes on a retro look that the original ear pads do not provide.
Velour is soft and breathable. Air circulates through it more easily than through faux leather, so the skin around the ear gets less warm and sweaty. This is especially noticeable during long sessions: a day working from home, a long train journey or an evening of gaming, with the headphones on for hours.
A magnetic attachment that can be changed in seconds
The Aventho Y’s ear pads do not clip or stick into place. They are held on by magnets. To remove them, simply pull gently on the ear pad. To fit the new one, hold it up to the ear cup and the magnets position it automatically. This design is one of the choices that make the Aventho Y easy to maintain. Parts that wear out over time (ear pads, battery) can be replaced without tools and without sending the headphones back for servicing.
Changing ear pads then becomes a matter of mood or season. It is no longer a repair. There is nothing to stop you keeping the faux leather pair for travel and switching to velour at home, in just a few seconds each time.
Velour or faux leather: comfort, isolation and bass
The choice of ear pad material always involves a trade-off, and velour is no exception. Since it lets a little air through, it seals the space around the ear less tightly than faux leather. As a general rule, this slightly reduces passive isolation from external noise and can make the bass a little less pronounced, since the bass of closed-back headphones depends in part on the seal around the ear. The Aventho Y’s active noise cancellation continues to work normally and compensates for much of this difference on public transport. If the bass seems a little less present, the equaliser in the Beyerdynamic app lets you rebalance it.
When worn, the feel against the skin is drier and softer. Faux leather feels smoother and a little cooler for the first few minutes, but it sticks more to the skin in hot weather.
Two colours to pair with the headphones’ four shades
The velour ear pads are available in grey and black. Grey is directly reminiscent of the brand’s studio headphones and stands out against the Aventho Y’s bright shades: it creates a clear contrast with Blue Fusion or Peach Blush, and is more discreet on Soft Jade. Black works with every colour and gives Liquid Black an entirely dark, uniform appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Are these ear pads compatible with the Aventho 100, 200 or 300?
No. They are designed exclusively for the Aventho Y, whose round earcups and magnetic attachment system they fit. Other Aventho models have a different earcup shape and attachment system.
Are the ear pads sold individually or in pairs?
They are sold in pairs, one ear pad for each earcup, in the selected color.
Are the velour ear pads thicker than the original ones?
They have the same shape and attach in the same way, so the headphones retain their dimensions and fold up as before. The surface feels softer to the touch because of the fabric.
Does removing an ear pad give access to the battery?
Yes, on the left side. The Aventho Y’s replaceable battery is located in the left earcup, in a small hinged compartment beneath the magnetic ear cushion. Changing the ear cushions is therefore also when you can access the battery, with no further disassembly.
How do you care for velour ear pads?
Velour attracts dust, hair and lint. A soft-bristled brush or lint roller is enough to keep it clean day to day. Since the ear pads detach with a simple pull, they can be cleaned separately from the headphones, without risking getting the electronics wet.
Can you frequently switch between velour and faux leather without damaging the attachment?
Yes. The magnetic attachment does not rely on any tabs or clips that could wear out or break. You can change the ear pads as often as you like.
Do velour ear pads affect how the microphones or controls work?
No. The call microphones, controls, and noise cancellation are in the headphone earcups, not in the ear pads. Only the feel, passive isolation, and bass balance may change slightly, as with any change in ear pad material.
