The Accuphase E-280 features the brand’s iconic front panel, crafted from a thick block of anodized aluminum with a subtle golden hue. This neo-retro design is distinguished by its two imposing analog VU meters and large input selection and volume control knobs. The front panel also includes numerous buttons and controls, providing direct access to features without the need for a sliding panel. This approach allows for intuitive control of bass and treble equalization, phono preamp mode selection, right/left balance, mono or stereo mode, speaker output configuration, and display.

The rear panel of the E-280 offers generous and varied connectivity. It includes 5 RCA line inputs, a balanced input with dual 3-pin XLR, an RCA REC input and output, a preamplified RCA output, and a preamp input for using only the power stage. Four pairs of binding posts allow for connecting up to two pairs of stereo speakers, with the option to operate in bi-amplified mode. A major advantage lies in the two slots for optional cards, allowing the addition of a digital-to-analog conversion module (DAC-50) or a phono preamplification card (AD-50), providing appreciable flexibility and scalability.

The E-280 follows in the footsteps of Accuphase’s high-end operational amplifiers. Its power supply is based on a large single transformer, supported by two 30,000 µF filter capacitors. The power amplification adopts a dual-mono topology, separating the left and right channels on individual boards from the power circuits. The parallel push-pull bipolar transistor configuration allows for operation similar to a measurement amplifier, particularly suited to low input signals and offering remarkably low background noise. Accuphase claims a 12% reduction in background noise compared to the previous model, the E-270.

AAVA Volume Control: A Major Innovation

The E-280 incorporates the AAVA (Accuphase Analog Vari-gain Amplifier) volume controller developed by the brand. This revolutionary technology does not use resistor ladders but a combination of 16 voltage-current (V-I) converters. This system significantly reduces distortion, increases the signal-to-noise ratio, and improves channel separation. Unlike conventional volume controls, AAVA does not introduce impedance changes, ensuring a perfectly uniform frequency response regardless of the selected volume level. This technology also ensures very fine volume adjustment and maintains the balance between the left and right channels.

Capable of delivering a maximum power of 120 W per channel at 4 Ω or 90 W at 8 ohms, the E-280 offers moderate but ample power to drive most speakers on the market.
