The FiiO M17 takes a hybrid approach by combining the functions of a portable player and a desktop system. Weighing 610 grams, it features a meticulously designed technical architecture and an external power mode that enables performance comparable to dedicated amplifiers.
The M17 is built on a remarkable technical design with 17 separate printed circuit boards, an approach that perfectly isolates the analog and digital sections. This complex architecture integrates two reference ESS ES9038PRO DACs, each dedicated to one channel, offering 8 parallel outputs per channel for maximum resolution and minimal distortion.
Amplification relies on THX AAA-788+ technology, developed specifically by FiiO in collaboration with THX. This solution delivers an exceptional power output of 3000mW per channel at 32Ω in balanced mode, which is 225% more than previous generations. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor ensures flawless performance on Android 10, a first for a FiiO player.
The active cooling system with a built-in fan reflects the device’s “desktop” ambitions, though the fan can be audible under certain conditions. NDK femtosecond crystal oscillators guarantee exceptional timing accuracy, a crucial element for detailed music reproduction.
Tests confirm a sound signature of remarkable transparency, with dynamics that rival the best desktop systems. The soundstage stands out for its width and airiness, allowing precise instrument placement and exemplary separation of sound layers.
The bass impresses with its control and extension, always remaining tight even in the most demanding passages. The midrange reveals striking harmonic richness, rendering vocals with astonishing naturalness. The treble extends very high without ever becoming harsh, maintaining both precision and lightness.
The external DC power mode literally transforms the device’s performance. This unique feature enables access to the “super headphone” mode, unlocking higher voltage and current for control and dynamics worthy of a dedicated desktop amplifier. This versatility allows effortless driving of demanding headphones such as high-impedance planars.
The M17 excels in versatility thanks to its multiple operating modes. It can serve as a USB DAC for computers, a high-quality Bluetooth receiver, or a digital transport via its coaxial output. This flexibility makes it a central audio hub capable of adapting to different listening environments.
The comprehensive connectivity offers five different headphone outputs: 3.5mm and 6.35mm unbalanced jacks, 2.5mm and 4.4mm balanced outputs, plus a dedicated line out. This wealth of connections allows for optimal impedance matching depending on the headphones used.
Bluetooth 5.0 integration with support for high-quality codecs (LDAC, aptX HD, LHDC) and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity provide access to streaming services and Roon Ready compatibility. The 5.99-inch Full HD+ touchscreen ensures smooth and enjoyable navigation.
The M17 fully embraces its “desktop player” status with its substantial dimensions and 610-gram weight. The CNC-machined aluminum chassis demonstrates exemplary craftsmanship, while the large touchscreen makes navigation easy.
Ergonomics favor stationary use with an included ventilated stand and a genuine leather case for occasional travel. The analog volume potentiometer offers precise adjustment, complemented by both touch and physical controls.
Active thermal management becomes necessary given the power output, but the fan can generate noticeable noise in quiet environments. This technical constraint illustrates the trade-off between performance and discretion.
The M17 occupies a unique segment: high-performance players capable of rivaling desktop systems. Compared to the iBasso DX320 or Cayin N8ii, it stands out with its superior amplification power and complete Android ecosystem.
Compared to the previous M15, the evolution is spectacular, with significant gains in dynamics, transparency, and power. This progress justifies the premium price point and the focus on the most demanding audiophiles.
Direct competition remains limited in this specific niche, with few manufacturers daring to offer players of such power and size. This uniqueness is both a competitive advantage and a limitation in terms of potential market.
Battery life varies significantly depending on the mode: about 10 hours in unbalanced output with medium-sensitivity headphones, and 8 hours in balanced mode. Using DC mode eliminates this constraint when operating on mains power.
In DC mode, the M17 delivers performance comparable to many desktop amplifiers, especially for medium-impedance headphones. Only the most demanding headphones, such as the HEDDphone, will still require dedicated external amplification.
The fan activates automatically based on internal temperature and is generally silent during normal listening. It becomes audible during prolonged intensive use but remains acceptable in most listening environments.
DC mode unlocks the “super headphone mode,” which significantly increases available voltage and current, improving control, dynamics, and the ability to drive difficult loads. This difference is especially noticeable with planar headphones.
Absolutely, the exemplary noise floor and multiple gain settings allow perfect adaptation to sensitive earphones. The low-gain mode ensures silent operation even with the most sensitive drivers.
The 5.99-inch Full HD+ screen offers excellent readability and touch responsiveness. The Android 10 interface runs smoothly, comparable to a high-end smartphone, with access to the Play Store and streaming apps.
LDAC and aptX HD codecs noticeably improve wireless transmission quality, especially with revealing headphones. However, the difference is still perceptible compared to a direct wired connection.

I’ve had this FiiO M17 for 15 days and I’m more than satisfied. After a good “burn-in” period (over 20 hours), it becomes excellent and, in my case, when connected to a MEZE EMPYREAN II with a balanced silver-plated cable, everything sounds exceptionally refined and extremely precise, with good placement in the soundstage. You rediscover recordings, with instruments becoming very present that you could barely hear before.
I’ve also owned a FiiO M11 Pro for 4 years, which is very good too, but with the FiiO M17 you really step up to a clearly superior performance!
However, given the M17’s weight and size, it won’t be easy to take it out for a “walk,” so that’s why I’m keeping my M11 Pro, which does fit in a pocket.
In my opinion, this FiiO M17 paired with a quality headphone will be an excellent investment that no audiophile will regret.
That said, be careful with the volume settings, because its amps are very powerful—the guarantee of excellent musical reproduction.
