Overview
With its 17.7 cm diameter format and 7.5 cm mounting depth, this in-ceiling speaker echoes the visual codes of recessed spotlights. The 909 series to which it belongs represents the top end of Canton’s in-ceiling range, with a distinctive feature: all the drivers, both tweeter and mid-bass, use ceramic diaphragms. This is a technical choice the German manufacturer usually reserves for its reference loudspeakers.
A ceramic diaphragm from bass to treble
The Inceiling 949’s 2-way system is based on two ceramic-cone drivers. The 135 mm mid-bass covers the spectrum up to 3,000 Hz, where a 25 mm ceramic tweeter takes over. This consistency of material across the entire sound spectrum is designed to deliver a homogeneous reproduction, with no timbre discontinuity between frequency ranges.
The stated frequency response extends from 50 Hz to 40,000 Hz. While deep bass is not the primary goal of a speaker of this size (adding a subwoofer is still recommended for home theater systems), the extended high-frequency range shows that the tweeter is capable of reproducing harmonics beyond the audible spectrum.
A pivoting tweeter to fine-tune directivity
The tweeter can be pivoted to direct the treble towards the listening area. This feature comes into its own when the speaker cannot be installed directly above the listeners. A level adjustment potentiometer allows you to compensate for treble attenuation or emphasis depending on the room’s acoustics and the installation position.
With a sensitivity of 86.5 dB (measured at 2.83 V/1 m), the Inceiling 949 sits at the lower end of the sensitivity scale for in-ceiling speakers. An amplifier delivering a decent amount of power will be preferable to an entry-level model to fully exploit its capabilities. The rated power handling is 50 W, with peaks up to 100 W.
Installation and ceiling integration
Installation requires a ceiling with a maximum thickness of 4 cm, which corresponds to standard plasterboard (single or double BA13). A cutting template is supplied for making a 15 cm circular cut-out in the ceiling. The mounting system uses fold-out clamps that grip the board from behind once the speaker is inserted.
The frameless metal grille attaches magnetically and can be painted to blend into the ceiling. The “Easy-Link” connections simplify speaker cable hookup: these are quick-clamp terminals, more convenient than spade connectors or conventional stripping when working overhead.
Combination with other models in the range
Canton offers three in-wall/in-ceiling series (400, 800 and 900) with identical cut-out dimensions. You can mix models depending on the room: 949s in the living room for critical listening, 849s or 449s in passage areas where sonic demands are lower. This dimensional compatibility simplifies multiroom projects where you want a uniform visual result without necessarily investing the same budget in every room.
The Inceiling 949 is also available in a 16-ohm version (model 949-16) for 70/100 V installations used in professional sound reinforcement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Inceiling 949 be used as a Dolby Atmos speaker?
Yes, the size and sound quality of this speaker make it suitable for use as a height effects channel in an Atmos or DTS:X system. Its pivoting tweeter allows you to direct the treble towards the main listening area.
Is the speaker sold individually or as a pair?
Canton sells the Inceiling 949 individually. This approach lets you buy exactly the number of speakers needed for your setup, whether it’s a stereo system, a 5.1 system, or a multiroom configuration.
Which speaker cable should I use?
A cable with a 1.5 mm² cross-section is suitable for lengths up to 10–15 meters. Beyond that, a 2.5 mm² cross-section is preferable to limit losses. The Easy-Link terminals accept bare conductors or crimped ferrules.
Can the Inceiling 949 work with a multiroom system like Sonos or HEOS?
Yes, as long as you use a compatible amplifier (Sonos Amp, HEOS Amp, or any amplifier connected to a multiroom source). The speaker is passive and requires external amplification.
Is there an outdoor version?
No, the Inceiling 949 is designed for indoor use. Canton offers the Inceiling 969 Outdoor model for covered outdoor installations, with a stainless steel grille and splash protection.
Is the CFB Flex Bracket mentioned by Canton essential?
No, it is an optional accessory intended for new builds. This bracket allows you to pre-position the speaker’s location during structural work, before the ceiling is installed. For installation in an existing ceiling, the integrated mounting clamps are sufficient.
