Canton Inceiling 865 DT

A single speaker, two channels. The concept behind the Inceiling 865 DT is based on a simple idea: deliver stereo sound from a single ceiling mounting point. This approach, which Canton describes as a “Single-Stereo-System,” addresses a common constraint in rooms where space or layout does not allow the installation of two separate speakers. Bathrooms, narrow hallways, kitchens: all places where the 865 DT naturally comes into its own.

One shared woofer, two independent tweeters

The technical principle is straightforward: a 165 mm aluminium midbass driver handles both channels simultaneously, while two 25 mm tweeters (also aluminium) each handle one channel, left and right. This hybrid configuration involves a compromise: low frequencies remain monophonic. Stereo separation only occurs in the upper part of the spectrum, where directivity matters most for spatial perception.

The two tweeters are mounted on pivots. This mobility allows them to be aimed at different listening areas, widening sound coverage or, conversely, focusing the stereo image on a specific point. A switch accessible on the frame allows the treble level to be adjusted in three positions, useful for compensating for the sometimes tricky acoustics of tiled rooms or low ceilings.

Wiring and integration: two possible approaches

The Inceiling 865 DT features gold-plated “Easy-Link” terminals with four separate connection points (two positive, two negative) for connecting the amplifier’s left and right channels. This native configuration assumes star-wiring from the amp, which can complicate installation in cases where only a single cable reaches the ceiling.

There is an alternative: bridging the two tweeters to obtain mono operation with extended dispersion. This option is suitable for multiroom installations where sonic consistency takes priority over stereo separation. Power handling remains identical in both configurations, i.e. 60 watts continuous and 120 watts peak per channel.

Dimensions and installation constraints

The circular frame measures 24.5 cm in outside diameter. The required cut-out in the ceiling is 20.4 cm, with an installation depth of 9 cm. These dimensions limit installation to suspended ceilings with at least 10 cm plenum space. The maximum ceiling thickness supported by the mounting clamps is 4 cm.

The metal grille, held in place by magnets, can be removed without tools. It can be painted to match the ceiling finish. An installer’s tip: remove the entire driver-and-frame assembly from the mounting ring before painting to avoid overspray on the cones.

Frequency response and acoustic behavior

The stated frequency range extends from 45 Hz to 40 kHz, with a crossover point between low and high frequencies set at 3,000 Hz. The sensitivity of 87.5 dB (2.83 V/1 m) puts this speaker in the average range for in-ceiling models in its category. With no rear acoustic enclosure (the Inceiling 865 DT operates in “free air”), bass performance depends largely on the plenum volume and surrounding materials. A standard drywall suspended ceiling will offer less reinforcement than a rigid structure.
