Audeze MM-520 Manny Marroquin
Overview
Translating a mix means making it sound right everywhere: on studio monitor speakers, in a car, through headphones, on entry-level earbuds. That obsession has driven the Manny Marroquin Signature Series from Audeze since the MM-500. The MM-520 carries over its planar magnetic driver and adds an air pressure management system called SLAM, designed to tighten the low end without compromising the midrange neutrality that has made the series’ reputation.
Inside the earcups, the planar driver
Each earcup houses a 90 mm planar magnetic driver. The principle differs from a conventional dynamic speaker: instead of a voice coil attached to a cone, an ultra-thin membrane stretched across its entire surface is set in motion by a uniformly distributed magnetic field. Audeze suspends this Uniforce membrane between a single-sided Fluxor magnet array (fourteen N50 neodymium magnets) and applies its Fazor phase management to discipline the waves at the driver’s output.
The result comes down to a few figures: harmonic distortion below 0.1% at 100 dB SPL, a stated frequency response of 5 Hz to 50 kHz, and a maximum output level exceeding 130 dB SPL. Plenty of headroom when a mix gets dense, and a clear read of subtle EQ or compression moves. All in an open-back, circumaural design with a robust metal build made for daily studio use.
SLAM, or air pressure under control
SLAM, standing for Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator, is the main addition over the MM-500. Behind the acronym lies work on the air pressure inside the earcup: remove the ear pads and you’ll find two generously sized vents on either side of the ring surrounding the driver. These openings regulate airflow and reinforce the lower end of the spectrum, below 100 Hz, without introducing the distortion or resonance sometimes associated with closed-back earcups.
Open-back headphones typically trade a little weight in the low end for breadth and clarity in the midrange. SLAM aims to close that gap. The bass reaches lower and gains in control, with a more physical impact, yet remains readable enough to judge the weight of a kick, the density of a bass line, or the space around those elements. The signature isn’t inflated to flatter — it remains a decision-making tool. Audeze first introduced SLAM on its electrostatic CRBN2 before rolling it out to other models such as the LCD-5s and the Maxwell 2 gaming headset. The MM-520 is the first in the Marroquin series to benefit from it.
A sound that holds up from one system to the next
The whole point of a reference headphone lies in its ability to translate. A decision made on the MM-520 should carry over to other playback systems — otherwise monitoring serves no purpose. The tuning therefore targets neutral, linear mids where a vocal finds its place without being pushed forward or pulled back, and a controlled low end that locks kick and bass in place without letting them swell. The speed of the planar driver aids detailed editing: reverb and delay tails are easy to locate in the stereo field.
This approach comes with a trade-off. Such a neutral tuning sounds less spectacular than a consumer headphone aimed at pleasurable listening, where bass and treble are often boosted. That is precisely what you expect from a work tool: it shows the mix as it is, not as you’d like it to sound. The MM-520 is revealing enough for attentive listening outside the studio, but its primary purpose is monitoring.
Easy to drive, even without a dedicated amplifier
Many high-end planar headphones demand a powerful amplifier. The MM-520 is more accommodating: at 18 Ω impedance and 102 dB/mW sensitivity, it reaches a comfortable listening level from an audio interface, a console, a laptop, or a portable DAC-amp. The recommended minimum power exceeds 100 mW, and the driver can handle up to 5 W RMS at peak.
This ease of driving doesn’t excuse a poor source: a noisy or weak headphone output will be audible through such a revealing driver. What it does do is broaden the range of use cases, whether at a workstation or during an off-site session when you need to check a mix away from the control room. The included cable measures 2.5 m and comes with a 3.5 to 6.35 mm jack adapter. A hard case and a soft pouch from the MM series round out the package for transport.
Magnetic ear pads and long-term comfort
Long mixing days have their demands. The MM-520 features breathable memory foam ear pads, revised compared to the MM-500, and an adjustable headband that distributes pressure over time. The ear pad attachment is magnetic: removing them for cleaning or replacement takes a few seconds, with no tools required.
Weight remains a factor. At 555 g, the headphone makes itself known after several hours — the price of a 90 mm planar driver and a metal build. The open-back design, however, opens up the presentation and reduces the sense of confinement during long sessions, though it provides no isolation whatsoever: sound passes freely in and out. Worth knowing before taking it into a shared space or an occupied booth.

Frequently asked questions
Does the MM-520 replace the MM-500 in the range?
Yes. It leads the Manny Marroquin series, above the more affordable MM-100, and succeeds the MM-500, whose driver it retains. The key difference lies in SLAM and the revised ear pads; the rest of the formula—a 90 mm planar driver and neutral tuning—remains in the same lineage.
Can it be used for listening to music, not just mixing?
Nothing prevents it, and its speed and clarity make attentive listening rewarding. You simply need to keep its character in mind: a studio tuning remains honest rather than flattering. Those seeking generous bass and sparkling treble for relaxed listening may sometimes prefer a more colored pair of headphones; those who want to hear a recording as it was produced will find what they are looking for.
What power source is needed to power it properly?
Its low impedance (18 Ω) and high sensitivity make it easy to drive: a decent audio interface, laptop, or small portable DAC/amp can already reach sufficient volume without difficulty. A dedicated amplifier is not mandatory, but a clean, quiet headphone output better showcases such a revealing driver. Here, source quality matters more than raw power.
Are the ear pads easy to replace?
Yes, this is one of the headset’s practical features. The ear pads attach magnetically: simply pull them off to clean or replace them, with no disassembly or tools required. Replacement memory foam ear pads are available from Audeze.
Is the cable detachable and replaceable?
Yes, the cable is detachable from the headphones, allowing it to be replaced if it wears out or swapped for a different length. The included model is 2.5 m long and comes with a 3.5 to 6.35 mm jack adapter, so it can be connected to both a headphone amplifier and an interface.
Does its open design cause problems when recording with headphones?
For monitoring or foldback during an overdub, the open-back design is not an issue and even provides a more natural listening experience. On the other hand, open-back headphones leak sound: in front of a sensitive microphone, for example during vocal recording, this leakage can end up in the recording. In this specific case, closed-back headphones remain safer. The MM-520 is primarily intended for mixing and monitoring.
