Philips 48OLED811

Large living rooms no longer have a monopoly on OLED. In 48 inches, Philips’ Series 8 moves to its 2026 model year and inherits the brand’s most advanced in-house processor, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and an OLED EX panel that is brighter than last year. Ambilight, the brand’s signature feature, is still included, as is a 70-watt 2.2 audio system housed in the chassis.

The most compact in the OLED range

The 48OLED811 measures 48 inches, or 121 cm diagonally. It is the smallest of the five sizes in Philips’ Series 8, which goes up to 77 inches. This size fits into a bedroom, office or living room where a 55-inch or larger model would become cumbersome.

The black metal frame is very thin on all four sides. The TV stands on a central swivel base called “Circle Cut,” with a satin chrome finish, allowing the screen to be turned toward the sofa or dining table without moving the furniture. Cable routing is integrated into the stand to limit clutter at the rear. Without its stand, the chassis is only 47 mm thick and weighs 13.55 kg. A VESA 300 × 300 mm wall mount is provided for those who prefer to hang it.

A brighter OLED EX panel

OLED is based on a simple principle: each pixel produces its own light and switches off completely to display black. No backlighting means no halo around bright objects against a dark background, and immeasurable contrast. Credits on a black background, a night scene or a starry sky gain a depth that a backlit screen struggles to reproduce.

The panel is a new-generation OLED EX. Compared with that of the previous Series 8, it gains peak brightness, which helps with a film’s HDR highlights and in a room lit during the day. OLED still performs best in controlled lighting rather than in front of a sun-drenched bay window, but the gap has narrowed. Resolution reaches 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, i.e. Ultra HD 4K, on a 10-bit panel capable of a wide color gamut.

The P5 processor and Dolby Vision 2 Max

The 48OLED811 features Philips’ most advanced image processor, the tenth-generation P5 AI, based on the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip. It is the same processing foundation as the brand’s top-tier models, a rare point for a mid-range series.

This processor drives Dolby Vision 2 Max, the latest version of Dolby’s HDR format. More specifically, an image engine analyzes content frame by frame and adapts rendering to the room: the Precision Black function refines blacks, while Light Sense takes into account ambient light measured by the TV. The rendering aims for an image faithful to the director’s intent, by day and by night. Other widespread HDR formats are supported: HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. For adjustments, the TV is compatible with Calman AutoCal calibration and offers detailed manual settings, with Reference and Monitor modes based as closely as possible on video standards.

Four HDMI 2.1 ports for gamers

The most tangible change compared with last year’s Series 8 concerns gaming connectivity. All four HDMI inputs are now HDMI 2.1 with the full 48 Gbit/s bandwidth, whereas the previous model had only two. A latest-generation console, gaming PC and soundbar can therefore coexist without having to reconnect cables.

The TV displays up to 165 Hz in 4K, with VRR (variable refresh rate, which eliminates screen tearing) active on all four ports, ALLM (automatic switching to low-latency game mode), AMD FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility, Dolby Vision Game and HGiG. Gamebar 2.0 displays an on-screen dashboard to check the refresh rate, latency or HDR format during gameplay. The eARC socket is located on HDMI port 3: by connecting a soundbar to it, three free inputs remain for consoles and the PC.

Ambilight and the new AmbiScape feature

Ambilight, available from Philips for years, consists of LEDs placed behind three edges of the screen, projecting colored light onto the wall in real time to match the displayed image. The halo extends the image onto the wall and reduces eye strain when watching in the dark. The light adapts to the wall color, can follow the rhythm of music and includes a dedicated gaming mode.

This generation’s new feature is called AmbiScape. It extends the lighting effect throughout the room by controlling up to four compatible connected lamps synchronized with the TV. Ambilight performs at its best with a light-colored wall fairly close behind the screen; AmbiScape lamps, however, must be purchased separately.

Integrated 70-watt 2.2 sound

The audio section combines a 70-watt 2.2-channel configuration, distributed between four 10-watt speakers, two 15-watt modules and a slim-profile 20 mm bass reflex woofer. Digital filtering distributes frequencies between the channels and the two small subwoofers. Dolby Atmos Virtualizer technology simulates sound height without ceiling speakers, DTS:X is supported and a Dialogue mode brings voices forward during spoken passages.

This section is sufficient for everyday TV, sports and series viewing. For a room dedicated to cinema, the eARC socket on HDMI port 3 allows a soundbar or home theater amplifier to be connected for greater presence and bass. The TV also supports Dolby Atmos through headphones and connects via Bluetooth 5.4 to wireless earbuds.

TITAN OS and the connected ecosystem

The 48OLED811 runs TITAN OS, a European platform, rather than Google TV or Android TV. The main streaming applications are preinstalled: Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, HBO and the in-house TITAN Channel. The remote control includes a microphone for voice control, and the TV communicates with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple AirPlay, Matter and Control4. Connectivity is provided through dual-band Wi-Fi 6.

The interface remains lightweight and fast to use. Its app catalog is more limited than that of the most comprehensive systems and continues to expand, but the essential streaming services are covered. The TV receives terrestrial and satellite broadcasts thanks to its DVB-T, DVB-T2, DVB-C, DVB-S and DVB-S2 tuners, and supports HbbTV for catch-up services.
