Triangle Solstice 3 home theater speaker package

Using five speakers from the same family ensures that a voice or effect retains the same timbre as it moves from one channel to another. This package brings together four Solstice 3 bookshelf speakers and one Solstice C3 center speaker, the generation that Triangle launched in the lineage of its Esprit series. All five speakers share the same drivers and cabinet design, ensuring sonic continuity from one channel to the next.

The same design for all five channels

All five speakers use the same tweeter and woofer-midrange driver; only the number of drivers and cabinet type vary from model to model. The TZ2540MG tweeter combines a 25 mm aluminum-magnesium alloy dome with a small horn. Its phase plug, molded in a single piece with a barrel-shaped base, smooths treble dispersion over a wide listening area, which is useful when several people are seated in front of the screen. The 16 cm driver features a natural cellulose pulp cone mounted on a new die-cast aluminum basket, whose curved profile is designed for neutrality.

Inside, the DVAS (Driver Vibration Absorption System) connects the drivers to the cabinet structure via braces that rest against them. The idea is to channel driver vibrations into the cabinet rather than allowing them to color the sound. Since the tweeter and woofer-midrange driver are common across the entire range, a dialogue moving from the center speaker to a front speaker, or an effect to a surround speaker, occurs without any change in tonal character.

Solstice 3 speakers as front and surround channels

Four Solstice 3 speakers occupy the front left and right channels and the two surround channels. This two-way bookshelf speaker uses a bass-reflex design: a port housed in its base extends low frequencies by using the air set in motion behind the cone. Its response reaches down to 48 Hz, enough to give body to voices and acoustic instruments even before adding a subwoofer. It renews the philosophy of the Comète, the compact speaker that long held this role at Triangle.

Its 90 dB sensitivity makes it an easy speaker to drive: it requires little power to play loudly and works with a wide choice of amplifiers and home theater receivers. The nominal 8-ohm impedance drops to a minimum of 5.3 ohms, a load that most electronics handle with ease. Each speaker measures 22.1 cm wide by 41.8 cm high and weighs 12.9 kg, a weight that reflects the cabinet’s high-density MDF construction.

In hi-fi and home theater alike, the Solstice 3 accurately reproduces voices and acoustic timbres. Placed on the Triangle S05 stand, it positions the tweeter at ear level, a prerequisite for a well-defined soundstage. As a surround speaker, it can be wall-mounted or placed on a shelf depending on the room.

The C3 center speaker for dialogue

The Solstice C3 differs from the bookshelf speakers in one respect: it uses a sealed enclosure, without a port. The cabinet is airtight, producing tighter, more controlled bass at the expense of slightly reduced extension (50 Hz). This choice offers two advantages for a center channel. Controlled bass keeps dialogue crisp even in busy scenes, while the absence of a port makes installation in an enclosed cabinet, below or above the screen, easier and free from unwanted port noise.

Two 16 cm drivers flank the tweeter: the same woofer-midrange pair as on the bookshelf speaker, doubled. This layout and a 92 dB sensitivity give voices presence and intelligibility, even at high levels: power handling rises to 120 watts RMS. The center speaker measures 54 cm wide, 23.5 cm high and 31 cm deep with its base, and weighs 11.75 kg. In a multichannel soundtrack, including Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, a large proportion of dialogue and front effects passes through this center channel, hence the attention paid to its clarity.

As it shares its drivers with the Solstice 3, an actor’s voice moving across the screen from left to right retains the same texture from one speaker to another. The C3 works equally well with a set of Solstice 3 speakers or the Solstice 8 floorstanding speaker as front channels, for those building their system around the larger models in the range.

Bringing the package together in a listening room

The package forms a 5.0 base: two Solstice 3 speakers at the front, one C3 in the center, and two Solstice 3 speakers as surrounds. All that remains is to add a home theater receiver and, for movie low-frequency effects, a subwoofer, bringing the configuration to 5.1.

Each speaker is suited to rooms from 10 to 35 m². Their good efficiency and stable load do not require oversized electronics: a mainstream receiver drives them without difficulty. Placement still needs attention. The front speakers benefit from being positioned at ear level on S05 stands, the center speaker aligned with the screen, and the surrounds placed slightly above listeners. With the bookshelf speakers already extending down to 48 Hz, a subwoofer is by no means essential for music listening; it is mainly useful for movie effects.

The cabinet, from MDF to rounded edges

The cabinets replace the sharp angles of a rectangular box with rounded edges. This design limits diffraction, the unwanted reflections generated at edges that blur imaging, and gives the veneers a more continuous appearance. Dense, damped high-density MDF forms the basis of the entire construction, reinforced internally by the DVAS system. Several finishes are available, from black to wood veneers. Triangle has designed and assembled its speakers in France since 1980.
