Overview
Drawing a wide spectrum and an open sound from a reduced format: that is the ambition of this two-way bookshelf speaker, the most compact speaker in Triangle’s new Solstice range. It incorporates the company’s in-house innovations developed for the series, a brand-new horn-loaded tweeter and a 16 cm cellulose mid-woofer, in a 12.9 kg cabinet that covers rooms from 10 to 35 m². A compact speaker that aims higher than its size suggests.
A completely new 16 cm driver
The 16 cm mid-woofer was redesigned for the Solstice range. Its injected aluminum basket adopts an arch shape that stiffens the whole assembly and lets air circulate around the cone, including at high volume. The cone is made of natural cellulose pulp, the material Triangle has long worked with for its rendering of voices and acoustic instruments. A new rear bonding method enlarges the radiating surface and smooths the response. On the bass side, the bass-reflex port does not open at the rear but into the plinth, in the form of a laminar duct specific to the range that limits airflow noise. The response extends down to 48 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, a rare low-end extension for this size.
Detailed highs that do not cause fatigue
The tweeter bears the reference TZ2540MG: a 25 mm dome in an aluminum-magnesium alloy, already used on the brand’s Esprit 40th and Magellan 40th series. Aluminum provides rigidity, magnesium damps resonances, enough to maintain precise highs up to 22 kHz without harshness. Triangle has reworked the horn according to a waveguide profile called OS-SEW, which broadens and stabilizes the soundstage. At the back of the horn, a one-piece molded phase plug, barrel-shaped, evens out sound dispersion: the timbre changes little when moving off the speaker axis. The motor uses a neodymium magnet and an absorbent rear chamber that reduces internal reflections and distortion.
Cabinetry that disappears
A speaker sings all the better when its cabinet stays silent. The Solstice 3 uses the DVAS system (Driver Vibration Absorption System): a perforated internal brace, pressed against the driver via a high-density EVA foam gasket, which channels vibrations from the cone before they reach the walls. The cabinet is made of high-density MDF, which partly explains the 12.9 kg shown on the scale. The rounded front edges reduce diffraction, those parasitic reflections on sharp corners that blur the stereo image. Around the drivers, silicone rings with sculpted patterns attenuate the first reflections, framed by a champagne-finish aluminum ring.
Four finishes and a custom plinth
The Solstice 3 comes in four finishes: Teak, Birch, White and Ash Black, with the two wood shades displaying vertical grain. Each speaker comes with a matching magnetic grille, which can be fitted and removed without visible screws. The plinth deserves a word: its base slots into the top plate of the S05 stand, the dedicated support, for a clean mechanical connection that extends the speaker’s lines. The S05 combines a profiled aluminum column with a glass base, with spikes and tips suited to the floor, and comes in Teak and Greige to match the speaker finishes.
Connection and amplification
With 90 dB sensitivity, the Solstice 3 needs only a few watts to play loud. Its nominal impedance of 8 ohms does not drop below 5.3 ohms, a comfortable load for almost all Hi-Fi amplifiers on the market, and it handles 90 watts RMS. Connection is via a single high-conductivity metal binding post, champagne finish: one set of terminals only, with no bi-wiring or bi-amping, reserved for the Solstice 8 in the range. Inside, the crossover is set at 2.8 kHz, with a second-order low-pass on the bass and a third-order high-pass on the treble, and the wiring is OFC copper.
In stereo as well as home theater
In a stereo system, the Solstice 3 highlights voices and acoustic instruments, the favored territory of Triangle’s cellulose cone, without limiting itself to one style: the brand describes it as comfortable across the full range of musical repertoires. The bookshelf format covers rooms from 10 to 35 m², on stands in a living room as well as on a shelf in a bedroom. In home theater, it handles the main left-right channel and is complemented by the sealed Solstice C3 center speaker, which shares the same 16 cm drivers to maintain tonal consistency between channels.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference compared with the Solstice 8?
The Solstice 8 is the floorstanding speaker in the range: three-way, two dedicated woofers, extends down to 38 Hz, and a sound output suited to rooms from 15 to 50 m². The Solstice 3 is a compact two-way speaker that extends down to 48 Hz and covers rooms from 10 to 35 m². The tweeter and acoustic principle are shared by both.
Does the Solstice 3 need an amplifier?
Yes. It is a passive speaker, with no built-in amplification. It connects to a Hi-Fi or home theater amplifier using a standard speaker cable.
What finishes is the Solstice 3 available in?
Four: Teak, Birch, White and Ash Black. Both wood finishes feature vertical grain, and each speaker comes with a magnetically attached grille in a matching color.
Is the S05 stand essential?
No, but it is the stand that matches it exactly: the speaker’s base fits into the top plate of the S05. Any rigid stand that brings the tweeter to ear height works, but the S05’s mechanical fit and matching finish remain difficult to equal.
Does the single terminal block allow bi-wiring?
No. The Solstice 3 has only a single set of terminals. Bi-wiring and bi-amplification are reserved for the Solstice 8 and its dual terminal block. One speaker cable of adequate gauge per channel is sufficient.
Should you add a subwoofer to it?
Not for music: extension down to 48 Hz handles most repertoires in a 10 to 35 m² room. For home theater, a subwoofer remains useful for infra-bass effects that any bookshelf speaker leaves aside.
