Headphones with a wooden headband and aluminum earcups deserve better than the bottom of a backpack. Kaiku Acoustics, a Finnish manufacturer based in Kuopio, offers a leather carrying case for its Wave and Lite headphones, secured with a zipper and lined with a soft material. The principle is simple: keep the headphones safe from scratches and impacts, at home or on the go, in an understated-looking item.

Leather, stitching and a soft lining

The exterior is leather, not faux leather or coated fabric. This material ages well when cared for and retains its shape after years of use, whereas a synthetic coating often eventually cracks. The stitching is tight and even. This is something to watch for in a case that is opened and closed several times a day, as inexpensive cases often fail first at their seams.

Inside, a soft lining holds the headphones. It prevents direct contact with the leather and zipper, which matters for headphones whose anodized aluminum earcups and wooden headband can be marked by contact with a hard object. The Kaiku Lite uses this over-ear format and these 40 mm drivers in a lighter (190 g) wired version, supplied with a 1.5 m 3.5 mm jack cable.

Other headphones of comparable size can also fit inside. Compatibility depends on dimensions: headband width, earcup size, and whether or not they can swivel flat. Bulkier headphones may strain the closure and wear out the zipper; it is best to compare their measurements with those of a Wave before choosing.
