Overview

Designed for both Hi-Fi enthusiasts and film and gaming aficionados, the TX-NR838 network A/V receiver combines pure analog power with the latest high-resolution audio and video processing. This powerful receiver, built on Onkyo’s “Emotion, Delivered” high-current amplification concept, features a custom-built massive transformer and a separate inverted three-stage Darlington amplifier circuit.

Hi-Fi enthusiasts will appreciate the selectable Pure Direct Analog Path mode, which shuts down all digital circuitry when listening to vinyl or other high-quality audio sources. Signals, routed via phono or analog inputs to the amplifiers, ensure pristine sound completely free from digital noise. High-resolution fans can stream their 5.6 MHz DSD or 192 kHz/24-bit high-resolution albums over the network using the Remote App.

Music lovers seeking an instant dose of tunes can listen to tracks stored on their smartphone via the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions. The TX-NR838 also includes a range of cutting-edge features for movies and gaming, including 4K/60 Hz-compatible HDMI terminals, HDCP 2.2 compatibility for future premium Ultra HD content, and exceptional power for a true surround sound experience.

UNE TRÈS BONNE MARQUE DANS LE MONDE DU HOME CINEMA

Les plus : très bon produit.
Les moins : ras.

First, let's talk about the qualities. With a JBL 7.1 pack, the sound is simply magical. Lots of depth, very clear sound at both low and high volumes. The best part is the auto-calibration - I'm used to adjusting levels after auto-calibration on other devices, but here no adjustment was needed and I've never experienced such perfect 3D immersion. In terms of connectivity, well, there's everything you need. Now moving on to the drawbacks: I find the Zone 2 management to be very poor. I had actually chosen this model for that reason, otherwise I would have taken the lower model. To start, if you activate Zone 2 and turn off the TV in that zone, you no longer have an HDMI signal on the main screen. So you have to constantly juggle when you want to turn the Z2 TV on and off. Very annoying. You can do it on the amp or the remote, but with the remote, returning to the main screen functions is done by a button on the remote that internally manages the switching of Z and Z2 commands. No signal is sent to the amp for the switch, so it's impossible to program my universal remote to return to Z1 commands if I selected Z2 before. In short, I'm forced to use the amp's remote or do it manually on the front panel to manage Z2. To avoid too much manipulation, we force ourselves to leave the Z2 TV on even if there's no one there (not very eco-friendly). Another flaw: even if you don't use Z2, the amp cuts the HDMI signal from the main screen when there's a black screen output from the source. Let me explain - when you change channels on Canalsat, 2 out of 3 times, when changing channels, the amp resets the HDMI signal and so you have no picture and sound for 3 to 4 seconds. Channel surfing becomes very tedious. Finally, for the price, a more modern display would have been nice - luckily the light ring on the volume knob lets us see that it's not a 90s amp. At first, given the sound quality, I was hesitating to give it 5 stars, but listing the problems related to Zone 2 management and the HDMI signal cuts in zapping mode, I finally told myself it only deserves 3. I'm sticking with 4 stars, I'm having such a blast listening to movies. Thanks to HCS for the fast delivery. Alex

Pros: sound quality - Perfect auto-calibration.
Cons: HDMI switching in zone 2 is cumbersome.

Alex

Les plus : qualité du son - Autocalibration parfaite.
