The Dark Star Reference RB880 follows the approach developed by Transrotor since 1976, with an emphasis on refined technical design. Compared with the standard Dark Star model, this Reference version introduces a dual POM chassis structure, designed to improve mechanical isolation and limit vibration transmission. The package includes the Rega RB880 tonearm and the Uccello cartridge, in a configuration designed to provide precise and stable vinyl record playback.

Technical architecture and materials

The defining feature of this Dark Star Reference lies in its construction entirely made from POM (polyoxymethylene), a bold technical choice for Transrotor, which usually favours transparent acrylic. This matte black thermoplastic material offers exceptional rigidity while providing excellent internal damping properties, creating an ideal foundation for analogue playback.

The dual 30mm-thick chassis represents the major evolution over the standard model. This two-level architecture creates enhanced vibration isolation, effectively decoupling the platter and tonearm from external disturbances. The massive 60mm-thick platter, also made from POM, incorporates brass weights to optimise rotational inertia.

This modular construction also allows for interesting upgrade potential: an owner of a standard Dark Star can later add the second chassis to transform their turntable into a Reference version.

Drive system and speed control

Belt drive combined with the external synchronous motor ensures quiet operation, an essential criterion for a turntable of this calibre. The Konstant Eins power supply, supplied with the turntable, goes beyond the simple role of a power supply unit: it integrates 33 and 45 rpm speed selection as well as fine adjustment for each speed, allowing rotation to be precisely adjusted according to the requirements of each record.

Rega RB880 tonearm: optimised British precision

The Rega RB880 tonearm fitted to this Dark Star Reference benefits from specific optimisations to perfectly match the turntable’s characteristics. This 9-inch straight aluminium tonearm uses the latest CAD/CAM technology to ensure perfect geometry and minimal resonance.

Its hand-selected bearings and reduced effective mass allow optimal groove tracking, even with high-compliance cartridges. The captive wiring, a signature feature of Rega tonearms, has been optimised for this specific application, delivering uncompromising signal transmission.

Uccello cartridge: Transrotor harmony

The supplied Uccello MM cartridge represents Transrotor’s balanced approach to transduction. Similar in its characteristics to the renowned Goldring 1022GX, it offers optimal compatibility with most MM phono preamplifiers on the market.
