The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max revolutionizes established home cinema standards with a record brightness of 5700 ISO lumens, finally making quality projection possible even in broad daylight. This remarkable technical performance is accompanied by certified colorimetric precision (ΔE < 0.8), a dynamic contrast ratio of one million to one, and gaming latency of just 1 millisecond. XGIMI delivers its most accomplished model here, combining cutting-edge optics and intelligent features in a carefully designed chassis.
The Horizon 20 Max adopts a refined “Elephant Gray” finish, enhanced with a leather-like texture that gives it a distinctive visual presence. With its compact dimensions (249 × 298 × 190 mm) and weight of 5.4 kg, the device remains relatively compact for a projector of this power. The integrated stand allows complete 360° horizontal rotation and vertical adjustment up to 135°, offering remarkable positioning flexibility.
The construction exudes solidity, with quality materials that reflect the product’s premium positioning. The integration of Harman Kardon speakers in the chassis has been carefully crafted, with a 630 cm³ acoustic chamber optimizing low-frequency reproduction. The operating noise level remains contained at just 28 dB at one meter, an appreciable performance for a device in this category.
The connection interface proves comprehensive with two HDMI 2.1 ports (including one eARC compatible), two USB ports (3.0 and 2.0), a mini-jack audio output, and an optical SPDIF output. Wireless connectivity is not left behind with dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, ensuring smooth transmissions for streaming and audio peripherals.
At the heart of the Horizon 20 Max lies the X-Master Red Ring lens, the result of XGIMI’s internal development. This optical system combines 14 grade A glass elements with vacuum multi-layer coating, achieving exceptional light transmission of 99.6%. The triple RGB laser system integrates 40 laser chips distributed across the three primary colors, a configuration that effectively controls speckle and fringing phenomena inherent to this technology.
The motorized lens shift is a first in this price range. With a displacement amplitude of ±120% vertical and ±45% horizontal, it allows precise adjustment of image position without distortion or resolution loss. This feature, usually reserved for professional projectors, considerably simplifies installation by avoiding the need for trapezoidal digital correction that degrades image quality.
The 1.25× optical zoom (projection ratio 1.2-1.5:1) completes this arsenal by offering additional flexibility to adapt projection size without moving the device. The usable diagonal range extends from 102 cm to 762 cm, allowing comfortable projection up to 300 inches under optimal conditions.
The Horizon 20 Max’s 5700 ISO lumens brightness establishes a new standard for home projectors. This luminous power, achieved through the triple RGB laser system, enables comfortable use even in very bright environments. Color coverage reaches 110% of the BT.2020 space, far exceeding human perception and guaranteeing faithful reproduction of the most demanding content.
The native contrast of 20,000:1 (with DBLE activated) rises to 1,000,000:1 in dynamic mode, ensuring deep blacks and excellent differentiation of dark nuances. SGS certification attests to colorimetric precision with a Delta E below 0.8, placing the projector at the level of professional monitors in terms of chromatic fidelity.
Support for the most advanced HDR formats includes Dolby Vision with frame-by-frame dynamic tone mapping, HDR10+ for dynamic metadata adjustment, and IMAX Enhanced certification that optimizes rendering on master content. Filmmaker mode respects directors’ creative intent by disabling any superfluous processing.
XGIMI has particularly refined the gaming aspect of the Horizon 20 Max. Input latency drops to just 1 millisecond in 1080p 240 Hz, rivaling the most powerful gaming monitors. In 4K 60 Hz, it remains contained at 3 milliseconds, enabling responsive experience even on the most demanding games.
Support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) guarantees perfect synchronization with next-generation consoles. Specific game modes automatically optimize settings according to genre: FPS mode maximizes fluidity, RTS mode reveals details in dark areas, while RPG and Sport modes finely adjust colorimetry and motion processing.
Dedicated features like black equalizer allow spotting opponents hidden in shadows, while virtual crosshair improves aiming precision in shooting games. The MediaTek MT9679 processor paired with Mali G52 GPU ensures smooth processing of 4K content with MEMC motion interpolation.
The ISA 5.0 (Intelligent Screen Adaption) system fully automates projector configuration. Focus is achieved instantly thanks to an integrated camera, while automatic keystone correction guarantees a perfectly rectangular image regardless of orientation. Obstacle detection intelligently adjusts the projection area to avoid parasitic objects.
Wall color adaptation constitutes a particularly innovative function. The projector analyzes the projection surface tint (from 3000K to 15000K) and automatically compensates to maintain faithful colors. Eye protection instantly stops projection if someone passes in front of the lens, thus preserving children’s or pets’ vision.
AI Super Resolution (AISR) improves low-resolution content definition in real-time through machine learning algorithms. This intelligent upscaling preserves details while reducing artifacts, offering optimal image quality even on HD or lower sources.
Native Google TV integration marks a turning point for XGIMI, with Netflix directly accessible for the first time without additional manipulation. The fluid interface provides access to all major streaming platforms: YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, and many others. The 128 GB internal storage allows installing numerous applications without saturation.
Google Home transforms the projector into a home automation hub, enabling voice control via Google Assistant. Voice commands manage not only content playback but also all projector settings. GoogleCast function facilitates wireless streaming from smartphones and tablets, while DLNA ensures compatibility with local media servers.
The 4 GB RAM guarantees smooth navigation even with multiple applications open simultaneously. The operating system, based on Android TV, benefits from regular updates adding features and optimizations.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 is an excellent projector for movies. It combines high brightness, strong contrast, and vibrant color, so it performs well in both dark rooms and rooms with a bit of ambient light. Its contrast does weaken in near-dark scenes, where blacks can look slightly elevated, but overall, it's still an excellent choice for watching movies. [...] It supports high refresh rates, and it feels noticeably more responsive at 120Hz and above than it does at 60Hz. [...] It also supports VRR, though enabling it introduces visible color separation artifacts, so whether it's worth using will depend on your tolerance for that trade-off.
The Horizon 20 Max is capable of being a seriously enjoyable watch across a surprisingly wide range of room conditions.[...] This welcome new interest from Xgimi in creating a picture that’s built around immersion, balance and refinement is joined by outstanding sharpness, too.[...] Dark scenes can look a touch grey if you fancy a serious dark room movie night, though, and the rainbow effect can be hard to ignore.
The Xgimi Horizon 20 Max is incredibly bright for a home cinema projector, and it does hold up well in a bright room.[...] In its darkened environment, the Horizon 20 Max looks very good. Black levels are strong – black tones actually look black – with a colour performance that's warm and rich.[...] While the colours are attractive, they're not always the most accurate, even in Dolby Vision.[...] The soundstage feels big, and I didn't feel the need to raise it above level 40 as it was loud enough and filled the room with sound.[...] BBC iPlayer, just like it was with the Horizon S Max, is not supported but the rest of the UK catch-up apps are.
With its 5700 ISO lumens, the projector offers a visible image even in very bright environments. For optimal quality, a semi-dark room remains preferable, but unlike conventional projectors, the image remains usable with significant ambient light. Triple RGB laser technology maintains vivid colors even under these difficult conditions.
Lens shift allows optically moving the projected image without touching the projector or distorting the image. Unlike digital keystone correction that crops pixels, optical displacement preserves intact native 4K resolution. The exceptional amplitude (±120% vertical, ±45% horizontal) authorizes complex installations while preserving quality.
The two 12W Harman Kardon speakers each offer clear sound with bass extension down to 55 Hz. For daily use, the quality proves largely sufficient. Purists can exploit the HDMI eARC or optical output to connect an external audio system, but the sound integration already enables a satisfying experience.
