Audio-Technica ATN95E: replacement stylus

Forty years after its introduction, the AT95E cartridge is still installed on a considerable number of turntables around the world. This ATN95E replacement stylus extends the life of this benchmark cartridge, or restores its original sound qualities after several hundred hours of playback. It is an essential wear part for owners of turntables originally fitted with an AT95E, and is also compatible with the older AT93 and AT95.

An elliptical stylus tip for more faithful playback

The ATN95E stylus features an elliptical profile with dimensions of 0.3 × 0.7 mil (10 × 18 µm). This more refined geometry than that of a spherical stylus better follows the groove profile and accesses more finely engraved information. Reproduction gains definition in the upper range, with better channel separation and reduced distortion on complex passages.

The stylus is mounted on a tubular metal-alloy cantilever, a choice that offers a good compromise between rigidity and lightness. This combination ensures precise tracking of modulations without excessively increasing the moving mass.

Settings and compatibility

The recommended tracking force is 2 grams, within a usable range from 1.5 to 2.5 g. This moderate setting is gentle on records while ensuring stable groove contact. The AT95E cartridge operates optimally with a load capacitance between 100 and 200 pF, a parameter to consider if your phono preamp allows this type of adjustment.

Beyond the AT95E cartridge, this stylus fits directly onto the now discontinued AT93 and AT95 models, as well as several related references in the Audio-Technica family (AT3400, AT3401, AT3410, AT3450, AT3451). Replacement is done simply by unclipping the old stylus and inserting the new one, with no special tools required.

When to replace your stylus

An elliptical stylus maintains its properties for around 300 to 500 hours of playback, depending on the condition of the records, the cleanliness of the stylus, and the accuracy of the turntable’s setup. Beyond that, tip wear can degrade sound quality and, more importantly, irreversibly damage the grooves. Signs of wear generally include a loss of sparkle in the highs, slight distortion on dense passages, or less stable tracking at the end of each side.

Keeping a spare stylus on hand avoids prolonged interruptions and makes it easy to compare the sound of a new stylus with the one in use, in order to assess its degree of wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this stylus compatible with Audio-Technica’s new VM95 series?

No. Although the AT95E and AT-VM95E cartridges share a technical heritage, their bodies and mechanisms differ. ATN95E styli only fit AT95E, AT95, AT93 cartridges and related models (AT3400, AT3450, etc.). For the VM95 series, you must use the corresponding AT-VMN95 styli.

How do I know if my turntable is fitted with an AT95E cartridge?

Check the body of the cartridge mounted on your tonearm: the model number is usually printed on the top or side. Many entry-level and mid-range turntables (Audio-Technica AT-LP120, Fluance RT81, some Dual, Technics or Pioneer models) are supplied with this cartridge or a compatible variant.

What is the difference between a spherical and an elliptical stylus?

A spherical stylus has a rounded tip that contacts a wider area of the groove. A more tapered elliptical stylus touches a smaller surface closer to the groove walls, allowing it to read finer details and deliver better high-frequency response.

Do I need to readjust the cartridge after changing the stylus?

No, replacing the stylus does not alter the cartridge’s alignment or geometry. Simply check that the new stylus is firmly snapped into place and that the tracking force is still set to the recommended value (2 g).

How can I clean the stylus to extend its lifespan?

Use a fine-bristled brush, moving from back to front (never sideways). For stubborn deposits, a dedicated stylus cleaning fluid can be applied sparingly. Also clean your records before each listening session to reduce the build-up of abrasive dust.

Are there higher-quality styli available to upgrade my AT95E cartridge?

Yes, several manufacturers offer compatible styli with more advanced profiles (hyper-elliptical, Shibata, microline) that can improve resolution and tracking. These options offer an upgrade path without changing cartridges, but at a higher cost.
