Cyrus 80 PWR
Overview
Forty years after its beginnings with compact half-width enclosures, Cyrus reaches a new milestone with the 80 series. The 80 PWR is the British brand’s first power amplifier to adopt the standard 440 mm format, a break from its historic aesthetic that comes with a notable power increase: 200 watts per channel in Class A/B, double that of the Classic POWER.
A format that unleashes power
The move to a full-width chassis is not just aesthetic. The engineers in Huntingdon took advantage of this extra space to integrate a more substantial power supply, whereas half-width models often required the addition of an external block (such as the PSX-R2) to reach their full potential. On the 80 PWR, these resources are built in as standard. The toroidal transformer has the necessary headroom to support current demands without strain, resulting in comfortable dynamic reserves when faced with complex loads.
The enclosure takes up the visual cues of the 40 series: chamfered lower corners, brushed anodized aluminum finish, discreet LED backlighting. The overall design remains understated and functional, without showiness.
Stereo or bridged mono: two personalities
The 80 PWR offers two switchable operating modes. In stereo configuration, each channel delivers 200 watts into 8 ohms, enough power to drive most floorstanding speakers or low-sensitivity models without strain. The typical Cyrus character is present here: a fast, controlled sound that favors rhythmic precision and clarity over warmth.
Bridged mono mode turns the unit into a 300-watt monoblock. This configuration is intended for setups where two 80 PWRs each power one speaker, with gains in bass authority and channel separation. Switching from one mode to the other is done via a switch on the rear panel.
Balanced connectivity and system integration
The inputs are exclusively balanced XLR, a choice that reflects the premium positioning of the 80 series. Balanced connection provides better rejection of interference over long cable runs and is the standard in carefully assembled separate-component systems.
The 80 PWR forms a natural pairing with the 80 PRE, the preamplifier from the same range. The latter includes the BluOS streaming platform, an ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M DAC, and balanced XLR outputs. Together they form a complete system with streaming, digital and analog sources (including an MM/MC phono input), without requiring third-party components.
Compatibility extends to products from the 40 series: the 40 CD player or the 40 PPA phono preamp can be integrated into the system. The two ranges share visual and technical consistency that allows mixed configurations depending on needs and budget.
Who this amplifier is for
The 80 PWR is designed for speakers that demand high current: low-impedance models, large floorstanders, or demanding configurations where integrated amps show their limits. The power reserve also allows listening at low volume without loss of bass substance, an often overlooked advantage.
The unit has no tone controls or filtering, which assumes a well-thought-out upstream system. It is a power amplifier in the strict sense: it amplifies the signal it is sent, without interpreting it.

General information
The 80 PWR brings effortless authority and remarkable finesse to any setup, with the control and power reserve needed to drive the most demanding speakers with ease. Used in stereo, it delivers expansive and controlled sound reproduction. In bridged mono configuration, it provides even greater scale and impact. In both cases, it embodies Cyrus power at its most accomplished: precise, immersive, and deeply captivating with every listen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between stereo mode and bridged mono mode?
In stereo, the 80 PWR amplifies both channels independently with 200 watts each. In bridged mono, the two channels combine to power a single speaker with 300 watts. This second mode requires two 80 PWRs for a complete system, one per speaker.
Can the 80 PWR work with a preamplifier from another brand?
Yes. The balanced XLR inputs follow the AES standard, which makes it possible to connect any preamplifier equipped with XLR outputs. Just make sure the output levels are compatible.
Does it need an external power supply like the Classic models?
No. The full-width format made it possible to integrate a power supply sized for the intended power level. Unlike the Classic and XR series, the 80 PWR does not have a port for an external power supply block.
Does the 80 PWR get very hot during operation?
Like any Class A/B amplifier of this power, it gives off heat under sustained use. The larger chassis improves heat dissipation compared with compact models. Allow sufficient ventilation space above the unit.
Can the 80 PWR be stacked with other Cyrus components?
The dimensions are compatible with the 80 series (80 PRE, 80 AMP). Stacking with half-width models from the 40 or Classic series is possible but creates a visual asymmetry. Avoid placing heavy components directly on top of the 80 PWR.
What is the warranty?
Cyrus offers a five-year warranty on products in the 80 series, subject to registration and purchase from an authorized dealer.
