A closed-back headset has solid, sealed rear earcups, with no opening to the outside. This seal provides two-way passive isolation: it reduces surrounding noise and keeps sound inside, without disturbing those nearby. You can therefore listen on the train, in an open-plan office or late at night without imposing your music on others. The closed enclosure also enhances bass, giving it more presence and impact than with an open-back headset. The trade-off is a more confined soundstage and the risk of earcup resonances, which good models control through internal damping. During long listening sessions, ears get warmer than with a ventilated model. This format covers a wide range of uses: commuting, studio recording where no leakage must return into the microphone, gaming, late-night listening. Many portable models add active noise cancellation and Bluetooth, while wired versions primarily focus on fidelity. Connection is via a 3.5 or 6.35 mm jack, often with a detachable cable. In contrast, open-back headphones widen the soundstage but let everything through, making them better suited to quiet environments than travel. For mobile use, closed-back models can also be found among portable headphones and accessories, and the full selection is brought together in hi-fi headphones and earphones.
