Overview

The GyroDec, designed by Michell Engineering since 1982, uses a three-point pendulum suspension and an inverted oil-circulating bearing. This British turntable, identifiable by its rotating golden weights, is still manufactured and tuned in the Borehamwood workshops, in accordance with the engineering principles developed by John Michell.

Technical design: rethinking the fundamentals

The Gyrodec upended established conventions in turntable construction when it was unveiled in January 1982. While most manufacturers used hollow wooden plinths, John Michell understood that such structures resonate like guitar bodies. He chose a high-density acrylic plinth, a rigid, non-resonant material that minimizes tonal coloration.

The pendulum subchassis is the cornerstone of this design. Suspended by three helical springs housed in fixed suspension towers, this weighted aluminum subchassis literally floats. This configuration isolates the sensitive elements—bearing, platter, and tonearm—from external vibrations. The suspension towers, topped with gold-colored aluminum caps, allow precise height and level adjustment from the top of the turntable, without disassembly. This ease of adjustment contrasts with competing systems that require access from underneath.

The inverted bearing is a major innovation. Unlike traditional designs where the pivot point sits at the bottom of the assembly, Michell places it at the top. A modified Archimedes screw, machined into the bearing’s inner bore, circulates oil from a reservoir at the base up to the thrust ball at the top. The oil then returns to the reservoir via a channel drilled through the spindle. This continuous circulation during rotation ensures full lubrication of all contact surfaces, reducing friction and mechanical noise.

Platter and drive: the pursuit of stability

The modern Gyrodec platter uses an acrylic/vinyl composite chosen for its vibrational damping properties. This impedance-matching approach—using a material acoustically similar to record vinyl—enables optimal coupling between the record and the platter. Vibrations pass through this interface without reflection, preventing their return to the stylus.

Six solid brass masses, gold-plated and fixed beneath the platter, increase rotational inertia. These peripheral masses, spinning with the platter, create a gyroscopic effect that stabilizes speed. The added mass improves speed consistency and reduces wow and flutter to imperceptible levels. The rotating golden masses are also the turntable’s distinctive visual signature.

The DC motor sits in a solid aluminum housing completely separate from the main chassis. There is no physical contact between the motor pod and the turntable; only a round butyl rubber belt transmits rotation. This belt encircles the platter’s perimeter, distributing driving force evenly. The motor, remarkably reliable, can run continuously without damage. Its high torque contributes to speed stability, particularly during complex musical passages.

Accessories and optimization

The hinged dust cover in clear acrylic protects the turntable from dust while letting you admire the mechanics in motion. Two-part hinges make it easy to remove the cover completely for extended listening sessions. The standard record clamp helps flatten slightly warped records and reduces resonances in the disc. The clamp’s mass firmly couples the vinyl to the platter, forming a cohesive assembly that improves groove tracking.

The turntable accepts a wide range of tonearms thanks to specific mounting plates. Plates of different weights help maintain the subchassis’s static and dynamic balance regardless of the arm’s mass. Standard drillings accept Rega, Linn, and SME arms without modification.

Michell offers various upgrades to evolve the turntable. The HR power supply is a worthwhile replacement for the standard unit, offering superior regulation and lower residual noise. The heavy platter from the Orbe can be fitted to the Gyrodec, adding more mass and inertia. The Isobase base provides additional isolation from structural vibrations.

Differences from the Gyro SE

The Gyro SE (Spider Edition) retains the essential mechanical elements of the Gyrodec but replaces the full rectangular plinth with a three-spoke acrylic “spider” chassis. This configuration significantly reduces the turntable’s footprint—the Gyro SE requires less shelf space than a full Gyrodec. The absence of an integrated dust cover leaves the mechanics more exposed to dust, requiring more frequent maintenance or the addition of an optional cover.

Both models share the same suspended subchassis, inverted bearing, platter with peripheral masses, and outboard motor. Sound performance remains very close, with some users even preferring the Gyro SE for its minimalist chassis, which may be less prone to resonances. The Gyrodec, however, maintains its status as the historic model with its imposing visual presence and integrated dust protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should the main bearing be serviced?

The inverted bearing requires an oil change approximately every five to six years. The procedure involves removing the platter, thoroughly cleaning the surfaces, and refilling with 2.5 to 3 mm of 0W-40 synthetic oil. Michell provides detailed instructions for this maintenance, which can be performed by the user with care.

How do you properly adjust the suspension?

The three springs are adjusted by rotating them from above, allowing you to set the subchassis height and level. A spirit level checks for perfect leveling. The subchassis should “bounce” vertically without lateral sway when lightly pressed. This adjustment is done with the turntable in place, unlike systems that require turning the unit over.

Can any cartridge be used with this turntable?

The Gyrodec accommodates cartridges of both moving-coil and moving-magnet types, with the choice depending on the mounted arm and the phono preamplifier used. The supplied record clamp improves coupling with all cartridges. The turntable’s tonal neutrality lets you appreciate each cartridge’s own characteristics without added coloration.

Are the golden masses purely decorative?

These six gold-plated brass masses serve an essential technical function. Positioned at the platter’s periphery, they significantly increase its moment of inertia. This added mass stabilizes rotation, reducing instantaneous speed variations caused by groove modulation. Their rotation also creates the Gyrodec’s characteristic hypnotic visual effect.

Does the turntable require frequent adjustments?

Once properly installed and set up, the Gyrodec runs for years without intervention. The initial suspension and leveling settings remain stable. Only bearing maintenance roughly every five years and occasional belt replacement constitute regular upkeep. This long-term reliability has characterized Michell engineering for four decades.
