The AT-VM95EN is a stereo cartridge with moving magnets that occupies a mid-range position in Audio-Technica’s VM95 lineup. It features a 0.3 x 0.7 mil nude elliptical diamond, cut from a single cylindrical diamond block and mounted on an aluminum cantilever. This design aims to reduce moving mass and improve rigidity compared to bonded tips. The cartridge offers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 23 kHz and an output voltage of 3.5 mV, making it suitable for users looking to upgrade their vinyl system without moving up to higher-end models.
The Vertical Dual Magnet (VM) design faithfully reproduces the configuration of the cutting head used to create the vinyl master. The standard cutting head uses two transducer coils, mounted perpendicular to each other at 45° from the horizontal, to engrave the channel: one in each wall of the groove at 90°.
VM cartridges use the same V-shaped 90° configuration, enabling precise tracking, excellent channel separation, high stereo image definition, and extreme clarity across the entire audio spectrum. This technical solution increases the cartridge’s magnetic performance. Channel separation is enhanced by an isolation plate between the coils, reaching 22 dB at 1 kHz on the AT-VM95EN.
This sophisticated architecture results in a remarkable ability to extract information engraved in the groove, while maintaining exemplary spatial and temporal coherence. Micro-modulations are reproduced with surgical precision, without sacrificing the fluidity and naturalness of the sound.
The fundamental difference between the AT-VM95EN and its younger sibling, the AT-VM95E, lies in the diamond’s construction. On a bonded (or jointed) stylus, a diamond tip is glued to a metal shank, which is itself glued into the cantilever’s hole. While cost-effective, this method has acoustic limitations.
In contrast, the nude diamond is a single piece of diamond set into the cantilever, allowing for better transmission of groove information. A nude stylus is also lighter than a bonded one. This reduction in mass results in a clear improvement in playback quality, especially in the faithful reproduction of high frequencies and transient response.
The 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical profile offers an optimal compromise between contact surface and reading finesse. The elliptical tip has a larger front radius than its side radius. This more tapered profile at the edges allows for more precise tracking of high frequencies. The lightweight and rigid aluminum tube cantilever faithfully transmits the vibrations picked up by the diamond to the electromagnetic generator.
The AT-VM95EN demonstrates a design focused on practicality. To make installation easier, the Japanese manufacturer includes threading that eliminates the need for nuts: the screws go directly into the body. This seemingly minor feature greatly simplifies installation and ensures optimal tightening torque.
The recommended tracking force of 2.0 g (range 1.8 to 2.2 g) remains within standard values, compatible with the majority of tonearms on the market. The vertical tracking angle of 23° meets established standards, ensuring universal compatibility. The static compliance of 20 × 10^-6 cm/dyne and dynamic compliance of 7 × 10^-6 cm/dyne (100 Hz) guarantee optimal adaptation to medium-mass tonearms.
A particularly interesting aspect of the VM95 range is the interchangeability of styli. All VM95 models have removable styli and the same body design, allowing vinyl enthusiasts to swap and upgrade any VM95 cartridge with any VM95 stylus type. This modularity enables progressive system upgrades, from the conical VM95C stylus to the prestigious Shibata VM95SH.
The AT-VM95EN’s sonic signature is characterized by a remarkable balance between analytical precision and musicality. The extended bandwidth of 20 Hz to 23 kHz is reproduced with exemplary linearity, without artificially highlighting any part of the spectrum.
The bass is articulate and tight, with definition that allows you to clearly distinguish different bass lines, even in the most complex passages. The midrange, a crucial area for reproducing vocals and many instruments, benefits from transparency and harmonic density that give body to timbres without weighing them down.
It’s in the treble register that the nude elliptical diamond reveals its full potential. Upper harmonics are reproduced with delicacy and natural extension, without excessive brightness or harshness. Cymbals retain their characteristic metallic texture, violins their silkiness, and female voices their airy presence.
The 22 dB channel separation helps create a stable and well-defined soundstage. Instruments occupy their own space without masking each other, creating a convincing sense of depth and width. The localization of sound sources remains precise, even in the densest recordings.
The lifespan of an elliptical stylus is estimated at around 300 hours of normal use. However, the nude diamond construction of the AT-VM95EN, combined with optimal usage conditions (clean records, correct settings), can extend this duration. Regular maintenance and careful handling are essential to maximize longevity.
Absolutely. VM95 cartridges use the same body: all styli in the series are compatible. The AT-VMN95EN replacement stylus can be installed on any cartridge in the VM95 series, offering an economical and effective upgrade.
The main distinction lies in the diamond’s construction. The AT-VM95E uses a bonded elliptical diamond on a metal shank, while the AT-VM95EN features a nude diamond cut from a single piece. This difference results in reduced moving mass and more direct transmission of vibrations, significantly improving resolution and transients.
The AT-VM95EN, being a moving magnet (MM) cartridge with an output voltage of 3.5 mV, is compatible with virtually all phono preamplifiers on the market. The recommended load impedance of 47 kΩ and capacitance of 100-200 pF meet industry standards.
Precise setup is crucial: tracking force at 2.0 g, correct alignment of the headshell (using a protractor is recommended), and checking the vertical tracking angle (VTA). Using clean records and regularly cleaning the stylus with an appropriate brush will ensure optimal long-term performance.

Good cartridge in its price category. An improvement over the green AT95E on the AT-LP120, especially in terms of timbres, I find. Good build quality; however, the assembly instructions should be more readable.
