The number 1 in classical music and hi-fi. It is a benchmark in the field of classical music and hi-fi, as well as the distinction it awards to the best devices each year
Each year, dozens of European journalists gather to select the best electronic products of the year. Awarded by a diverse and impartial jury, the EISA (Expert Imaging and Sound Association) awards recognize exceptional products for their performance, design, or ergonomics.
The Rotel Michi S5 represents the culmination of over three years of development to create an exceptional stereo power amplifier. With 500 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 800 watts at 4 ohms, this imposing 60 kg power block embodies the audiophile philosophy in its purest form. Its dual-mono design, custom toroidal transformers, and hand-selected components enable it to deliver reference-quality sound, combining surgical precision with captivating musicality. The Michi S5 also stands out for its elegant design, featuring a glass front panel and a customizable display, making it as beautiful to look at as it is to listen to.
At the heart of the Michi S5 lies a rigorous dual-mono architecture. This design completely separates the left and right channels, from the power supply to the output stages, eliminating any interference between channels. Two massive 2200 VA toroidal transformers, designed and manufactured in-house by Rotel, independently power each channel. These transformers are housed in separate epoxy-filled compartments to eliminate noise and unwanted vibrations.
The power supply is further distinguished by its four filter capacitors totaling 18,000 microfarads. This substantial energy reserve allows the S5 to respond instantly to the most demanding requirements, ensuring dynamic reproduction without compression, even during the most complex musical passages. The 32 high-capacity output transistors ensure stable and linear amplification, regardless of the load presented by the speakers.
The exceptional damping factor of 350 (measured at 1 kHz into 8 ohms) demonstrates the S5’s ability to perfectly control speaker movement. This results in remarkably precise bass reproduction, with no lag or muddiness. The total harmonic distortion of less than 0.008% and the extended frequency response (10 Hz to 100 kHz, +0 dB, -0.4 dB) complete this impressive technical profile.
Despite its colossal power, the Michi S5 operates in class AB, a deliberate choice by the designers to preserve musicality and sonic transparency. This traditional yet expertly executed approach avoids the sonic artifacts sometimes associated with high-power class D amplification.
The listening experience offered by the Michi S5 is characterized by a rare balance between analytical precision and emotional engagement. The soundstage it creates impresses with its width, depth, and stability. Each instrument finds its place in a perfectly defined three-dimensional space, creating a striking sense of presence.
In the low frequencies, the S5 demonstrates exceptional authority and articulation. Even the most complex bass lines are reproduced with remarkable definition and energy, never bleeding into the rest of the spectrum. This mastery extends to the midrange, rendered with a transparency and harmonic richness that give body and substance to voices and instruments.
The highs benefit from admirable extension and finesse, revealing the subtlest nuances of recordings without ever becoming aggressive or harsh. This ability to reproduce micro-details greatly contributes to the sense of realism that emerges from the listening experience.
Perhaps the S5’s most impressive quality is its dynamic agility. Its power reserve allows it to move instantly from the most delicate whisper to the most intense orchestral explosion, with no sign of compression or limitation. This dynamic agility breathes life and energy into all musical genres, from intimate jazz to grand symphonic works.
Particularly noteworthy is the S5’s ability to maintain these qualities regardless of the impedance of the connected speakers. Measurements show that its frequency response remains virtually identical with a real-world load or a pure resistive load, demonstrating its ability to perfectly control the electromechanical behavior of the speakers.
The design of the Michi S5 breaks away from Rotel’s usual aesthetic, adopting a more sophisticated and contemporary approach. Its imposing silhouette is softened by curved lines that visually lighten its mass. The understated elegance of the black glass front panel is dominated by a high-definition color display.
This display is much more than a decorative element. It can show various useful information such as the device’s internal temperature, a VU meter indicating output level, or a spectrum analyzer visualizing the distribution of audio signal frequencies. These different display options can be selected via the supplied remote control or turned off completely for a minimalist front panel.
The rhodium-plated binding posts accept all types of connectors, from banana plugs to large-gauge bare wires. Their generous layout and spacing make it easy to connect high-end speaker cables, which are often bulky and inflexible.
Despite its considerable weight of nearly 60 kg, the S5 benefits from thoughtful design with integrated handles that make handling easier, as much as possible. However, it is recommended to have two people for installation and a sufficiently sturdy stand to support its weight.
The impeccable build quality is evident in every detail, from the switches to the connectors and the chassis. The latter, particularly rigid, helps eliminate unwanted vibrations that could affect sound quality.
The Michi S5 offers comprehensive connectivity to integrate into the most demanding audio systems. Its balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs allow it to be connected to any type of preamplifier, though it forms an especially harmonious combination with Rotel’s Michi P5 preamplifier.
For complex or automated installations, the S5 features an Ethernet port and an RS-232 interface for integration into common home automation systems. These connections allow remote control of the amplifier, including standby, display settings, or input selection.
The input and output trigger jacks make it easy to synchronize power on and off with other components in the audio chain. This feature is particularly useful in complex setups with multiple devices.
Firmware updates can be performed via the Ethernet port, ensuring the longevity of your investment by allowing new features to be added or potential issues to be corrected.
The Michi S5 represents the pinnacle of Rotel technology with a fully dual-mono design, custom toroidal transformers, and premium components. Compared to the Series 14 or 15 amplifiers, it offers significantly higher power, better control of demanding speakers, and even more refined sound quality. The Michi series also features a distinctive aesthetic with its glass front panel and customizable color display.
Thanks to its considerable power and high damping factor, the S5 can drive virtually any speakers, including the most demanding models in terms of impedance and sensitivity. It excels particularly with high-end speakers such as the Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series, Focal Sopra or Utopia, KEF Reference, or Magico. These pairings allow you to fully exploit its dynamic capabilities and exceptional control.
While the S5 can operate with any quality preamplifier, pairing it with the P5 offers optimal aesthetic and technical coherence. Both devices were designed together and share the same sonic philosophy. The P5 also features high-quality 32-bit AKM digital-to-analog converters that perfectly complement the S5’s capabilities.
The S5 generates a significant amount of heat during operation, especially at high listening volumes. It is essential to install it in a well-ventilated space, leaving at least 10 cm of free space around the device. Avoid placing it in a closed cabinet without adequate ventilation. The display allows you to monitor the internal temperature, which can be useful to prevent overheating.
XLR inputs use a balanced connection that offers better rejection of electromagnetic interference, especially over long cable runs. RCA inputs, which are unbalanced, are more common but potentially more susceptible to noise. If your preamplifier has XLR outputs, choose this connection for optimal performance, especially in electrically noisy environments or with cables longer than 3 meters.
