Focal Alpha 65 Evo Monitoring Speaker

The Focal Alpha 65 Evo is a professional active 2-way monitoring speaker, designed and manufactured in France. It represents the evolution of the Alpha range, highly appreciated in home studios and small studios since its launch in 2014. Focal has revamped the design and integrated new technologies in this new “Evo” version to offer enhanced performance.

Design and Construction

The Alpha 65 Evo adopts a more modern and rounded look than the previous model. The front features a large laminar bass-reflex port to optimize airflow and bass response, even when placed close to a wall. The sides of the speaker are reinforced to minimize vibrations. The tweeter is mounted in a profiled waveguide for even dispersion.

Speakers and Amplification

The Alpha 65 Evo is equipped with a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) woofer with a Slatefiber composite membrane, a new material exclusive to Focal. Made of recycled carbon fibers and thermoplastic polymers, Slatefiber offers lightness, rigidity, and excellent damping for dynamic and precise sound across the spectrum. The 1-inch (25 mm) inverted dome aluminum tweeter has been a Focal signature since 1981. It acts as a true micro-speaker to reproduce high frequencies with finesse and micro-details.

Each speaker is powered by its own dedicated amplifier. The woofer receives 55 W RMS while the tweeter benefits from 25 W RMS, all in Class D. This bi-amplification delivers high current capacity for total control of signal dynamics, without distortion even at high levels. The frequency response ranges from 40 Hz to 22 kHz at ± 3 dB with a maximum SPL level of 104 dB peak at 1 meter.

Connectivity and Settings

Connectivity includes a balanced input on XLR, a balanced input on 6.35 mm TRS jack, and an unbalanced input on RCA. All three inputs can be used simultaneously. A selector allows adjusting the input sensitivity to 0 dB or +6 dB.

The rear panel also includes a bass shelving filter at ± 6 dB acting from 0 to 300 Hz and a treble shelving filter at ± 3 dB between 4.5 and 22 kHz. These filters allow adapting the speaker’s response to the acoustics of the listening room. A switch activates or deactivates the automatic standby mode after 15 minutes without a signal.

Sound Qualities

Compared to the original Alpha 65, the Alpha 65 Evo stands out with more precise and better-defined bass, extending down to 40 Hz. The midrange is detailed and clear, without notable coloration. The tweeter delivers smooth and refined highs, without aggressiveness even at high volume. The stereo imaging is wide and stable, with excellent focus on phantom sources.

The Alpha 65 Evo sounds generally neutral and balanced, while maintaining a dynamic and lively character. It reveals a high level of detail and micro-information, allowing for meticulous work on timbres and tonal balance. Its precise transient response also makes it a good tool for rhythmic and percussive mixing.
