Overview
The T-1200 is the latest addition to the high-end FM tuner range from the Japanese manufacturer Accuphase. Combining unique expertise in RF analog circuits with cutting-edge digital processing, this tuner offers exceptional performance for music and sound enthusiasts.
An optimized input stage for flawless reception
The design of the input stage is crucial for an FM tuner. It must offer high selectivity to capture weak signals while effectively managing high-power stations. The T-1200 brilliantly achieves this with a dual-tuning circuit placed before the RF amplification stage. This topology proactively prevents intermodulation distortion and blocking that can occur with strong input signals.
A second dual-tuning circuit after the RF amplifier further enhances performance, ensuring excellent sensitivity and selectivity. The double-balanced differential input mixer also uses a two-stage topology, forming a double superheterodyne circuit that effectively blocks any type of interfering signal before intermediate frequency conversion.
A revolutionary local oscillator based on direct digital synthesis
To generate the local oscillator frequency, the T-1200 employs the innovative principle of direct digital synthesis (DDS). Fully driven by a high-precision reference clock signal, the DDS oscillator provides an extremely pure signal with very low phase noise, surpassing conventional oscillators.
Variable bandwidth IF filtering for great versatility
After converting the RF signal to intermediate frequency, a variable bandwidth filter digitally implemented by DSP comes into play. Depending on reception conditions, the IF filter’s bandwidth can be continuously adjusted. This allows for the best combination of selectivity and audio quality. In the presence of interference, the bandwidth is reduced. Conversely, it can be widened under good conditions to favor high fidelity.
A multipath reduction function for echo-free reception
Signal reflections on buildings or terrain can create annoying echoes, especially in stereo. To address this, the T-1200 integrates a multipath reduction (MPR) function that effectively detects and suppresses these parasitic reflections. The result is a stable and precise stereo image, even in challenging reception conditions.
A high-performance digital FM demodulator
After IF filtering, the signal is sent to the digital FM demodulator. Fully implemented in the digital domain through DSP processing, it keeps distortion and noise to a minimum. Combined with an RF level detector, it ensures optimal performance across the entire dynamic range, from the weakest to the strongest signals.
Ideal stereo demodulation thanks to DS-DC technology
To extract the left and right channels from the multiplexed stereo signal, the T-1200 implements an innovative demodulation technique called DS-DC (Direct Synthesis - Double Cancellation). It combines two technologies:
-
Direct synthesis of the pilot carrier through digital processing. Even in the presence of high noise levels, the pilot carrier is reliably generated, ensuring excellent stereo separation.
-
The dual crosstalk cancellation, which eliminates channel leakage by considering both amplitude and phase, results in an extremely high left/right separation.
Entirely executed in the digital domain by DSP algorithms, this stereo demodulation offers unmatched performance.
A high-performance D/A converter for optimal sound reproduction
To convert the digital audio signal from the demodulator into an analog signal, the T-1200 uses a high-performance MDS (Multiple Delta Sigma) type D/A converter. Operating at very high speed, it generates a very high-level quantization noise, which is easily filterable. The result is pure and detailed sound with an extremely low background noise.
Thoughtful ergonomics for intuitive use
Despite its rich functionality, the T-1200 remains very simple to use thanks to well-thought-out ergonomics:
- 20 presets allow you to instantly find your favorite stations.
- The pulse tuning system offers the feel of traditional analog tuning.
- A confirmation beep is heard when using the tuning knob or function buttons.
- An input attenuator allows you to reduce the antenna signal level if necessary.
- A muting circuit cuts the sound between stations.
Comprehensive connectivity including balanced and digital outputs
In addition to traditional unbalanced analog outputs, the T-1200 is equipped with a balanced output using a direct balanced filter circuit. A coaxial digital output is also present, offering the possibility to connect the D/A converter of your choice to customize the sound.
What are the main advantages of the Accuphase T-1200 tuner?
The T-1200 stands out with its highly sophisticated RF input stage capable of handling all types of signals, its extremely precise local oscillator, its advanced digital processing (IF filtering, echo reduction, FM and stereo demodulation), and its excellent ergonomics. It is a concentration of technologies aimed at providing optimal FM reception and sound reproduction.
What are the differences between the T-1200 and a classic FM tuner?
The T-1200 pushes the boundaries of FM tuner design by using cutting-edge digital technologies: DDS synthesis for the local oscillator, variable IF filtering, echo suppression, and stereo demodulation through DSP processing, high-precision D/A conversion. A classic tuner relies on an entirely analog design, with more limited performance.
Why choose a high-end tuner like the T-1200 in the era of digital radio?
Even though digital radio is advancing, FM remains the most widespread way to listen to radio with the best possible quality, especially for music programs. With its ultra-optimized design, the T-1200 allows you to get the best out of FM, offering exceptional hi-fi sound without the constraints of digital radio (coverage, availability of receivers…).
Is the T-1200 difficult to use?
Not at all. Despite its sophistication, the T-1200 is very intuitive to use thanks to its 20 presets, pulse tuning with confirmation beep, input attenuator, and inter-station muting. It comes with a detailed manual in French.
What are the connection possibilities of the T-1200?
The T-1200 features unbalanced analog outputs on RCA and balanced outputs on XLR, as well as a coaxial digital output. This allows it to be connected to any hi-fi amplifier or preamplifier, as well as to an external D/A converter. The antenna input is via a 75-ohm coaxial connector.
What are the most innovative technologies of the T-1200?
Notable technologies include Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) for the local oscillator, variable bandwidth IF filtering, multipath reduction, and especially DS-DC (Direct Synthesis - Double Cancellation) stereo demodulation. The latter combines digital synthesis of the pilot carrier and elimination of crosstalk between channels, for exceptional left/right separation.
