The Audio-Technica AT-VM740xML/H represents a significant evolution in the world of phono cartridges. This kit combines the VM740xML cartridge with its perfectly matched headshell, offering a ready-to-use solution for demanding vinyl enthusiasts. Equipped with a high-precision Microlinear diamond and substantial technical innovations from the latest VMx generation launched in May 2025, this cartridge delivers detailed sound reproduction with remarkable fidelity to the original recordings.
The VM740xML/H benefits from the VM configuration (dual moving magnets), which faithfully reproduces the 90° geometry of the cutting heads used in vinyl record manufacturing. This technical match is far from trivial: it allows for optimal alignment in the groove and more precise extraction of the musical signal. The two magnets are strategically positioned to correspond exactly to the left and right channels, thus optimizing stereo separation, which reaches 25 dB at 1 kHz.
The internal structure is based on para-toroidal coils with two coils per channel—one behind the other—greatly improving generator efficiency. A central shielding plate separates the left and right channels, reducing interference and preserving the stereo image. The major innovation of this 2025 generation lies in the use of PCUHD copper wire (Pure Copper Ultra High Drawability), replacing the PCOCC of previous versions. This exceptionally pure material, initially developed for Audio-Technica’s high-end cables, makes its debut here in a cartridge coil, delivering more powerful bass and a wider soundstage.
The cartridge body, made of die-cast aluminum with a gold finish, helps reduce unwanted vibrations and resonances. Its higher weight compared to polymer improves the mechanical and vibrational behavior of the assembly, promoting more precise and nuanced playback.
What truly sets the VM740xML apart is its fully nude-mounted Microlinear diamond on a lightweight conical aluminum cantilever. This diamond, with its complex multi-level geometry, offers a much more precise contact surface with the groove than classic elliptical or conical tips. This technical feature allows for the extraction of more sonic information, especially in the high frequencies, while significantly reducing distortion and surface noise.
Beyond sonic performance, this advanced geometry offers a substantial advantage for preserving your collection: it reduces record wear compared to conventional tips. The conical aluminum cantilever, lighter and stiffer than a standard tube, optimizes the transmission of vibrations from the groove to the magnets, enhancing dynamic reproduction and response speed.
This cartridge stands as a slightly more accessible alternative to the VM745xML, which uses the same Microlinear diamond but is mounted on a solid boron cantilever, an even stiffer material. This smart technical compromise allows you to enjoy most of the audiophile qualities of its big sister at a more affordable price.
Users and experts agree on the remarkable acoustic qualities of this cartridge. Its exemplary groove tracking results in a notable reduction in surface noise, allowing for a purer listening experience. The upper end of the sound spectrum is characterized by exceptional definition, rich in detail, without suffering from an artificial emphasis that could cause listening fatigue.
The midrange benefits from a clear, open, and airy reproduction, avoiding the dark coloration sometimes found in other cartridges. As for the bass, true to Audio-Technica tradition, it is perfectly controlled and articulated, providing a solid foundation without overflow. This tonal neutrality, coupled with excellent channel separation, allows you to rediscover recordings with a more pronounced three-dimensional perspective.
The reduction in the number of coil windings, an innovation of the 2025 generation, improves transient response and allows the cartridge to react more quickly to signal variations, ensuring cleaner and more spontaneous musical reproduction.
Audio-Technica has paid particular attention to the practical aspects of this new generation. The addition of threaded inserts in the aluminum cartridge body greatly simplifies installation, requiring only two screws—a particularly appreciated advantage on the integrated arms of high-end turntables.
The integrated flip-down stylus guard now features a clever V-shaped cutout that serves as a visual guide for the stylus position, greatly facilitating placement when lowering onto the record. This attention to practical details demonstrates Audio-Technica’s commitment to making audiophile technology more accessible, even to less experienced users.
The AT-VM740xML/H version offers an additional advantage: it comes pre-mounted on an optimized headshell, eliminating installation difficulties and ensuring perfect alignment between the cartridge and its support. This “plug and play” solution significantly reduces setup time while maximizing acoustic performance.
The AT-VM740xML/H cartridge offers broad compatibility with most quality turntables. Its dynamic compliance of 7 × 10^-6 cm/dyne (100 Hz) makes it particularly suitable for medium to high-mass tonearms. Its recommended tracking force of 2 grams (acceptable range: 1.8 to 2.2 g) represents a good compromise between detail extraction and record preservation.
On the electronics side, this MM (Moving Magnet) cartridge delivers an output voltage of 3.2 mV (at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec), perfectly suited to the MM phono input of most amplifiers and phono preamps. For optimal results, use a load impedance of 47 kOhms and a capacitance between 150 and 250 pF, which are standard values on most phono preamps on the market.
Its extended frequency response of 20 Hz to 25 kHz allows it to faithfully reproduce the entire audible spectrum and beyond, capturing the subtle harmonics that contribute to realistic reproduction. This cartridge is therefore an ideal link in a quality hi-fi chain, capable of integrating harmoniously into systems of various levels while revealing more detail as the rest of the equipment improves.
The VM740xML is part of Audio-Technica’s rich history in high-end phono cartridges. Considered the worthy successor to the renowned AT-150MLX, it continues a tradition of excellence while incorporating the latest technological advances. This model is part of the 700 series, the premium positioning in the new VMx range launched in May 2025, the first major overhaul since 2016.
This cartridge sits just below the VM745xML, which uses a boron cantilever but shares the same Microlinear diamond. It thus represents excellent value for the discerning audiophile, offering most of the sonic qualities of the higher model without reaching its price.
Note that the replacement stylus AT-VMN40xML is available separately, allowing you to extend the life of your investment without having to replace the entire cartridge when natural wear occurs.
The main difference lies in the cantilever (stylus holder) material: conical aluminum for the VM740xML and solid boron for the VM745xML. Boron, being stiffer and lighter, transmits the groove’s micro-vibrations more efficiently, notably improving transient response and definition. Both cartridges share the same high-quality Microlinear diamond, but the VM745xML offers even more precise reproduction of complex dynamic passages, at a higher price.
No, the Microlinear diamond is specifically designed for modern microgroove records (33 and 45 rpm), whose groove width is much finer than that of 78s. For the latter, Audio-Technica offers specific styli with a larger curvature radius (2.5–3.0 mil versus 0.12 mil for the Microlinear). Using this cartridge on 78s would damage the diamond and could deteriorate your valuable records.
Absolutely. Pre-mounting eliminates the delicate operations of aligning the cartridge on the headshell. You simply attach the assembly to your tonearm, make the connections, then finalize the settings (tracking force, anti-skating). This greatly reduces the risk of errors and ensures optimal geometry between the cartridge and its support, directly contributing to sound performance.

Used for the first time on my vintage Sony PS-X35 turntable (1979) to replace the original Sony cartridge.
I found that balancing the tonearm was a bit tricky because of the weight of the whole Auto-Technica setup… but I managed it… just barely. Thanks for the tips, Nicolas.
I recently purchased a pre-owned Denon DP-30L(S) (1980), and pairing it with the Audio Technica AT-VM740xML/H cartridge is simply wonderful; Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes are back in my den. The sound is balanced, detailed, and almost mesmerizing.
I’m delighted with my choice.
