The Hana MH cartridge, equipped with a nude MicroLine diamond, represents the pinnacle of the Japanese manufacturer’s M series. With its 2 mV output level allowing direct use with MM phono preamps, its Delrin and brass construction, and its unique cryogenic treatment, the MH delivers performance worthy of cartridges sold at several times its price.
The Hana MH stands out for its sophisticated architecture. The Delrin body, a technical polymer developed by DuPont, is a significant upgrade over the ABS plastic used in previous series. This material does not resonate within the audible spectrum and effectively controls unwanted vibrations.
The precisely machined brass base, crafted by a CNC machine, completes this construction. It brings the total weight to 9.5 grams and improves mechanical coupling with the headshell. The integrated brass threaded inserts greatly simplify installation while optimizing vibration transmission.
The choice of a nude diamond with a MicroLine profile reflects Hana’s technical ambition. This full Nude MicroLine diamond, mounted at the tip of an aluminum cantilever, represents the ultimate evolution in stylus design. Its shape, which mimics the cutting chisel and fits more precisely into the vinyl groove, allows for the extraction of remarkably fine details.
The MicroLine profile offers an optimized contact surface with the groove walls, reducing vinyl wear and extending the diamond’s lifespan. The aluminum cantilever ensures faithful transmission of modulations to the electromagnetic generator.
The HANA M Series stands out for its innovative use of cryogenic treatment. This process, known as “cold annealing,” is performed at a temperature close to absolute zero. This technique alters the molecular structure of metals at the most fundamental level.
Cryogenic treatment is a cold annealing process at a temperature near absolute zero that restructures metals at the molecular level, which is particularly important in the Alnico-based magnetic electromotive circuit. The result is a measurable improvement in signal linearity and a reduction in distortion.
At the heart of the MH is a generator using Alnico magnets. The coils are wound with ultra-high purity copper wire (>4N), ensuring optimal signal transmission.
With an internal impedance of 130 ohms and an output level of 2 mV, the MH is perfectly suited for standard 47 kΩ MM inputs. Channel separation of 30 dB and channel balance below 1 dB attest to the precision of its manufacturing.
Listening sessions reveal a cartridge of exemplary neutrality. What really struck me after listening to the Hana MH for a good while is that I never wished for more or less of anything. Tonally, it’s the most perfect cartridge I’ve ever heard.
The frequency response extends from 12 Hz to 45 kHz. This exceptional bandwidth results in a natural rendering of timbres. High frequencies retain their finesse without harshness, even in complex passages. This is a very high-quality cartridge and offers excellent value for money given its high level of performance. It simply disappears and lets the music flow.
Both cartridges share the same construction and the same MicroLine diamond. The only difference lies in the number of coil windings: the ML (Low) has fewer windings for an output level of 0.4 mV, while the MH (High) has more to reach 2 mV. This difference slightly affects the moving mass, with the ML being theoretically more agile, but the MH remains compatible with standard MM preamps.
Cryogenic treatment involves exposing metal components to temperatures close to absolute zero (-273°C). This process reorganizes the crystalline structure of metals, eliminating internal stresses and creating a more homogeneous structure. For a phono cartridge, this results in a more stable and controlled magnetic flux, reducing distortion and improving overall musicality.
With its 2 mV output and 130-ohm impedance, the MH is designed to work with any standard MM phono preamplifier offering a 47 kΩ load. No specialized MC stage is required. A gain of 40 to 46 dB will be optimal for most systems.
The M series represents the top of the Hana range, above the E and S series. Compared to the SH (Shibata High), the MH offers a more sophisticated diamond, superior Delrin/brass construction, and cryogenic treatment. These improvements result in increased resolution, superior dynamics, and exemplary tonal neutrality.
