The Davis Acoustics Dhavani MK2 embody the philosophy of the French manufacturer’s DMAX range: 3-way floorstanders designed to deliver particularly high efficiency, capable of filling large spaces effortlessly. With their imposing 21 cm woofer and compression tweeter with horn, these speakers are intended both for ambitious hi-fi setups and the most comprehensive home theater installations.
The Dhavani MK2 stands out first through its three carefully selected transducers. Bass is handled by a large 21 cm woofer with a cellulose pulp cone. This traditional material, favored for its natural qualities, offers an ideal balance between rigidity and internal damping. With a powerful motor, this driver dives into low frequencies with such authority that a separate subwoofer is unnecessary in most setups.
The midrange uses a 17 cm driver with a fiberglass cone. This technical choice gives the transducer remarkable speed and a wide, open sound. Lighter and stiffer than conventional materials, fiberglass enables precise reproduction of voices and instruments in the crucial band where most of the musical message resides.
The treble range is one of the speaker’s highlights. The compression tweeter with horn is a sophisticated technical solution inherited from the professional world. Unlike classic dome tweeters that radiate directly into the air, a compression system concentrates acoustic energy in a chamber before projecting it through a horn. This configuration multiplies the driver’s efficiency and enables the speaker’s exceptional 94 dB sensitivity. The horn ensures controlled dispersion in the room and a dynamic projection particularly appreciated in home theater.
The bass-reflex loading uses a front-firing circular port, a practical solution that allows placement close to the rear wall without compromising the loading system’s operation. The generous internal volume and port sizing deliver an extended frequency response from 30 Hz to 20 kHz, thus covering the entire audible spectrum with remarkable low-end authority.
The Dhavani MK2 perfectly illustrates Davis Acoustics’ ability to design truly versatile speakers. While the manufacturer positions it within the DMAX range dedicated to home theater, many users adopt it for pure stereo hi-fi use. This versatility is explained by several technical factors.
The 94 dB sensitivity is a major asset in both contexts. In hi-fi, it allows the use of modest-power amplifiers, including tube models with just a few dozen watts. This high sensitivity preserves dynamics and the ability to reproduce both the subtlest level changes and the most spectacular crescendos. In home theater, it simplifies integration with other speakers in the DMAX range, notably the Stentaure C MK2 center channel which uses the same transducers to ensure perfectly consistent voicing.
Power handling, rated at 120 watts nominal and 200 watts peak, enables substantial sound pressure levels without audible distortion. This robustness lets you reproduce the special effects of an action movie as convincingly as the nuances of an intimate jazz recording. The deep, articulate bass from the 21 cm woofer gives solid foundation to cinematic soundtracks while naturally conveying the texture of acoustic double basses or church organs.
Crossover points at 400 Hz and 4 kHz reflect a carefully considered division of the spectrum. The transition between bass and midrange at 400 Hz prevents the 21 cm woofer from reproducing frequencies where its size would become a handicap. Likewise, the mid-to-high handoff at 4 kHz allows the 17 cm driver to cover most of the vocal band before passing the baton to the compression tweeter for the upper harmonics.
With dimensions of 250 x 1080 x 340 mm and a unit weight of 23 kg, the Dhavani MK2 has a commanding physical presence in the listening space. This generous stature is more than aesthetic: it directly contributes to acoustic performance by providing substantial enclosure volume and minimizing parasitic vibrations thanks to the cabinet’s considerable mass.
The black ash finish adopts a sober look that eases integration into various interiors. While some may regret the absence of warmer natural wood finishes, this monochrome choice aligns with contemporary aesthetics and pairs particularly well with modern home theater equipment.
The nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms, with a minimum of 5 ohms, ensures compatibility with most amplifiers on the market. Combined with the high sensitivity, this makes the speaker undemanding in terms of power supply. Nevertheless, a quality amplifier capable of delivering stable current will allow these floorstanders to realize their full dynamic potential.
Davis Acoustics recommends these speakers for listening areas between 15 and 35 m², but experience shows they can suit slightly larger spaces, up to 50 m² according to some dealers. The front port simplifies placement by allowing relatively close installation to the rear wall, unlike rear-ported designs that require greater clearance.
With extension down to 30 Hz and a powerfully driven 21 cm woofer, these floorstanders indeed provide bass that’s deep and structured enough for most musical and cinematic content. A subwoofer remains relevant for the most extreme LFE effects in modern cinema or for electronic music enthusiasts seeking physical infrabass.
Davis Acoustics has made several improvements to the MK2, notably in the crossover and transducer optimization. The compression tweeter benefits from refinements derived from research conducted on the upper range, while the overall integration of the three ways has been fine-tuned for greater coherence.
Thanks to the 94 dB sensitivity, a 30 to 50 watt amplifier is sufficient for comfortable listening. However, to fully exploit their dynamics and power handling, a 70 to 100 watt model is an optimal choice. Quality trumps quantity: prioritize a well-built, musical amplifier over poorly controlled brute power.
Unlike some professional compression drivers that can sound aggressive, the Dhavani MK2 tweeter has been optimized for home use. The horn ensures controlled dispersion that avoids directivity peaks, while the carefully designed crossover preserves tonal smoothness. Many users highlight these speakers’ ability to allow long listening sessions without fatigue.
Versatility is one of the Dhavani MK2’s major strengths. The deep bass suits symphonic classical music as well as electronic, the open midrange flatters voices and acoustic instruments, while the dynamic treble provides the precision required for complex recordings. Users often cite blues and jazz as particular favorites.
