Fyne Audio SC1

Overview

A super tweeter only reaches its full potential when it’s connected with a cable that matches its performance. That’s precisely the role of the SC1, a cable developed by Dr. Paul Mills in Fyne Audio’s workshops in Glasgow. Conceived as the natural extension of the SuperTrax system, this 1.5-metre cable incorporates the in-house technologies of the Scottish brand: high-purity OFC copper conductors, deep cryogenic treatment, and a dedicated ground cable.

A design driven by high frequencies

The SC1 is not a conventional speaker cable. Its geometry has been specifically optimised to meet the demands of the SuperTrax, whose bandwidth extends up to 60 kHz. The conductors use a ribbon structure rather than traditional twisted strands. This configuration reduces eddy currents that can impair the transmission of ultra-high-frequency signals and degrade transient behaviour.

The spacing between the conductors uses an LPDE (low-density polyethylene) dielectric, which maintains particularly low capacitance. This characteristic preserves signal integrity at high frequencies where capacitive losses become significant. The dielectric also helps damp micro-mechanical vibrations along the cable.

Cryogenic treatment in the Glasgow facilities

Fyne Audio applies its DCT (Deep Cryogenic Treatment) process to the SC1, a method usually reserved for the crossover networks of its high-end loudspeakers. The cable is gradually cooled down to around -150°C, kept at this temperature for several days, then slowly brought back to room temperature. This controlled thermal cycle alters the microstructure of the copper by reducing internal stress and refining the junctions between metal crystals.

The treatment is also applied to the solder joints that connect the conductors to the connectors. These transition areas, often a source of electrical discontinuities, thus benefit from a more homogeneous crystalline structure.

A ground cable to reduce RF interference

Due to its omnidirectional design and its position on top of the speakers, the SuperTrax can pick up radio-frequency interference present in the listening environment. The SC1 incorporates a separate ground conductor, intended to be connected to the amplifier chassis or another grounding point in the system. This active shielding drains off electromagnetic disturbances before they can colour the musical signal.

This approach differs from simple passive shielding: the ground cable creates a low-impedance path to earth, which is particularly effective against high-frequency radiation from nearby electronic equipment (Wi‑Fi routers, phones, light dimmers).

Refined construction and terminations

A braided nylon sleeve protects all the conductors from mechanical stress and abrasion. The SC1 comes with gold-plated connectors, available as spades and banana plugs, allowing direct connection to the binding posts of the speakers or the super tweeter. The complete kit includes a pair of 1.5-metre cables presented in a case.

This length corresponds to the typical positioning of the SuperTrax, installed on top of the speakers and connected to the high-frequency terminals. The cables supplied as standard with the SuperTrax allow for initial setup, but the SC1 brings all the refinements developed by Fyne Audio for its premium components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SC1 compatible only with the SuperTrax?

The SC1 was developed specifically for the SuperTrax, but there is nothing technically preventing it from being used with other super tweeters or even as a conventional speaker cable over short distances. Its characteristics (low capacitance, RF shielding) benefit any application where preserving high frequencies is a priority.

What’s the difference compared with the cable supplied with the SuperTrax?

The standard cable included with the SuperTrax enables correct commissioning of the system. The SC1 stands out through its full cryogenic treatment, its higher-grade OFC copper conductors, and its additional ground cable. These improvements aim to reduce background noise and refine transient reproduction.

How do I connect the ground cable?

The SC1’s ground cable should ideally be connected to a grounding point on the amplifier (chassis screw, ground terminal if available). It can also be connected to the ground posts of the speakers on models that provide them. The key is to establish a connection to the reference potential of the audio system.
