Sony PS-LX3BT
Overview
Seven years after the PS-LX310BT, Sony is renewing its line-up with the PS-LX3BT, a fully automatic turntable designed for wireless use. The concept remains the same: press a button, place the record, listen. But the Bluetooth transmission now supports aptX Adaptive, enabling high-resolution streaming (96 kHz/24-bit) to compatible speakers or headphones. The built-in phono preamp and hardwired RCA cable also allow for a classic wired connection to any amplifier with a line input.
Fully automatic belt-drive system
The PS-LX3BT operates on a “one button playback” principle. Pressing the Start button starts the platter spinning, automatically positions the tonearm at the beginning of the groove, and begins playback. At the end of the side, the arm returns to its resting position and the motor stops. Two speeds are available (33 ⅓ and 45 rpm), selectable via a button on the top of the turntable. An adapter for 7-inch singles with a large center hole is stored in a compartment under the chassis.
The belt-drive mechanism favors quiet operation over absolute speed accuracy, a common compromise in this price range. The die-cast aluminum platter provides enough inertia to maintain stable rotation and limit wow and flutter.
Bluetooth aptX Adaptive and wired connectivity
Wireless transmission is the key selling point of the PS-LX3BT. The built-in Bluetooth module supports aptX and aptX Adaptive codecs, the latter allowing streaming up to 96 kHz/24-bit to compatible devices. Pairing is done via a dedicated button: a long press activates discovery mode, a short press switches to the last paired device.
For wired setups, the audio output can be switched between phono and line modes using a toggle located on the rear. In “line” position, the internal preamplifier amplifies and equalizes the signal; in “phono” position, it is bypassed so that an external phono preamp can take over. A three-position gain selector (Low, Mid, High) lets you adjust the output level according to the characteristics of the connected amplifier. The RCA cable is permanently attached to the chassis, a design that simplifies installation but prevents any future replacement.
Pre-calibrated MM cartridge with no upgrade options
The turntable comes with a pre-installed moving magnet (MM) cartridge, most likely an Audio-Technica AT3600L or an equivalent model rebadged by Sony. The tracking force is factory-set at 3.5 g (± 0.5 g), a relatively high value that favors tracking stability at the expense of long-term groove preservation. The straight aluminum tonearm (pipe arm design) offers no adjustments: no adjustable counterweight, no anti-skating. The whole assembly is calibrated once and for all and cannot be modified.
This “plug and play” approach eliminates setup errors but rules out upgrades. Replacing the cartridge with a third-party model would require recalibration, which is impossible on this arm. Only the stylus can be changed, provided you stick with the same type of tip.
Clean design and anti-vibration chassis
The PS-LX3BT chassis retains the sleek lines of its predecessor. The matte black finish, aluminum-grey platter, and transparent polycarbonate dust cover form a discreet package that fits easily into a living room or office. The dimensions (430 × 118 × 367 mm) remain compact, and the 5.8 kg weight indicates a sufficiently rigid structure to dampen unwanted vibrations.
The dust cover serves a dual purpose: protecting the platter and cartridge when the turntable is not in use, and helping to reduce acoustic resonances when speakers are placed nearby. It can be removed if you prefer the look of a “naked” turntable. The controls (start, stop, speed, Bluetooth pairing) are grouped on the top panel, with low-profile buttons that do not disrupt the overall design.
Positioning versus the PS-LX310BT and PS-LX5BT
The PS-LX3BT succeeds the PS-LX310BT, retaining the same automatic operation and Bluetooth connectivity, but with an updated wireless module. The PS-LX310BT, available since 2019, was limited to standard SBC Bluetooth; the newcomer adds aptX Adaptive support, a significant improvement in wireless audio quality.
Within the current range, the PS-LX5BT sits one step above. It shares the same mechanical base and Bluetooth features, but benefits from a few refinements: a more rigid one-piece body, a thicker rubber mat, gold-plated RCA connectors with a detachable cable, and an MM cartridge with lighter tracking force (2.0 g versus 3.5 g). These differences aim to reduce unwanted vibrations and improve sound definition, without radically changing the overall performance level.
What the press says
The Sony PS-LX3BT isn’t the most alluring turntable in the world by any stretch of the imagination.[...] In truth, we find the PS-LX3BT simple and unfussy in its set up and operation.[...] We’re taken with just how composed, controlled and well-organised the Sony sounds, marvelling at the effortless cohesion and solidity it brings to the entirety of Michael Jackson’s Bad album.[...] Okay, there were always going to be limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the cartridge be replaced with a model from another brand?
No. The tonearm has no tracking force or anti-skating adjustment. Sony indicates that only the stylus is meant to be replaced, via its after-sales service. Installing a third-party cartridge would require recalibration, which is not possible on this turntable.
Does the Bluetooth work with all wireless headphones and speakers?
The turntable transmits over Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and aptX Adaptive support. Devices that only support SBC or AAC will receive the signal in those codecs, with slightly lower quality. aptX Adaptive transmission (96 kHz/24-bit) requires a Qualcomm-compatible receiver.
Can the PS-LX3BT be used without Bluetooth, only via cable?
Yes. The phono/line switch on the rear lets you connect the turntable directly to a hi-fi amplifier (in phono mode if it has a dedicated phono input, or in line mode otherwise). The RCA cable is permanently integrated.
Does the turntable have a USB output for digitizing records?
According to the specifications provided by Sony, the PS-LX3BT does not feature a USB output, unlike the older PS-LX310BT which did. Digitization will therefore require an external audio interface connected to the line output.
How does the automatic record size detection work?
A selector on the top of the turntable lets you choose between 7-inch (singles) and 12-inch (LP) formats. The tonearm then automatically positions itself at the correct point in the groove according to this setting.
