Overview
Close to 19 kg on the scale, eight Toshiba transistors, a 400 VA toroidal transformer, and an out-of-the-ordinary filtering capacity: the AD-86D is one of those Chinese amplifiers that shake up the usual hi-fi price benchmarks. Tonewinner, a manufacturer based in Guangzhou, has been designing its own products since 1992 and supplies several Western brands as an OEM. The AD-86D crystallizes this expertise in a compact yet dense format, with an unusually generous set of connections for a mid-range integrated amplifier.
A power supply built for performance
The heart of the AD-86D is a 400 VA toroidal transformer combined with six filtering capacitors totaling 57,400 µF. This current reserve allows the amp to deliver 2 × 120 W RMS into 8 ohms (or 2 × 240 W into 4 ohms) without running out of steam on transients. Tonewinner claims class A amplification; some European retailers instead mention an A/B topology. Reality is likely somewhere in between: class A operation up to a certain power threshold, then a gradual shift to A/B mode beyond that point.
The output stage relies on eight Toshiba TTC-5200 and TTA1943 bipolar transistors (four per channel), known for their low noise and strong current handling. The preamp uses Texas Instruments OP1678 operational amplifiers and an NJW1194 volume controller from JRC. The latter offers 0.5 dB adjustment steps, allowing precise control without the abrupt jumps sometimes encountered with low-end potentiometers.
Built-in DAC and file playback
The AD-86D incorporates an Analog Devices AD1955 DAC capable of handling PCM streams up to 24-bit / 192 kHz and DSD up to DSD128. This converter, launched in the early 2000s, is no longer cutting-edge but still has a sound signature appreciated for its musicality. The stated signal-to-noise ratio (120 dB) remains respectable.
Direct audio file playback is available via a USB-A port or a microSD card reader, with support for FLAC, APE, WAV, MP3, and WMA formats. The USB DAC port (micro-USB) allows connection to a Windows or Mac computer, but its 48 kHz limitation curbs its appeal for high-resolution files.
Generous connectivity and flexible use
The HDMI ARC input simplifies connection to a television: the amp retrieves the audio signal directly without extra cabling. The dual subwoofer output allows one or two subwoofers to be connected in parallel.
One detail deserves attention: U-shaped jumpers connect the pre-out outputs to the Direct In inputs. Removing them turns the AD-86D into a pure power amplifier, controllable by an external preamp. This modularity will appeal to those who want to upgrade their system over time.
Bluetooth and mobile app
The built-in Bluetooth receiver (SBC and AAC codecs) lets you stream music from a smartphone or tablet within a range of 10 to 15 meters. The Tonewinner app, available on iOS and Android, offers source selection, volume control, management of files on USB drives or SD cards, and bass/treble adjustment. The issue: the interface is entirely in Chinese, which makes it hard to use without a good dose of patience or a few translated screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the AD-86D drive speakers that are hard to power?
Its 2 × 120 W into 8 ohms (2 × 240 W into 4 ohms) and its 57,400 µF filtering capacity give it a substantial current reserve. It can drive most floorstanding and bookshelf speakers on the market, including models known to be demanding in terms of amplification.
Can it be used only as a power amplifier?
Yes. By removing the U-shaped jumpers located between the pre-out outputs and the Direct In input, the AD-86D bypasses its internal preamp. A preamp or a DAC with variable outputs can then control it directly.
Does the built-in DAC rival a recent external DAC?
Analog Devices’ AD1955 dates back to the early 2000s. Its musicality is still appreciated, but a modern-generation external DAC will generally offer more resolution and transparency. The AD-86D precisely allows you to bypass its DAC via the RCA analog inputs.
Is the subwoofer output filtered?
The two subwoofer outputs deliver the full-range signal. Low-pass filtering is handled by the subwoofer itself, according to its own crossover frequency settings.
