Tonewinner AD-99D: the integrated amp that combines power and connectivity
Third generation of the AD-99 series after two models that sold for over a decade, the AD-99D uses Tonewinner’s patented “Super Class A” circuit, already found in the AD-86D and AD-66D models. This 24 kg stereo integrated amp delivers 2 × 180 W into 8 Ω and includes a DAC, a Bluetooth receiver, a file player, and an HDMI ARC input: a concentrate of features in an imposing format.
A power supply sized for dynamics
The 550 VA toroidal transformer takes a central place in the chassis. It powers eight filtering capacitors totaling 69,400 μF, a current reserve that allows the amplifier to respond without faltering to sudden power demands. Transients, those quick note attacks that bring music to life, are reproduced with clarity. Dense orchestral passages or deep bass lines do not cause sagging: the power supply delivers what the power stage needs.
This power supply section is physically separated from the other circuits. The chassis is partitioned into five distinct zones (power supply, inputs, energy storage, left channel, right channel) by metal plates that reduce electromagnetic interference between modules.
The power stage: Toshiba transistors and symmetrical operation
Each channel uses two pairs of Toshiba TTC5200 and TTA1943 transistors, mounted directly against the large side heatsinks. These precisely matched transistors ensure constant linearity across the entire bandwidth (10 Hz to 90 kHz). The input stage uses Texas Instruments OPA1678 operational amplifiers, known for their low noise. Volume control is handled by the NJW1194 chip, the same as in Tonewinner’s AD-3 flagship.
The “Super Class A” circuit combines the qualities of Class A (smoothness, detail) with the efficiency of Class AB. Harmonic distortion remains below 0.01%, the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 100 dB, and channel separation reaches 80 dB. In practice, this means a silent background and a well-defined stereo image.
Despite the available power and the size of the heatsinks, heat generation remains moderate in normal use. The unit does not require forced ventilation.
The built-in DAC: Analog Devices AD1955
The digital-to-analog conversion section is based on the Analog Devices AD1955 chip, capable of handling files up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. It receives signals from the digital inputs (three coaxial, one optical, HDMI ARC, USB DAC) and from the built-in file player. The latter accepts USB sticks and microSD cards up to 128 GB, with support for FLAC, WAV, APE, MP3, and WMA formats.
The USB-B port allows the AD-99D to be connected to a Mac or Windows computer for use as an external DAC. The signal then goes directly to the amplification section without passing through the computer’s sound card.
HDMI ARC and simplified TV integration
The HDMI ARC input retrieves the TV’s audio signal via a single cable. Content played by the TV’s streaming apps, terrestrial broadcasts, or sources connected to the TV can be amplified without adding extra audio cables. Volume can be controlled by the TV remote on some CEC-compatible models.
Bluetooth SBC and AAC: wireless listening from mobile devices
The Bluetooth receiver supports SBC and AAC codecs with a stated range of 10 to 15 meters. Pairing from a smartphone or tablet is done in the usual way. Quality depends on the source and the codec used; aptX and LDAC codecs are not supported.
Tone controls and subwoofer outputs
The AD-99D offers separate bass and treble adjustment, accessible via the front-panel controls, the remote control, or the Tonewinner mobile app (iOS and Android). Two subwoofer outputs allow the system to be complemented with one or two subwoofers for a 2.1 or 2.2 configuration. Low-pass filtering of the subwoofer signal is handled by the amplifier.
Use as a preamp or as a power amp only
The Pre-Out output and Amp In (Direct In) input are linked by default with a metal jumper. By removing this jumper, the two sections become independent. The AD-99D can then be used solely as a preamp (to drive monoblocks or an external power amp) or solely as a power amp (driven by a separate preamp or a home theater processor).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the AD-99D be connected to a turntable?
Yes, via one of the three stereo RCA inputs. However, the AD-99D does not have a built-in phono preamp. A turntable with an internal phono preamp or an external phono preamp is required for MM or MC cartridges.
What audio formats can the USB player read?
The player supports FLAC, WAV, and APE files up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, as well as compressed MP3 and WMA formats. DSD files are not supported.
Can the Pre-Out output drive a subwoofer?
No, the Pre-Out output delivers the full, unfiltered stereo signal. For a subwoofer, you must use the two dedicated subwoofer outputs, which apply a low-pass filter to the signal.
Can the AD-99D be used with a home theater processor?
Yes. By removing the jumper between Pre-Out and Amp In, the Direct In (Amp In) input allows connection of an AV processor’s outputs. The AD-99D then operates as a stereo power amp for the left and right channels of a multichannel system.
